Hassel Trent
Hassel Morris Trent, 81, of Gilbert, W.Va., died Friday, Dec. 16, 2011, at his home.
He was born Jan. 15, 1930, the son of the late Jesse and Narcie Brown Trent.
He was a retired coal mine foreman, formerly employed by Arch Coal Company. He was a member of United Mine Workers of America-Local 6196 of Keystone, Iaeger Masonic Lodge #148, Thirty-Two-Degree Scottish Rite of Free Masonry Valley of Charleston, and Beni Kedem Shriners of Charleston. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Korean War, and was of the Baptist faith.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Helen Pauline Charles Trent; two brothers, Donald Ralph Trent and Willis Trent; and one sister, Allma Jean Justice.
He is survived by three sons, Eddie Mack Trent and Jeffrey M. Trent, both of Gilbert, Brian D.J. Trent of Wharncliffe, W.Va.; one brother, Jimmy R. Trent of Kopperston, W.Va.; two sisters, Doris Ann Trent Hatfield of Baisden, W.Va., and Bobbie Trent Hughes of Fountain Hills, Ariz.; five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 19, in the Mounts Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Diamond Carter officiating. Burial followed in the Hatfield Cemetery, Sharon Heights, Hampden, W.Va. Arrangements were under direction of Mounts Funeral Home of Gilbert.
James Vipperman
James R. Vipperman, 64, of Shelby Gap, died Saturday, Dec. 17, 2011, at his home.
He was born in Pike County, July 7, 1947, the son of Pluma Justice Vipperman and the late Glen Vipperman.
He was a coal miner/operator.
Besides his mother, he is survived by his wife, Brenda Belcher Vipperman; two sons, James Robert Vipperman Jr. of Ocala, Fla., and Ronald Vipperman of Jenkins; one daughter, Christy Lyn Damron of Shelby Gap; one brother, Glenn Wallace Vipperman of Raccoon; three sisters, Glennis Hatfield of Phelps and Margaret Ann Coleman and Dorothy Hunt, both of Kimper; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20, in the Dorton Freewill Baptist Church with Freewill Baptist ministers officiating. Burial followed in the Roy Belcher Cemetery, Dorton. Arrangements were under direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.
Steven Whitt
Steven Lee Whitt, 43, of Newtown, W.Va., died Thursday, Dec. 15, 2011.
He was born in Williamson, W.Va., June 19, 1968, the son of the late Lilburn Jr. and Thelma Ann Hatfield Whitt.
He was a security guard.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Leroy Whitt.
He is survived by his wife, from whom he was separated, Sabrina Hatfield Whitt; three brothers, Martin Robert Whitt, Roby Allen Whitt and Paul Thomas Whitt; four sisters, Dinah Sue Bowens, Kathy Lynn Noe, Patricia Taylor and Teresa Lynn Dean; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21, in the Chafin Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Randy Casey officiating. Burial will follow n the Mitchell Cemetery, Straight Fork, Newtown. Arrangements are under direction of Chafins Funeral Home of Delbarton, W.Va.
Visitation is on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until time for the funeral service.
Zella Wright
Zella Wright, 94, of Robinson Creek, died Monday, Dec. 19, 2011, at the Signature Healthcare Center, Pikeville.

Ethel Caudill
Ethel Marie Caudill, 76, of Ashcamp, died Saturday, Dec. 10, 2011, at her home.
She was born in Letcher County, June 11, 1935, the daughter of the late Beckham and Dixie Caudill Fields.
She was a homemaker.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Maynard Caudill.
She is survived by three sons, Jackie Caudill and David Caudill, both of Ashcamp and Ronald Caudill of Virgie; one daughter, Debra Potter of Dorton; two brothers, Beckham Fields Jr. of Lexington and John Fields of Somerset; eight sisters, Florence Fields of Blackey, Hetty Caudill of Paris, Cloris Whitaker of Frankfort, Clarice Holland of Lexington, Polly Ballard of Winchester, Mary Bailey of Nicholasville, Linda Ball and Connie Boggs, both of Letcher County; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 14, in the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel with Merle Caudill and Jim Fields officiating. Burial followed in the Haven of Rest Cemetery, Mayking. Arrangements were under direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.
Linda Collins
Linda Collins, 70, of Jenkins, died Thursday, Dec. 22, 2011, at the Whitesburg Appalachian Regional Hospital.

Lorraine Collins
Lorraine Morgan Collins, 61, of High Point, N.C., died Monday, Dec. 19, 2011, at Duke University Medical Center.
She was born in Big Branch, W.Va., May 18, 1950, the daughter of Mavis West Morgan of Thomasville, N.C., and the late Cecil Morgan.
She was a retired nurse and of the Baptist faith.
Besides her father, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Amy Collins.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, James Collins; one daughter, Lisa Hatfield of High Point; and two sisters, Loretta Morgan and Marlene Daniels, both of Thomasville.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 23, in the West Morgan Cemetery, Long Branch of Simon, W.Va., with the Rev. Gary Browning officiating. Arrangements are under direction of Mounts Funeral Home of Gilbert, W.Va.
John Darbyshire
John Kenneth Darbyshire, 76, of Belfry, died Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2011, at his home.
He was born in Hardy, Jan. 14, 1935, the son of the late Harold and Lennie Inis Scott Darbyshire.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Donnie Darbyshire.
He was a retired car salesman from Logan Motor Sales; a U.S. Army veteran, serving nine years, and serving during the Korean Conflict; and was a member of the Belfry First Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Connie Varney Darbyshire; four children, Marina Faith Darbyshire Beckett of Belfry, Johnny Darbyshire, Carol Balch and Robin Darbyshire, all of Temple, Texas; one brother James Darbyshire of Sevierville, Tenn.; two sisters, Charlotte Helenburg of La Porte, Texas, and Kathryn Bryant of Sevierville; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 24, in the Hatfield Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Mark Helton officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Memory Gardens, Huddy. Arrangements are under direction of Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler.
Visitation is from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday.
Burns Damron
Burns Damron, 70, of Martin, died Monday, Dec. 19, 2011, at King’s Daughters Medical Center, Ashland.
He was born in Floyd County, June 17, 1941, the son of the late Earmon and Liza Click Damron.
He was a security guard at Big Sandy Community & Technical College, Prestonsburg.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Bobby Luke Damron; and one sister, Gloria Faye Jarvis.
He is survived by one son, Tony Damron of Indiana; two daughters, Angie Damron and Rita Damron, both of Indiana; two brothers, David Damron of Prestonsburg and James Damron of Banner; two sisters, Myrtle Workman of Proctorville, Ohio, and Janet Damron of Martin; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 23, in the Nelson Frazier Funeral Home Chapel with Donnie Hall and Bud Crum officiating. Burial will follow in the Stratton Cemetery, Ivel. Arrangements are under direction of Nelson Frazier Funeral Home of Martin.
Anna Dawhare
Anna Faye Goodman Dawhare, 76, of Douglas Drive, Pikeville, died Sunday, Dec. 18, 2011, at St. Joseph Healthcare.
She was born in Pikeville, Nov. 17, 1935, the daughter of the late Birch Goodman and Vadney Branham Goodman.
She was retired from Pikeville Medical Center and was a hostess at the Landmark Inn. She was of the Old Regular Baptist faith.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Dawhare Sr.; one brother, McKinely Goodman; and one sister, Lillie Dale Goodman.
She is survived by two sons, Frank Dawhare III of Pikeville and Greg Dawhare of Cohoes, N.Y.; one daughter, Vicki Dawhare Cunningham of Lexington; two brothers, Claude Goodman of Pennsylvania and Alfed Goodman of Robinson Creek; five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at noon Thursday, Dec. 22, in the Little Creek Old Regular Baptist Church with Teddy Honaker, Carson Wright and others officiating. Burial followed in Johnson Memorial Park, Pikeville. Arrangements were under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
Visitation was in the funeral home chapel after 6 p.m. Wednesday with special services at 7 p.m.
Tannie Hamilton
Tannie Hamilton, 57, of Harold, died Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2011, at her home.
She was born in Pike County, Jan. 6, 1954, the daughter of the late George and Liza Jane Tackett Gillespie.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ, Harold.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Melvin Gillespie; and one sister, Maudie Jane Gillespie.
She is survived by one son, Curtis Gillespie of Harold; seven brothers and sisters, George Gillespie Jr., Jackie Gillespie, Freel Gillespie, Josephine Hall, Marie Hall and Polly Music, all of Grethel, Zella Howell of McDowell; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 24, in the Pilgrims Home Old Regular Baptist Church, Grethel, with Red Lawson and Johnny Pugh officiating. Burial will follow in Davidson Memorial Gardens, Ivel. Arrangements are under direction of Nelson Frazier Funeral Home of Martin.
Judy Hurley
Judy Ann Hurley, 62, of Elkhorn City, died Sunday, Dec. 11, 2011, at her home.
She was born at Kettlecamp, Dec. 2, 1949, the daughter of the late Finden and Lola Mae Mullins Wallace.
She was a homemaker.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Hurley.
She is survived by one son, Jason Hurley of Elkhorn City; two daughters, Brenda Silcox and Barbara Collins, both of Elkhorn City; one brother, Jerry Wallace of Elkhorn City; one sister, Kathy Adkins of Rockhouse; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 14, in the Glory Bound Freewill Baptist Church, Ashcamp with Edgar Sanders officiating. Burial followed in the Elkhorn City Cemetery. Arrangements were under direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.
