BRADENTON, Fla. - John W. Nation, 75, formerly of Tolu, passed away April 26, 2002 at his home. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church of Bradenton. He was retired from Fiberfill Corp., of Evansville and moved to Bradenton in 1986. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
He is survived by his wife, Anna Nation; a sister, Clara Mae Brinkley of Madisonville; a brother, Harry Dean Nation of Marion; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Louise Belt; a brother, Harold Lloyd Nation; and his parents, William Earl and Della Mae Nation.
A memorial service was held May 6 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Bradenton.

Smiley
MADISONVILLE, Ky. - Mildred Lucretia Smiley, 83, passed away May 6, 2002 at the Paragon in Madisonville.
A Livingston County native, Smiley was a charter member of Parkview Methodist Church in Madisonville.
She is survived by a daughter, Sandra Smith of Madisonville; two sons, Charles E. Smiley of Madisonville and John Smiley of Mesquite, Texas; a sister, Ella Marie Davenport of Burna; several grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Charles A. Smiley; three sisters, Blonnie Rice, Truie Coleman and Annie Boyd; two brothers, Benjamin Overfield and Thomas Franklin Overfield. Her parents were James Edward and Dessie Mae Denton Overfield.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., May 10 at Barnett-Strother Funeral Home with Rev. James Dill officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Parkview Methodist Church.
Henry
Martha Rebecca Henry, 86, of Marion, passed away May 5, 2002 at Salem Springlake Care Center. She was a member of Marion Baptist Church.
Surviving are a son, Steven Henry of Marion; two daughters, Stephanie Ramage of Smithland and Kathleen Henry of Chattanooga, Tenn.; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m., May 11 at Mapleview Cemetery with Dr. Darrell Clarke officiating.
Gilbert Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Cook
Austin Cook, 76, of Marion, passed away April 29, 2002 at Crittenden Hospital. He was a former Crittenden County Sheriff; a former Marion Police Officer; a former employee of The Peoples Bank in Marion; an elder and member of Sugar Grove Cumberland Presbyterian Church; and former employee of Cook's Corner Flea Market (see story, page 1A).
Surviving are his wife, Frankie Cook of Marion; a daughter, Nancy Robertson of Marion; two sons, Clippy Hughes of Marion and David Cook of Dallas; three brothers, Joe Cook of Vincinnes, Ind., Percy Cook and I.W. Cook, Jr., both of Marion; four sisters, Doris Brantley of Marion, Martha Kirk of Dawson Springs, Janet St. Clair of Owensboro and Louise Weldon of Newburgh, Ind.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, I.W. Cook, Sr., and Harpye Herrin Cook; and a sister, Lena Ruth Wittman.
Funeral services were held May 1 at Gilbert Funeral Home with Rev. Frank McCallum and Rev. Leslie Chapman officiating. Burial was in Mapleview Cemetery.
Van Pelt
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Mary Avery "Mitzi" Van Pelt, 77, passed away March 20, 2002 at Chesapeake General Hospital.
She earned a degree from Old Dominion University, and later worked as a tour guide in Washington conducting tours in French, Japanese, Italian, Spanish and English. She was active in the King's Daughters and served on the Board of Directors of the Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters.
Her husband, retired USMC captain James C. Van Pelt, grew up in Marion.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, James C. "Jeff" Van Pelt, Jr., and William Thomas "Tom" Van Pelt; a daughter, Amanda Van Pelt Scott; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
Van Pelt was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

Elder
SALEM, Ky. - Debra Jean Elder, 47, passed away April 27, 2002 at Livingston Hospital.
Surviving are her husband, Jack Elder of Salem; three brothers, Steve Tramel of Marion, David Tramel of Corbin and Daniel Tramel of Evansville; two sisters, Suzanne Turner of Sidney, Ohio and Julie Haraughty of Santa Claus, Ind.; her mother, Marilyn Tramel of Evansville; a son, Jason McDowell of Marion; a daughter, Jeana McDowell of Salem; two stepsons, Robert Elder of Marion and James Elder of Salem; three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father, Fred Tramel.
Funeral services were held April 30 at Boyd Funeral Home with Rev. Max Hanson officiating. Burial was in Salem Cemetery.
Travis
Gerald Byron Travis, 56, passed away April 25, 2002 at Shady Lawn Nursing Home in Cadiz. He was a member of Caldwell Springs Baptist Church, Woodmen of the World and was a Kentucky Colonel.
Surviving are a son, Benjamin Stanley Travis of Dawson Springs; and his mother, Marie Travis of Marion.
He was preceded in death by his father, Byron Travis.
Funeral services were held April 28 at Caldwell Springs Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.
Cochran
Norma Faye Cochran, 53, passed away April 25, 2002 at Western Baptist Hospital. She was a former employee of Western Kentucky Quarter Horse Sales, a current employee of the Crittenden County Board of Education and a shareholder in Par-4 Plastics, Inc. She was of Pentecostal faith.
Surviving are a daughter, Crystal Belt of Paducah; a son, Ryan McDaniel of Marion; her father, Rev. Leon Cochran of Carmi, Ill.; her mother, Ella Mae Mullins Cochran of Carmi, Ill.; two sisters, Denise Karns of Norris City, Ill., and Diana Nelms of Benton, Ill.; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services were held April 28 at Gilbert Funeral Home. Burial was in Mapleview Cemetery.
