He was a coal miner, and was affiliated with the Bowens Creek United Baptist Church. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, working, and spending time with his grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Anthony and Ruby Hall; two brothers, Jack Donald and Denver; one sister, Bernice.
He is survived by his wife, Fern Collett Hall of Roark, Ky.; one son, David Wayne Barrett or Roark, Ky.; one daughter, Pamela Howell of Mansfield, Ohio; two stepsons, Vernon Barrett of Lexington, Ky., and Donnie Barrett of Roark, Ky.; three step-daughters, Deanna Asher of Hoskinston, Ky., Della Barrett and Terri Smith, both of Roark, Ky.; one brother, James Hall of McDowell, Ky.; one sister, Ruby Jean Adkins of Fort Wayne, Ind.; one grandson, Austin Kyle Howell; several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were conducted with Rev. LeRoy Blackburn, Rev. Sheldon Collett and Rev. Scott Keen officiating, and burial was in the Collett Family Cemetery at Essie, Ky., under the direction of Walker Funeral Home, Hyden, Ky.
Carrie Elswick Stratton
Carrie Elswick Stratton, 89, of Betsy Layne, Ky., died Friday, June 14, 2002, at her residence.
Born in Virginia, on July 31, 1912, she was the daughter of the late Minerva Cochran Elswick and John Elswick. She was formerly employed by the Pike County Board of Education Dietary Department and Mullins High School. She was a member of the Betsy Layne Freewill Baptist Church for 52 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert L. Stratton.
Survivors include three sons, Jack D. Stratton of Benton, Ky., Gerald D. Stratton of Wishram, Wash., and Danny Stratton of Glasgow, Ky.; one daughter, Joyce Spears of Prestonsburg, Ky.; one brother, Travis Elswick of Chillicothe, Oh.; three half-brothers, John Brent Elswick of Pikeville, Larry Elswick and Clinton Elswick, both of Mich.; one half-sister, Mattie Lou Elswick of Mich.; one step-sister, Pauline Watkins of Ohio; and eight grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, June 18, 2002, at 1 p.m., at the J.W. Call Funeral Home, with Betsy Layne Freewill Baptist Church ministers officiating.
Burial was in the Davidson Memorial Gardens, Ivel, Ky., under the direction of J. W. Call Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Betsy Layne Freewill Baptist Church, or the First Baptist Church, at Mousie, Ky.
Earl Howell
Earl Howell, age 74, of Camden, went to his heavenly home on June 15, 2002, at his home, surrounded by his family.
He was born June 17, 1927, in McDowell, Ky., the son of the late Dee and Polly Howell.
On December 23, 1949, in McDowell, Ky., Earl married
Gladys Dye. He was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church of Camden.
He is survived by his wife, of 52 years, Gladys Howell, of Camden; son, Roy Howell and his wife, Cathy of Camden; daughter Sandy Gustin and her husband, Kenneth of Oxford; grandsons, Nathan Howell and Michael Gustin; sisters, Julie Elliott of Piketon, Ohio, and Olive Rose Hall of McDowell, Ky.; brothers, Estill Howell of Liberty, Ky., Claude, Dee Jr., Homer, Eugene, Olvin, and Dallas Howell, all of McDowell, Ky.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Earl Michael Howell; brothers, James, Donald, and Abe; and sisters, Hetty, Lucy, and Ruth. The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff of Vitas Hospice for all of their loving care and support.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, June 20, 2002, at the Webb Noonan Funeral Home, Ross Ave. at South “D” Street, Hamilton, Ohio, with pastor Greg Jackson officiating.
Burial will follow at Hickory Flats Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, June 19, 2002, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
Sue Cook Moore
Sue Cook Moore, 80 years of age, was born on September 15, 1921, in Knott County, Kentucky.
She was the daughter of the late Bill and Maggie Harris Cook. She departed this life following an extended illness on Saturday, June 15, 2002, at her residence at Bevinsville, Ky.
She was a homemaker and attended the Church of God of Prophecy, at Hi Hat, Ky.
She is survived by one son, Gregory Thorne of Warren, Mich.; two sisters, Veda Blankenship of Hi Hat, Ky., and Herma Lee Combs of West Carlton, Ohio; eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Rickey Hall; two brothers, Curtis Cook and Barksdell Cook; and three sisters, Norma Martin, Dixie Bates and Hammel Johnson.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, June 19, 2002, at 10 a.m., at Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, in Martin, Ky., with Don Fraley Jr. officiating.
Burial will be in the Newman Cemetery, at Hi Hat, Ky., under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home.
Visitation is at the funeral home.
Earnest Owens
Earnest Owens, age 83, of Prestonsburg, Ky., passed away Friday, May 14, 2002, at the Highlands Regional Medical Center in Prestonsburg, Ky., after an extended illness.
He was born May 27, 1919, at Prestonsburg, Ky., a son of the late John and Mattie Owens. He was a veteran, having served in the Army during W. W. II. He was a coal miner, a member of the Corn Fork Freewill Baptist Church, and a member of V.F.W. Post 5839 at Prestonsburg, Ky.
He was married
to Vada (Ratliff) Owens, who survives him.
There are six sons and three daughters, who survive: Arnold Owens of Stone, Ky., Paul Owens of Hardy, Ky., Ellery Owens and John Albert Owens, both of Prestonsburg, Ky., Donald Ray Owens of Keaton, Ky., and Terry Owens of Sebring, Fla.; Alma Sue Pulliam of Auxier, Ky., Carol Goble off Harrison Township, Mi., and Patty Ann Collins of Prestonsburg, Ky.; 23 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, June 16, 2002, at 1:30 p.m., at Burke Funeral Home, Prestonsburg, Ky., with Bro. Shane Powers and Rev. Bobby Joe Spencer officiating.
Burial will follow in the Davidson Memorial Gardens, at Ivel, Ky.
Friends may call at the Burke Funeral Home, after 6 p.m., Friday.

Estill Cole
Estill Cole, 69 years of age, of Melvin, Ky., was born on October 2, 1932, in Melvin, Ky. He was the son of the late Elbert and Sarah Caudill Cole. He passed away Monday, June 10, 2002, of an extended illness at the residence of his daughter, at Hi Hat. He was a retired carpenter. He was the husband of Fayetta Johnson Cole.
He is survived by five daughters, Greta Tackett of Hi Hat, Melody Cable of Melvin, Crystal Dowd of Elkhart, Ind., Jackquelin Caudill of Elkhart, Ind.; four sons, Rocky Cole and Warren Cole, both of Melvin, Ricky Cole of Shelbiana, Ky., and Ricky Rowe of Hi Hat; two brothers, Russell Cole of South Portsmouth, Ky., William McKinley Cole of Garrison, Ky.; four sisters, Ada Thornsbury of Auxier, Ky., Naomi Braden of Monroe, Mich., Justeen Bentley and Vada Tackett, both of Garrison, Ky.; one special niece, Sandra Kaye Johnson; one special nephew, Jaisen Douglas Collins. He has 20 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by one son, Kenny Joe Cole; two daughters, Janie Ruth Helton and Sherry Cole; three brothers, Leonard, Andy, and Londy Cole; three sisters, Arizona Tackett, Delphia Vires and Lonie Cole. There is a host of family and friends who will mourn his passing.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday, June 13, 2002, at 1:00 p.m., at the Little Nancy Old Regular Baptist Church, Hi Hat, Ky., with Old Regular Baptist ministers officiating.
Burial was in the Painter Harve Cemetery in Melvin, Ky., under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home.
Visitation was Tuesday, June 11, 2002, at 6 p.m. at the church.
Martha Mullins
Martha Mullins, 74 years of age, was born on December 30, 1927, in Bevinsville, Ky., the daughter of the late Sam Hall and Lillie Mullins Hall. She departed this life following an extended illness on Thursday, June 13, 2002, at the Highlands Regional Medical Center in Prestonsburg, Ky. She was a homemaker and a member of the Pilgrims Rest Old Regular Baptist Church at Price, Ky.
She was married
on April 25, 1946, to Melvin Mullins, who preceded her in death on August 8, 2001.
She is survived by two sons and four daughters, Billy James Mullins of Hi Hat, Ky., and John Melvin Mullins of Printer, Ky.; Daisy Mae Tackett of Hi Hat, Ky., Ruby Jewell Adams of Wayland, Ky., Elizabeth Sparkman of Hi Hat, Ky., and Shelia Ann Johnson of Beaver, Ky.; two sisters, Mary Jackson and Bertha Thomas, both of Springfield, Oh.; four brothers, Lawrence Hall, Sam Hall Jr., and McArthur Jackson, and George Jackson, all of Springfield, Oh.; 11 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren; a host of many relatives and friends who will mourn her passing.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Mary Mullins; four brothers, Leonard Hall, Jeff Hall, Joseph Jackson and Robert Hall; one grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, June 16, 2002, at 1 p.m., at the Pilgrims Rest Old Regular Baptist Church, at Price, Ky., with ministers of the Old Regular Baptist Church officiating.
Burial will be in the Mullins Family Cemetery, Hi Hat, Ky., under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, Ky.
Della “Dell” Newsome
Della “Dell” Newsome, age 90, of Melvin, Ky., widow of John B. “Johnny” Newsome, passed away Monday, June 10, 2002, at the Hazard Appalachian Regional Medical Center, Hazard, Kentucky.
She was born April 27, 1912, in Knott County, Ky., the daughter of the late John J. Amburgy and Mary Thornsbury Amburgy Page.
Survivors include three daughters, Roberta Price of Uniontown, Pa., Patricia Ann Martin of Langley, Ky., and Mary Katherine Bailey of Harold, Ky.; four step-sons, Sterlon Newsome of Cowpens, S.C., Archie Newsome of Springport, Mi., Otis Newsome and Freddie Newsome, both of Charlotte, Mi.; two stepdaughters, Vanecia Tackett of River Rouge, Mi., and Virginia Crawford of Melvin, Ky.; one sister, Delphia Vance of Bevinsville, Ky., seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, and several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Henry Hall; one son, Clyde Edward Hall; one daughter, Shirley Louise Hall.
Funeral services for Della Newsome were conducted, Thursday, June 13, 2002, at 11 a.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, Ky., with the clergymen, Ellis Holbrook, Roger Hicks, and Curtie Hall, officiating.
Burial followed in the Buckingham Cemetery, Bevins-ville, Ky., under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home, Martin, Ky.
Visitation was after 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, at the funeral home.
Pallbearers: Todd Newsome, Kevin Martin, Herbert Price, Larry Newsome, Brent Tackett, Johnny Harris, Dan Newsome, and Anthony Newsome.
Honorary: Lowell Martin, Harold Bailey, Sterlon Newsome, Archie Newsome, Otis Newsome, and Freddie Newsome.
