MOLINE, Ill. - Edith "Joy" Hodge, 81, of Moline, formerly of Marion, Ky., passed away Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003 at Trinity Medical Center in Rock Island.
Services were Saturday, Feb. 15, at Wendt Funeral Home in Moline. Burial was in Greenview Memorial Gardens in East Moline.
She was a member of Eastern Star of Kentucky and Bethel Wesley United Methodist Church in Moline.
Her parents were Walter and Artha James. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Glen Hodge; two sisters and one grandson.
Survivors include her children, A.G. Belt, Dennis Belt, Virginia Hamerlinck, Walter Hodge and Sue Eckroth; 21 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brother, Perry James and many nieces and nephews.
Jenkins
STURGIS, Ky. - Georgia "Jo" Jenkins, 68, of Sturgis, formerly Jo Travis of Marion, passed away Saturday, Feb. 15, 2003 at Methodist Hospital in Union County.
She worked 25 years for the Department of Defense, Selective Service and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Survivors include her husband of 39 years, Donan Jenkins of Sturgis; one sister, Shan Shiver of Wetumpka, Ala.; one brother, Douglas Travis of Paducah; one niece and several nephews.
Services were Tuesday, Feb. 11 at Whitsell Funeral Home in Sturgis, with Daniel Askew and Sam Belo officiating, followed by burial in Odd Fellow Cemetery in Boxville.
Turner, 101
Marvin Turner, 101, of Marion, passed away Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003 at Crittenden County Convalescent Center.
Mr. Turner was a member of Marion Baptist Church. He founded and owned Turner and Conyer Lumber Company in Marion from 1954 to 1984.
Survivors include his wife, Bonnie J. Turner of Marion; four granddaughters, Patty Martin, Vickie Watson, Debbie Crider and Jennye Cook; three stepdaughters; two stepsons; eight great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and nine stepgreat-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie L. Turner; two daughters, two sisters and one great-great-grandson. His parents were James Henry and Sally Turner.
Funeral services are 2 p.m. Thursday (today) at Gilbert Funeral Home with the Rev. Darrell Clarke officiating. Burial will be in Mapleview Cemetery.
VanHooser
Jim VanHooser, 65, of Princeton, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003, at his daughter's home.
Mr. VanHooser was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and a former factory supervisor. He attended First Baptist Church of Princeton and was a member of Princeton Elks Lodge.
His parents were J.R. and Eulah Varnell VanHooser.
He is survived by one daughter, Valerie McDonald of Lyon County; three brothers, Carroll VanHooser of Norwich, Vt., David VanHooser of Huntsville, Ala., Joe VanHooser of Princeton; and one sister, Mary Ruth Chandler of Culver, Ind.
Funeral service was Saturday, Feb. 8 at Morgan's Funeral Home in Princeton, with burial at Dixon Cemetery in Grand Rivers. The Rev. Tom Hughes officiated.
Fritts
BRADENTON, Fla. - Rebecca Fritts, 92, of Bradenton, formerly of Marion, passed away Monday, Feb. 3, 2003 at LHS Riverfront Hospital in Bradenton.
She was a member of Crooked Creek Baptist Church, Crooked Creek Homemakers and NARFE.
Survivors include one daughter, Betty Peek of Bradenton; one son, Billy Fritts of Bradenton; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.
Funeral services were Friday, Feb. 7 at Gilbert Funeral Home with the Rev. Tommy Hodge officiating. Burial was in Crooked Creek Cemetery.
Riley
Lela T. Wheeler Riley, 88, of Marion, passed away Thursday, Feb. 26, 2003 at Crittenden Hospital.
She was a member of Union Baptist Church, and a member of the Eastern Star-Salem Lodge for 60 years.
Survivors include two sons, James Ray Wheeler of Crown Point, Ind., and Larry Wheeler of Marion; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Mrs. Riley was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence E. Wheeler; a son, Oynaul Wheeler; and two sisters. Her parents were Lee and Ruby Ladd Loftis.
Eastern Star rites were Saturday, Feb. 8 at Boyd Funeral Home in Salem. Services were Sunday, Feb. 9 at the funeral home with the Rev. A.C. Hodge officiating. Burial was in Union Cemetery.
Newcom
June Phillips Newcom, 76, passed away in West Palm Beach, Fla., Jan. 28, 2003.
She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Cecil Milton Newcom, formerly of Mattoon; two daughters, Doris Ann Case of Wickliffe of Joyce Lynn of Phoenix, Ariz.; and a grandson.
Orr
Hazel D. Orr, 87, of Marion, passed away Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003 at Salem Springlake Care Center.
She is survived by one daughter, Janice Wright of Marion; two sons, Gerald and Ronald Orr, both of Marion; one brother, Reed Duffy of Henderson; four grandchildren and three great-granddaughters.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernie Clem Orr.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Feb. 11 at Gilbert Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry Thurman officiating. Burial was in Mapleview Cemetery.
Johnson
SALEM, Ky. - David Johnson, 17, of Salem, passed away Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003 at Livingston Hospital.
A member of Pinckneyville Baptist Church and VICA, he was employed at Hardee's.
Surviving are his parents, Jerry and Connie Noel Johnson of Salem; one sister, Delaine Johnson Sherer; two nephews, Dylan Johnson Sherer and Jordan David Thomason; and several aunts and uncles.
His grandparents were Betty and Doug Bruce and Ted and Elaine Noel.
Services were Wednesday, Feb. 12, at Boyd Funeral Home. The Rev. Leslie Joyce officiated, with burial in Salem Cemetery.
Shuecraft
SALEM, Ky. - Myrtle Shuecraft, 83, of Salem, passed away Friday, Jan. 31, 2003 at Parkview Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Paducah.
She was a member of Lighthouse Pentecostal Church.
Mrs. Shuecraft is survived by two sons, Amon Shuecraft of Kingsport, Tenn., and Ricky Shuecraft of Salem; eight daughters, Mary L. King and Janice Morris, both of Paducah, Jearldeen Lanham of Gary, Ind., Linda F. Haney of Salem, Pauline Potter of Portage, Ind., Phyllis Garrett of Eddyville, Patricia Wring of Paducah and Cheryl Heavrin of Panama City, Fla.; 22 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Vivian Amon Shuecraft; one grandchild and one great-grandchild. Her mother was Rado Damron.
Services were Sunday, Feb. 2, at Boyd Funeral Home in Salem with Sister Judy Warren officiating. Burial was in Salem Cemetery.
Escue
CARRIER MILLS, Ill. - Charles G. Escue, 60, of Carrier Mills, passed away Monday, Jan. 27, 2003 at Harrisburg Medical Center.
Mr. Escue was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War, and a coal miner. He was a member of American Legion Post #364 in Carrier Mills.
He is survived by his wife, Gerald Ann Robinson; mother, Lorene Writtenberry Escue of Marion, Ky.; and one sister, Louise McDowell of Marion, Ky.
He was preceded in death by an infant brother. His father was Gordon Escue.
Services were Wednesday, Jan. 29 at Absher-Nicholson Funeral Home in Harrisburg with the Rev. Joey Dunning officiating. Burial was in Salem Cemetery with military honors.
