Funeral services for Willard Johnson, 73, of Marion, will be held at 11 a.m., Dec. 6, 2001 at Boyd Funeral Home in Salem. Rev. David Winders and Rev. Herbert Alexander will officiate, with burial in White's Chapel Cemetery.
Johnson passed away Dec. 3, 2001 at Western Baptist Hospital.
Surviving are his wife, Thelma Johnson of Marion; two sons, Larry Johnson and Bruce Johnson, both of Marion; a daughter, Carolyn Cessna of Madisonville; a brother, James Johnson of Marion; and four grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to White's Chapel Cemetery Fund, 3531 U.S. 60 West, Marion, KY 42064.
VanHooser
Funeral services for Ruth E. VanHooser, 93, of Marion, were held Nov. 20 at Gilbert Funeral Home. Rev. Cortis Hill and Rev. Bill Crabtree officiated. Burial was in Mapleview Cemetery.
VanHooser, a member of Calvery Baptist Church in Crayne, passed away Nov. 18, 2001 at Crittenden Hospital.
She is survived by a son, Bobby Don Gilland of Marion; two daughters, Helen Corn of Litchfield, Ill., and Jean Foster of Springfield, Ill.; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two husbands, James Gilland and Luke VanHooser; and two daughters, Virginia Corn and Laverne Croft.
Fritts
Annie Fritts, 83, of Hickory, formerly of Marion, passed away Nov. 20, 2001 at Jackson Purchase Medical Center. She was a member of Viola Baptist Church and was a 1976 graduate of Mid-Continent Bible College.
She is survived by her husband, John Kenneth Fritts; a daughter, Wilma Kay Lewis of Poplar Bluff, Mo.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Alma Postelweight Conger.
Funeral services were held at Gilbert Funeral Home Nov. 24 with Dr. Ray Carroll officiating. Burial was in Crooked Creek Cemetery.
Smith
Funeral services were held Nov. 27 for Helen L. Smith, 81, of Marion. She passed away Nov. 25, 2001 at Crittenden Hospital.
Sister Lucy Tedrick officiated the ceremony. Burial was in Mapleview Cemetery.
She is survived by several cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Smith.
Moore
James Bruce Moore, 69, of Marion, passed away Nov. 26, 2001 at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville. He was a retired administrator in the Crittenden County School District, a graduate of Murray State University and charter president of tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity at Murray State and a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Air Force.
Surviving are his wife, Patricia Moore, of Marion; two daughters, Denette Wynn of Marion and Alison Gilchrist of Lone Oak; a granddaughter; and two step grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lyle and Sally Eskew Moore.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Nov. 29 at Gilbert Funeral Home with Rev. Bill McCormick and Rev. Jack Ferguson officiating. Burial will be in Mapleview Cemetery.

Sisco
James C. Sisco, 54, of Puryear, Tenn., passed away Nov. 17, 2001 at Henry County Medical Center.
Funeral services were held at Gilbert Funeral Home Nov. 20 with Rev. Larry Williams officiating. Burial was in Whites Chapel Cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Wilma Sisco of Puryear; his ex-wife, Martha Harris of Puryear; two sons, Ricky Lee Sisco of Mountain Grove, Mo., and John Curtis Sisco of Calvert City; two daughters, Martha Helen Emery of Cabool, Mo., and Jeanie Marie Thomason of Providence; a sister, Becky Mae Fraley of Wheatcroft; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Curtis and Helen Sisco; a brother; and a sister.
McDowell
Thelma McDowell, 86, of Fredonia, passed away Nov. 16, 2001 at Western Baptist Hospital in Paducah. She was a homemaker and member of Glenn's Chapel United Methodist Church in Lyon County.
Surviving are two sons, Ricky McDowell and Eddy L. "Ike" McDowell, both of Fredonia; three sisters, Rhea Stinnett of Dycusburg, Dorris Thompson of West Memphis, Ark., and Ruth Cooke of St. Louis; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Nov. 18 at Lakeland Funeral Chapel in Eddyville with Rev. Gary Carlton officiating. Burial was in Glenn's Chapel Cemetery.
She was preceded in death by two stepsons, Joe McDowell and Don McDowell; three brothers, William Baldwin, Charlie Baldwin and Hugh Baldwin; five sisters, Allie Ennis, Byrd Dycus, Kathryn Grubbs, Tylene Owens and Lucille Faughn; and her parents, Martin Luther and Alma Virginia Martin Baldwin.
Dills
Nell Dills, 90, of Clay, passed away Nov. 16, 2001 at Shemwell Nursing Home in Providence. She was a member of Shady Grove Eastern Star No. 505; the White Shrine of Marion; and First Baptist Church in Clay.
Survivors include two sisters, Ora Belle Winstead of Dearborn Heights, Mich., and Virginia Beinkampen of Chicago; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred, and a son, Bobby.
Funeral services were held Nov. 19 at Vanover Funeral Home in Clay with burial in Oddfellow Cemetery, also in Clay.
Grandstaff
H. Preston Grandstaff, 81, of Menomonie, Wisc., passed away April 12, 2001 at Myrtle Werth Hospital-Mayo Health System in Menomonie.
Grandstaff was born in Tolu and attended grade school in Rosiclare, Ill. He trained in optical dispensing at White Haines Optical Co., in Springfield, Ill, and worked for Uhleman Optical in Springfield. He later worked in Minnesota and as manager of Duffens Contact Lens Co., in Kansas, fitting both artificial eyes and contact lens for ophthalmologists.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Eliza; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew J. and Jessie P. Bryles Grandstaff; a brother, Robert Grandstaff; and a nephew.
Funeral services were held April 18 at Christ Lutheran Church in Menomonie with burial in Christ Lutheran/Halvorson Cemetery.
Phinney
Former FDR bodyguard dies at 94
Waldo Adam Phinney Sr., 94, of Port Royal, S.C., passed away Oct. 29, 2001 at Beaufort Memorial Hospital. Graveside services were held Nov. 1 at Beaufort National Cemetery.
Phinney was born in Borne, Mass. He served in the U.S. Marine corps for 31 years. He was a marksmanship coach at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C., and was one of the first Marines transferred to the legation guard at Peking, China. It was at that station that he won his first shooters medal. After two years in China, he was transferred to Quantico.
While stationed at Quantico, he served as bodyguard to President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1934.
He joined the Marine Rifle Team in 1933 and served with the old Floating Battalion, a forerunner of the present-day Fleet Marine Force.
He was on the rifle team at Quantico for two years before making his first trip to Camp Perry in 1935. He set a new record in 1936 when he won the National Open Individual Rifle championship at Camp Perry. He also established a new record at Quantico in 1937. Between matches in those years, he served at posts across the U.S.
Firing for the final time as team shooter in 1940, Phinney attended an officers candidate course at the beginning of World War II. He also served in the Korean War. He won the Daniel Boone Trophy for his marksmanship.
He served from Warrant Officer to 1st Lt., and served with the 6th Marine Division in Okinawa. He received the Silver and Bronze stars. He retired to Port Royal, S.C., in 1957, known as the "Man of the Sea." He was also a Mason for more than 60 years and a member of the Port Royal Lodge.
Surviving are his wife, Catherine Stentiford Phinney of Port Royal; three daughters, Priscilla Parmley and Marlyn Graddy of Marion, and Janet Sue Woodrich of Beaufort, S.C.; a son, Waldo "Wally" Phinney, Jr., of Beaufort; 15 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
