Artie T. Amburgey, age 89, of Bypro, widow of Lawrence Amburgey, died Wednesday, July 18, 2002, in the McDowell Appalachian Regional Hospital.
She was born June 27, 1913, at Kite, in Knott County, the daughter of the late Will and Alice Slone Thornsberry. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by five sons, Ezra Amburgey of Prestonsburg, James C. Amburgey of Hazel Green, Alabama, Marvin Amburgey of Pineville, Kenneth Amburgey of Searcy, Arkansas, and David Amburgey of Prestonsburg; five daughters, Loretta Keibler of Warren, Michigan, Emma Jean Amburgey of Elizabethtown, Marcella Amburgey and Shirley Skaggs, both of Brandenburg, and Judith Ann Amburgey of Bypro; one sister, Ruth Huff of Bevinsville; 18 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by four sons, Willis Lee, Curtis Ray, Danny, and Franklin D. Amburgey.
Funeral services for Mrs. Amburgey were conducted Monday, July 22, 2002, at 11 a.m., at the Joppa Old Regular Baptist Church, Melvin, with Regular Baptist ministers officiating.
Burial was in the Buckingham Cemetery at Bevinsville, with the Hall Funeral Home, Martin, caring for those arrangements.
Serving as pallbearers: Richard Amburgey, Terry Amburgey, Kenneth Amburgey, Larry Elders, Mike Elders, and Billy Keibler.
Honorary pallbearers: Jamie Amburgey, Christopher Skaggs, and Brandon and Ian Amburgey.
William Hite Martin Jr.
William Hite Martin Jr., age 66, of Prestonsburg, husband of the late Joyce Slone Martin, passed away Wednesday, July 17, 2002, at this residence.
He was born December 28, 1935, in Garrett, the son of the late William Hite Martin and Nora Stephens Martin. He was a retired Kentucky/West Virginia Gas Company employee.
Survivors include a daughter, Tiffanie Martin of London; one step-daughter, Janie Chalafoux of San Pierre, Indiana; one step-son, Kenny Messer of San Pierre, Indiana; one brother, Robert O. Martin of Russell; one grandchild, Ryan Day of London; five step-grandchildren, and four step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for William Hite Martin Jr., were conducted Saturday, July 20, 2002, at 1 p.m., at the Hall Funeral Home, Martin.
Burial was in the I.B. Slone Cemetery, Hindman, under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home.
Visitation was at the funeral home.
Pallbearers: Aaron DeRossett, Lester Jones, Lowell Conley, Jack “Red” Stephens, John Rosenberg and Bob Burchett.

Betty Allen Frances
Betty Allen Frances, age 77, a former Floyd County resident, passed away June 29, 2002, at Hospice House Woodside, Pinellas Park, Florida, after a long bout with cancer.
Born March 22, 1925, at Lackey, she was the daughter of the late Luther and Helen Hart Allen of Garrett, and the granddaughter of the late Rev. Green B. and Eliza Patton Allen.
Betty was a graduate of Garrett High School. She moved to St. Petersburg, Florida in 1973, from Dayton, Ohio. Her husband, Oscar L. Frances, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, William Randall of Duneden, Florida; several nieces and nephews; a host of cousins, including Gloria M. Osborne of Melbourne, Florida; and many devoted friends.
A graveside memorial service was held Monday, July 15, at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery, St. Petersburg, Florida- National Cremation Society, Clearwater, Florida.
Barbara Caudill
Barbara Caudill, age 64, of Beaver, wife of Arthur Caudill, died Thursday, July 18, 2002, in the Highlands Regional Medical Center, Prestonsburg.
She was born January 23, 1938, in Beaver; a daughter of the late Tom and Fannie Hall Tackett. She was a homemaker and a member of the Samaria Regular Baptist Church, Teaberry.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Kenneth Ray Caudill (Tina Lynn) and Arthur Caudill Jr., both of Beaver; one daughter, Angela Caudill Gilley (Randy) of Beaver; three brothers, Georgie Tackett, Clifford Tackett, and Hatler Tackett, all of Beaver; three sisters, Carolyn Newsome of Beaver, Lacie Teems and Mary Belle Hall Clayton, both of Ellijay, Georgia, and two grandchildren, Shane Caudill and Brittany Caudill.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by six brothers, Thomas Jr., Amos, Willie, Andy Jack, Green and Henry Tackett; three sisters, Vernia Paige, Roberta Tackett and Wanda Tackett.
Funeral services for Barbara Caudill were conducted Sunday, July 21, at noon, in the Samaria Regular Baptist Church, Teaberry, with Regular Baptist ministers officiating.
Burial was in the Caudill Cemetery, Beaver, with Hall Funeral Home, caring for those arrangements.
Pallbearers: Phillip Newsome, Brian Tackett, Amos Tackett, Jason Caudill, Roger Caudill, Shane Caudill, Clinis Newsome Jr., Scott Tackettt, Jeffrey Paige and Chad Rogers.
Frederick Timothy (Tim) Shelton
Frederick Timothy (Tim) Shelton, 36, of Martin, Ky., died Wednesday, July 17, 2002, at his residence, following a sudden illness.
Born August 16, 1965, in Wabash, Ind., he was the son of Fred Shelton Jr., and Brenda Lester Shelton of Martin, Ky. He was a disabled diesel mechanic.
He is survived by his wife, Pamela Ousley Shelton.
Other survivors include one brother, Shaun Shelton of Martin, Ky.; four sisters, Regina Salisbury of River, Ky., Elizabeth Martin of Martin, Ky., Patricia Couch of Oklahoma City, Ok., and Wanda Adkins
of Ashland, Ky.; one grandson, Tyler Jenkins; one step-son, Brent Allen Jenkins, both of West Liberty, Ky.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, July 20, 2002, at 1 p.m., at Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, in Martin, Ky., with Buddy Jones officiating.
Burial will be in the Drift Cemetery at Drift, Ky., under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home.
Visitation is at the funeral home.

Murl Prater
Murl Prater, age 74, of Hueysville, widower of Katherine Cooley Prater, died Saturday, July 13, at his residence.
He was born December 28, 1927, in Hueysville, a son of the late Jackson and Lula Prater. He was a retired coal miner who worked for Inco Coal Co.
Survivors include two sons, Bruce Prater and Daryl Prater, both of Hueysville; seven brothers, Arnold Prater, Henry Prater and Robert Prater, all of Hueysville, Mitch Prater of Langley, Clarence Prater and Rhodes Prater, both of Prestons-burg, and Burl Prater of Indiana; two sisters, Katheleen and Martha Prater, both of Indiana; and two grandchildren.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Anthony Shawn Prater.
Funeral services for Murl Prater were conducted Tuesday, July 16, at 11 a.m., in the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, with Paul Rice and Jerry Manns officiating.
Burial was in the Martin Cemetery, Martin, with the Hall Funeral Home, caring for those arrangements.

Paul Salisbury
Paul Salisbury, 63, of Teaberry, Ky., died Sunday, July 14, 2002, at his residence, following a sudden illness.
Born June 4, 1939, in Floyd County, Ky., he was the son of the late Arnold and Velvia Younce Salisbury. He was a DAV member at Betsy Layne, Ky., and a member of Little Rosa Regular Baptist Church at McDowell, Ky.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Howell Salisbury of Teaberry, Ky.
Other survivors include one son, Paul Douglas Salisbury of Teaberry, Ky.; two daughters, Paula Johnson of Teaberry, Ky. and Emma Lou Burchett of Ivel, Ky.; one step-daughter, Rita Johnson of Columbus, Oh.; four brothers, Raymond Salisbury of Eastern, Ky., Hoie “Bud” Salisbury of Albion, Ind., Gordon “Nut” Salisbury and Dean Salisbury, both of Kendalville, Ind.; five sisters, Vernice McDaniels, Shelby Jean Short, Ora Wicker and Flora Borger, all of Kendallville, Ind., and Pelinna Dirrim of Scottsburg, Al.; and nine grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Clara Salisbury.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, July 17, 2002, at 1 p.m., at the Little Rosa Regular Baptist Church at McDowell, Ky., with Regular Baptist ministers officiating.
Burial will be in the Salisbury Family Cemetery at Printer, Ky., under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, Ky.
Visitation is at the Little Rosa Regular Baptist Church at McDowell, Ky.
Gertrude Carroll
Gertrude Carroll, age 59, of Martin, wife of Bill Carroll, died Saturday, July 13, in the Central Baptist Hospital, Lexington.
She was born September 8, 1942, in Floyd County, a daughter of the late Ernie and Thelma Francis Jenkins. She was a homemaker.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by seven sons, Michael and Elmer Carroll of Martin, Bill Carroll Jr. of Banner, Stevie and Jeffery Carroll of Prestonsburg, Charles Carroll of Lexington, and James Randy Robinette of Lexington; two daughters, Brenda Howard of Royalton, and Lisa Hall of Prestonsburg; five brothers, Ernie Jenkins of Ohio, Robert Jenkins of Inez, Ben, Ray, and Will Jenkins, all of Paintsville; three sisters, Geraldine Owens of Paintsville, Rose Ferguson of Red Bush, and Rusha Rector of Tennessee; and 14 grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Terry Carroll.
Funeral services for Gertrude Carroll were conducted Tuesday, July 16, at 1 p.m., in the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, with James Smith, James Price and Mark Tackett officiating.
