James Robert Slone, age 16, of Wayland, Ky., passed away, Friday, July 5, 2002, in Little Paint, Prestonsburg, Ky.
He was born December 2, 1985, in Pikeville, Ky., the son of Walter Scott Slone of Wayland, Ky., and Vivian Lee Coker Ferguson of Little Paint, Ky.
James Robert was a student at Allen Central High School, Eastern, Ky., where he was a member of the golf team; also chosen for Who’s Who for High School Students; and a member of the Wayland United Methodist Church, Wayland, Ky.
Survivors include three brothers, Walter Scott Slone II, and Charles Nevan Slone, both of Garrett, Ky., and Byron Francis Slone of Cincinnati, Oh.; maternal grandparents, Gabe and Doug Sanders of Weeksbury, Ky.; paternal grandmother, Marie Slone of Wayland, Ky.; and step-mother, Vickie Slone of Garrett, Ky.
Funeral services for James Robert Slone were conducted Monday, July 8, 2002, at 11 a.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, Ky., with Clergyman Brad Tackett officiating.
Burial followed in the Bradley Cemetery, Wayland, Ky., under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home.
Visitation was Saturday, at the funeral home.
Edmund Craig Hamilton
Edmund Craig Hamilton, age 23, of Pikeville, died Wednesday, July 3, 2002, at U.K. Medical Center, Lexington, Ky., following injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Born October 15, 1978, he was the son of Ricky and Kathy Syck Hamilton.
He was a graduate of Betsy Layne High School and Morehead State University. At the time of his death, he was enrolled at the University of Kentucky as a mechanical engineering student. He was a member of the Betsy Layne Freewill Baptist Church.
Besides his parents, other survivors include his grandparents, James Syck, of Stanville, Ky., and Frankie Stapleton Meade, of Tram, Ky.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, John Hamilton Jr., and Elizabeth Hamilton.
Funeral services for Edmund Craig Hamilton were conducted Saturday, July 6, 2002, at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, Ky. Minister Tracy Patton presided.
Burial was in the John Hamilton Jr., Cemetery, Tinker Fork, Teaberry, Ky., under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home.
Pallbearers were Jackie Bush, Jason Hamilton, Brent Akers, Jarrod Newsome, Darren Reynolds, and Louie Hamilton.
Visitation was at the funeral home.
Charles D. Howell
Charles D. Howell, age 74, of Lisbon Falls, Me., formerly of Harold, Ky., the husband of Novel Letson Howell, passed away on Wednesday, July 3, 2002, at the Russell Park Nursing Center, Lewiston, Me.
He was born September 12, 1927, in Harold, Ky., the son of the late Verlie Lee and Mary Ann Justice Howell. He was a retired crane operator.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one son, Steve L. Howell of Lisbon Falls, Me.; one daughter, Samantha L. Howell of Lisbon Falls, Me.; two brothers, Lowell Howell of Rosedale, Ind., and Hobert Howell of Toler Creek, Harold, Ky.; two sisters, Jewell Smallwood of Toler Creek, Harold, Ky., and Anna Mae Wade of Scottsville, Ky.; one daughter-in-law, Barbara J. Howell of Scottsville, Ky.
Funeral services for Charles D. Howell were conducted Monday, July 8, 2002, at 11 a.m., at the Lower Toler Church of Christ, Toler Creek, Harold, Ky., with Joe Meade officiating.
Burial followed in the Howell Roberts Cemetery, under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home, Martin, Ky.
Visitation was at the church.
Elvira DeRossett Tussey
Elvira DeRossett Tussey, age 85, of Lexington, Ky., formerly of Floyd County, Ky., widow of Curtis Tussey Sr., passed away, Friday, July 5, 2002, at the Lexington Country Place, Lexington, Ky.
She was born March 23, 1917, in Prestonsburg, Ky., the daughter of the late McClellan DeRossett and Nancy Lafferty DeRossett. She was a homemaker and a member of Revival Tabernacle Church, Lexington, Ky.
Survivors include four sons, Curtis (Freda) Tussey Jr., of Bradenton, Fl., Greene E. (Chris) Tussey of Lexington, Ky., Billy J. (Sharon) Tussey of Versailles, Ky., and Taulbie C. Tussey of Springfield, Oh.; three brothers, Damon DeRossett of Martin, Ky., Garner DeRossett and Toby DeRossett, both of St. Marys Oh.; two sisters, Mary Francis Mullins of St. Marys Oh., and Goldie Branham of Jackson, Mi., eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Walker DeRossett, James DeRossett, Greenwade DeRossett, Bill DeRossett, and Saul DeRossett; and one sister, Stella DeRossett.
Funeral services for Elvira DeRossett Tussey were conducted Sunday, July 7, 2002, at 2 p.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, Ky., with the clergymen, Don Crisp and Randolph Crisp, officiating.
Burial followed in the Davidson Memorial Gardens, Ivel, Ky., under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home.
Visitation was at the funeral home.

Topsy Martin Butler
Topsy Martin Butler, age 88, died Saturday, July 6, 2002, at Hazard, Ky., from an extended illness.
Born March 13, 1914, in Drift, Ky., she was the daughter of the late H.D. and Monnie Hughes Martin.
She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church, Martin, Ky., where she served as Sunday School teacher for 38 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Warren Butler.
She is survived by one daughter, Phyllis Butler Horn, of Drift, Ky.; two sisters, Norma Bone, of Louisville, Ky., and Nellma Hall, of Mason, OH; one grandson, Gregory Horn; and seven nephews and four nieces.
Other relatives preceding her in death were: Sherman Martin, Sheridan Martin, McCllelan Martin, and Opal Martin.
Funeral services for Topsy Martin Butler were conducted on Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, Ky. Ministers Greydon Howard and Russ Taylor presided.
Burial was in the Lucy Hall Cemetery, McDowell, Ky., under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home.

Rodney Leckrone

Rodney Leckrone, age 26, of Prestonsburg, died Saturday, July 6, 2002, in Johnson County, following injuries sustained from an automobile accident.
He was a 1994 graduate of Prestonsburg High School. He worked as a general laborer. He was a member of the Center Hill Baptist Church, in Loganville, Georgia.
Born May 26, 1976, in Prestonsburg, Ky., he was the son of John and Buleah Stephens Leckrone.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his grandmother, Cora Coburn Meadows, of Prestonsburg, Ky.; two brothers, Donald Leckrone and Randy Leckrone, both of Loganville, Ga.; four sisters, Pauline Prater, of Indiana, Irene Hayden, of Nashville, Tn, Sandra Osborne, of Lexington, Ky., and Alisa Ousley, of Auburndale, Fl.
Funeral services for Rodney Leckrone were conducted Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, Ky., with Rev. Clifford Austin presiding. Burial was in the Gethsemane Gardens, Prestonsburg, Ky., under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home.
Melva Sue Joseph Brown
Melva Sue Joseph Brown, age 47, of Prestonsburg, was dead on arrival at Highlands Regional Medical Center, Prestonsburg, Ky., on Thursday, July 4, 2002.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Living Word Pentecostal Church in Magoffin County, Ky.
Born June 29, 1955, in Prestonsburg, Ky., she was the daughter of Phyllis Craft Joseph, of Prestonsburg, and the late Kermit Joseph.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Columbus Ray Brown; one brother, Kermit “Bud” Joseph, of Prater, Ky.; and two sisters, Paula Gibson and Sharon Hicks, both of Prestonsburg, Ky.
Funeral services for Melva Sue Johnson were conducted Sunday, July 7, 2002, at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, Ky., with Rev. Clifford Austin presiding.
Burial was in the Mayo Cemetery, Prestonsburg, Ky., under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home.

Eugene Lawson
Eugene Lawson, age 69, of Edmonton, Ky., and formerly of Floyd County, passed away on Monday, July 8, 2002, in the T.J. Sampson Community Hospital in Glasgow, Ky., after a sudden illness.
He was born at Honaker, Ky., on October 9, 1932, the son of the late Willie and Hulda Hall Lawson.
He was a retired coal miner and a member of the U.M.W.A.
He is survived by his wife, Julia Boyd Lawson; four sons, Tex Lawson of Salyersville, Ky., Rex Lawson, Kellard Lawson and Leonard Lawson, all of Edmonton, Ky.; one daughter, Sandra Kidd of Honaker, Ky.; four brothers, General Lawson, Raymond Lawson, Ray Lawson and Kellard Lawson, all of Honaker, Ky.; two sisters, Phyllis Mullins of Printer, Ky. and Melva Lawson, of Honaker, Ky.; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, July 11, 2002, at 11:00 a.m., in the Hall Funeral Home Chapel in Martin, Ky., with Tommy Bush officiating.
Burial will follow in the Harvey Cemetery at Honaker, Ky., under the direction of Hall Funeral Home of Martin, Ky.
