Delia Mae Moore Nolan, 89, of Prestonsburg, died Friday, August 23, 2002, at Highlands Regional Medical Center.
Born on June 2, 1913, at Lily, Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late John Moore and Rebecca M. Jones Moore. She retired from the Jefferson County Board of Education; was a member of the First Baptist Church, Prestons-burg, and the Prestonsburg Senior Citizens.
Survivors include one daughter, Betty Kalos of Prestonsburg; four sisters, Beulah Cassidy of Corbin, Wanda Casey of Keavy, Rotha Smith of Lily, and Edith Cole of Hamilton, Ohio; three grandchildren, Dee Dee Callis of Prestonsburg, Mitchell Kalos of Charleston, West Virginia, Brad Kalos of New York, New York; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, August 26, at 11 a.m., at the First Baptist Church, Prestonsburg, with Dr. Floyd Price officiating.
Interment was at Highland Memorial Park, Staffordsville, under the direction of Carter Funeral Home, Prestonsburg.
Pallbearers: Jacob Callis, Nick Kalos, Daniel Kalos, Dustin Kalos, Paul Nunn, Pete Jarvis, Ron Johnson, Cam Garrett, Estill Carter, Andy Elliott, and Charles Hale.
Ronald A. Balch
Ronald A. Balch, 55, of Heidelberg, died Thursday, August 22, 2002, at St. Joseph
Hospital, in Lexington, after a brief illness.
Born January 8, 1947, in Montgomery, Alabama, he was the son of Graham Balch and
Dorothy Brown. He was a disabled construction worker and a veteran of the United States
Army Special Forces unit.
He is survived by his parents; one son, Patrick (Roxanne) Balch, of Hazard; one grandson,
Roman Patrick Balch, of Hazard; and his ex-wife, Challis Balch, also of Hazard.
Funeral services were conducted on Saturday, August 24, at 4 p.m., at the Clear Creek
Free Church, at Fisty. Baptist ministers officiated.
Burial followed at Beech Creek Cemetery, at Emmalena, under the direction of Nelson-
Frazier Funeral Home, Martin.
Visitation was at the church.
Frances Hamilton
Frances Hamilton, 96, of Greenwich, Ohio, died Wednesday, August 21, 2002, at the Brethren Care Nursing Home, in Ashland, Ohio.
Born October 4, 1905, in Galveston, she was the daughter of the late Solas and Mary (Hamilton) Akers. She was the widow of Joe Hamilton. She and her husband owned and operated several stores, including Hamilton’s Grocery, in Craynor. They were farmers who operated several dairies throughout Kentucky and Ohio, moving to the Greenwich area in 1950, where they helped operate the J&F Bargain Center. She was a member of the Ruggles Grange and the Ashland Senior Citizens Center. She was a member of the Little Pilgrim Home Church, in Ruggles Twp., Ohio.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one grandson, Frernon Hamilton Jr.; four brothers; and, six sisters.
Survivors include one son, Frernon (Melvina Pearl) Hamilton, of Greenwich; and, three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 24, at 10:00 a.m., at the Little Pilgrim Home Old Regular Baptist Church, in Ruggles Twp., under the direction of the Eastman Funeral Home, New London, Ohio.
Burial will follow in the Ashland County Memorial Park under the direction of the Eastman Funeral Home.
Visitation will be held Friday (today) at the church.
John Rice Jr.
John Rice Jr., 76, died Tuesday, August 20, 2002, at his residence.
Born October 3, 1925, in Glo, he was the son of John W. and Willie Mae (Snavely) Rice.
He was a Marine veteran of World War II, having served as a military policeman in Guam.
He owned and operated a market and several service stations. He served as bar manager at the V.F.W. Post #3030. He was a retired meat cutter, who enjoyed woodworking in his spare time.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, William; and two sisters, Helen and
Aileen.
He is survived by his wife, Hazel Pegg Rice; one son, Phillip John Rice, of Otsego Michigan; two daughters, Linda (Dennis) Snider, of Plainwell, and Colleen (Boyd) Morris,
of Seward, Alaska; two grandchildren, Jeremiah (Crystal) Morris, of Wasilla, Alaska, and Andrea (Thomas) Boor, of Seward, Alaska; two great-grandchildren, Triston and Haley
Boor; three brothers, Luther (Florence) Rice, of Allegan, Curtis (Edith) Rice and Donal (Mary) Rice, both of Warren, Michigan; one sister, BettyLou (Reaford) Blankenship, of Oak
Harbor, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 24, at 1 p.m., at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, Michigan. Chaplain Donal Ray Rice will officiate.
Military honors will be conducted by V.F.W. Post #3030.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Wings of Hope Hospice.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, at the funeral home.
James Daniels
James Daniels, 75, of Drift, died Saturday, August 17, 2002, at the McDowell Appalachian Regional Hospital, following an extended illness.
Born April 29, 1927, in Johnson County, he was the son of the late James S. Daniels and Lovie Dutton Daniels. He was a retired coal miner, a member of the UMWA, and a member of the Church of Christ at Prestonsburg.
He is survived by his wife, Rosa Young Daniels; four sons, Raymond Daniels, of Martin, Gary Daniels, of Frenchburg, Richard Daniels and Shawn Daniels, both of Drift; and three daughters, Vaughn (Nina) Salisbury, of Hunter, Karen Shepherd, and Lydia Gaye Daniels, both of Drift.
Other survivors include five brothers, Ben Daniels, of North Carolina, Marion (Nicky) Daniels, of Michigan, Walter Daniels, of Ohio, Lee Francis Daniels, of New Jersey, Earl Robinett, of Kentucky; four sisters, Dorthy Daniels, of New Jersey, Bulah DeLong, of Kentucky, Ruby Creger, of North Carolina, and Floretta Shepherd, of Kentucky; 1 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and three step great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four siblings and one grandchild.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 20, at 1 p.m., at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, with Church of Christ ministers officiating.
Burial was in the Drift Cemetery, at Drift, under the direction of the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home.
Visitation was at the funeral home.
Josephine Yates
Josephine Yates, 70, of Printer, died Tuesday, August 20, 2002, at the Clark Regional Medical Care Center, in Winchester.
Born August 27, 1931, in Printer, she was the daughter of the late Robert Meade and Bertha Hamilton Meade. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Denzil Yates; one son, Chris Yates; two daughters, Gwinna Davis Carroll and Anna Doris Yates; 4 great- grandchildren; and, 1 great-great grandchild.
Survivors include five sons, Carter Yates, of Martin, Steven Yates, of Printer, Denzil Yates Jr., of Magoffin County, Danny Yates and Tim Yates, both of Garrett; five daughters, Connie Mullins and Pearlene Yates, both of Printer, Nadine Herrell, of Columbus, Ohio, Helen Isaac, of Martin, and LaDonna Briggs, of Prestonsburg; two brothers, Ike Meade and James Meade, both of Printer; seven sisters, Delsa Adams, of Viper, Wanda Riley, of Harold, Shirley McKinney and Ethel Meade, both of Printer, Irene Conn, of Martin, Gladys McKinney, of Prestonsburg, and Pauline Conn, of Cave Run; 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Josephine Yates will be conducted Thursday, August 22, at 1:00 p.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, with Elders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints officiating.
Burial will follow in the Meade Cemetery, at Printer, under the professional care of Hall Funeral Home.
Visitation is at the funeral home.
Pearl LeMaster Ellis
Pearl LeMaster Ellis, 85, of Langley, died Friday, August 16, 2002, at Highlands Regional Medical Center, Prestonsburg.
Born November 20, 1916, in Whitehouse, she was the daughter of the late John LeMaster and Maxie Parsons LeMaster.
She was a retired cook, having worked 28 years at Maytown Elementary School as an employee of the Floyd County school system, and was a member of the Zebulon Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James B. Ellis.
Survivors include three sons, Bucky D. Ellis, of Wellington, Charles H. Ellis, of Syracuse,
Indiana, and Jeff Ellis, of Van Lear; four daughters, Joy Gibson, Sandy Moore and Carolyn
Moore, all of Langley, and Patricia Leonard, of Van Lear; one brother, Frank LeMaster, of
Baltimore, Maryland; three sisters, Agnes Rittinger, of Baltimore, Maryland, Jo Anne
Edlow, of Frankfort, and Jesse David, of Paintsville; 27 grandchildren and 39 great- grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents she was preceded in death by one son, Jimmy Ray Ellis, and one daughter, Martha Slone.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday, August 18, at 2: 00 p.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, with Clergyman Tom Harding officiating.
Burial followed in Davidson Memorial Gardens, Ivel, under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home.
Visitation was at the funeral home.
