OLDHAM CO., Ky. - Eddie Ray Taylor, 69, formerly of Madisonville, passed away Aug. 2, 2002. He was a member of V.F.W. Am. Vets, and he was retired from General Motors' Chicago plant after 20 years of service. He graduated with the Class of 1951 at Providence High School and served four years in the U.S. Air Force.
Surviving are a daughter, Phyllis Abel of Velpen, Ind.; a sister, Joyce Gardner of Marion; and a granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hanley and Myrtle Taylor.
Funeral services were held Aug. 5 at Townsend-Jones Funeral Home in Providence with Rev. David Frisby officiating. Burial was in White Oak Cemetery near Providence.
Gerding
CARRSVILLE, Ky. - Hayden Gerding, 63, passed away Aug. 1, 2002 at his home. He worked for 34 years for Crounse Corp., in Paducah. He worked a total of 43 years on the river.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Driver Gerding of Carrsville; a daughter, Deana Jo Gerding of Carrsville; a son, Gregory Dean Gerding of Carrsville; a sister, Carolyn Blanford of Marion; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Carl Gerding, Jr., and Donald Gerding; a grandson; and his parents, Leslie Carl and Mary Wiggins Gerding.
Funeral services were held Aug. 3 at Boyd Funeral Home with Bro. James Driver officiating. Burial was in Carrsville Cemetery.
Croft
BURNA, Ky. - John Lowery Croft, 93, passed away July 29, 2002 at his home. He was owner and manager of the former Lola Telephone Exchange. He was retired from the Gulf service station in 1972 and was an elder of Hopewell Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife, Casadeen Suits Croft of Burna; a daughter, Doris Dean Belt of Burna; a son, Lowery Dwayne Croft of Marion; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and four sisters. His parents were John A. Logan Croft and Mary Louella Belt Croft.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., Aug. 1 at Boyd Funeral Home with Bro. Bill Allcock officiating. Burial will be in Salem Cemetery.
Hurley
Kenneth W. Hurley, 55, of Marion, passed away July 29, 2002 at his home. He was a duel member and past master of Salem Masonic Lodge No. 81 and Dycusburg Masonic Lodge No. 232. He was also a member of Marion Chapter 135 Order of the Eastern Star. He worked 17 years at the Earl C. Clements Job Corps in Morganfield, retiring in 1993.
Surviving are his wife, Vilaine Hamby Hurley of Salem; a daughter, Kim Ringstaff of Salem; a son, Kevin Hurley of Marion; a stepson, Brad Tinsley of Marion; a brother, Billy Hurley of Lexington; four grandchildren; and two nieces.
His parents were Troy Allen Hurley and Leona Hughes Hurley.
Funeral services were held July 30 at Boyd Funeral Home with Bro. Frank McCallum officiating. Burial was in Carrsville Cemetery.
King
SALEM, Ky. - Funeral services for William Robert "Buddy" King, 63, were held July 29, 2002 at Boyd Funeral Home with Bro. Chris McDonald and Rev. John East officiating. Burial was in Salem Cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Mildred Martin King of Salem; four sons, William Gregory King, Christopher Martin King and Robert Allen King, all of Salem, and Tony Wayne King of Marion; a sister, Shirley Jackson of Sweet Water, Tenn.; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and six nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert E. King and Ruth Guill King; his grandparents, Ernest and Jenny Guill; and two sisters, Frankie Nell King and Robbie Cooper.
Baker
PRINCETON, Ky. - Sylvia Baker, 82, passed away July 26, 2002 at her home. She was a member of Chapel Hill Baptist Church.
Surviving are three sons, Morris Baker of Caldwell County, Ronnie Baker of Hartsell, Ala., and James Baker of Crittenden County; a daughter, Brenda Holland of Lyon County; two sisters, Linnie Wring of Hopkinsville and Virginia Brown of Kentucky; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, J.R. Baker; a brother, Clyde Brown; and four infant sisters. Her parents were Marion Lenthe and Mattie Boyd Brown.
Funeral services were held July 28 at Morgan's Funeral Home in Princeton with burial in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Spurlock
CALDWELL COUNTY, Ky. - Funeral services for Ray Spurlock, 90, were held July 26, 2002 at Morgan's Funeral Home in Princeton with Rev. John Benton and Rev. Ronnie Sivells officiating. Burial was in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Spurlock was a retired farmer and member of Southside Baptist Church. He passed away July 24 at Lourdes Hospital.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Cotton Spurlock; two daughters, Betty Sue Dunbar of Caldwell County and Sylvia Thurman of Crittenden County; a sister, Ruby Aldridge of Caldwell County; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter. His parents were Edward Seymore and Cicero Thomas Spurlock.
Fisher
ORLANDO, Fla. - Willa M. Fisher, 92, formerly of Evansville, passed away July 18, 2002 at Ocoee Health Central. She was a retired patient escort.
Surviving are two daughters, Jeanene Carroll and Jo Ann Barnett; two stepdaughters, Linda DeBoe and Shirley Hinchee, both of Marion; two stepsons, John C. Fisher of Paducah and James E. Fisher of Greenville, Ind.; 11 grandchildren; and nine step grandchildren.
Funeral services were held July 23 at Alexander Funeral Home West Chapel in Evansville with Bro. Ken Cummins officiating. Burial was in Mapleview Cemetery.
Dyer
HIGHLAND, Ind. - Former Marion resident Robert G. "Bob" Dyer passed away July 17, 2002 at his home.
Dyer grew up in Marion, graduated from Marion High School where he was a starting half back in the late 1930s and early 1940s. He was a former fire chief for the Marion Fire Department. His life's work was as a heavy equipment operator in the construction industry.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Carolyn Cook Dyer; three daughters, Donna Hofman, Kitty Dyer and Mary Ann Skvara; a son, Rick Dyer; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren, all of the Chicago area; a brother, Bill Dyer of Marion; and a sister, Margaret Weldon of Marion.
Funeral services were held in Whiting, Ind.
Murray
ATHENS, Ala. - James Luther Murray, 55, formerly of Marion, passed away July 19, 2002. Funeral services were held July 23 at Gilbert Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Phillips officiating. Burial was in Crowell Cemetery.
Surviving are three sons, Scott Murray of Logansport and Jason Murray and Rob Murray, both of Peru, Ind.; a brother, David Murray of Peck, Mich.; his grandmother, Ester Murray of Harrisburg, Ill.; three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Broshears
Alma Reta Broshears, 89, of Marion, passed away July 22, 2002 at Western Baptist Hospital in Paducah. She was a member of Repton Baptist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star. She earned her nursing degree from Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing. She was a retired registered nurse.
Surviving are a niece, Helen Hunt of Marion; and other nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Broshears; and a daughter, Sharon. Her parents were Arthur and Mary H. Nunn.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., July 25 at Gilbert Funeral Home with Rev. Tommy Brown officiating. Burial will be in Mapleview Cemetery.
