Herron
EVANSVILLE, Ind. Senator Paul Herron Jr., 80, D-Henderson, passed away June 16, 2004 at St. Mary's Hospital after a short illness.
Known affectionately as "Pie" or to many young people as "Daddy Pie," Senator Herron had served in the Senate since 1995, twice winning re-election.
"Senator Herron was as good a man who ever lived," said Senator Ed Worley, D-Richmond, Senate Democratic Leader. "His word was his bond and he had a wealth of wisdom and experience. His fellow Senators will miss him, and so will the people he represented so well in Frankfort."
"Senator Herron was a gentleman in the truest sense and I was honored to call him my friend," said Senator Bob Jackson, D-Murray, Senate Democratic Whip. "Paul loved his family very much and he loved Western Kentucky. No one worked harder for the people of the 4th District than Paul Herron. He will be sorely missed."
Before his election to the Senate, Senator Herron served as Henderson County Judge-Executive for eight years, beginning in 1986. "He always had the will of the people in his heart," said Henderson County Judge-Executive Sandy Watkins, who was once a political rival of Senator Herron's, and is now a friend. "He believed in the little man and in the working man."
As a member of the Senate, Senator Herron worked with local officials and his fellow legislators to bring home millions in state funds for projects throughout his six-county district (Henderson, Union, Webster, Crittenden, Caldwell and Livingston counties). These funds have been used to improve roads, construct new water and sewer lines, establish centers for education and technology, assist agricultural initiatives, support senior citizens and provide new centers for recreation, among other initiatives.
Education was always Senator Herron's top priority. The Paul Herron Technology Center in Union County, which provides new opportunities for both high school and adult learners, bears his name.
He chaired the Western Kentucky Legislative Caucus, a bi-partisan group that focuses on the needs of the western region of the state, recommending legislation and supporting projects.
Before moving to the Senate, Senator Herron was Henderson County Judge-Executive for eight years. During his time in office, he laid the groundwork for the construction of the new Henderson County Detention Center and led efforts to improve bridges and roadways throughout the county.
Before becoming involved in public service, Senator Herron ran Herron Auction Realty, which he founded in 1952. His grandson, Kevin Herron, now runs the family business.
A native of Union County, Senator Herron graduated from Sturgis High School, where he played for the great Sturgis Bears. Senator Herron was All-State and he attended the University of Indiana on an athletic scholarship.
He soon made his way back to Kentucky to marry Mary McCann Herron, a decision that he calls the best he ever made. The Herrons were married
for over 62 years.
Senator Herron was a member of First United Methodist Church in Henderson. He also had been a member of the Army Reserve, Moose, Elks, American Legion, DeKoven Masonic Lodge #577, Rizpah Temple Madisonville, and the Henderson County Shrine Club.
Awards included the Henderson Audubon Board of Realtors, Realtor of the Year 1976; and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Auctioneers of Western Kentucky.
He had served on numerous boards including the American Red Cross, Henderson Co. Senior Citizens, Drug/Alcohol Council, Earl C, Clements Job Corps, Human Relations, Industrial Foundation, Economic Development, Literacy Council, Green River Area Development and Audubon Area Community Services.
In addition to his wife, Mary, survivors include two sons (and spouses), Paul III and Brenda Marks-Herron, and Michael and Julie Herron; grandchildren (and spouses) Michele and Bill Dunn, Mark and Marcy Herron, Marcy and Chad Sutton, Kevin Herron, Graham Herron, Erica Winebarger, and Troy and Tracy Marks; and great-grandchildren, Megan and Kelsey Dunn, Taylor and Tara Herron, and Clay Sutton.
