Benjamin W. Baker
Benjamin William Baker Jr., passed away on October 22, at Maui Memorial Medical Center, after a brief illness.
He was born on May 8, 1918, in Langley, Ky., the son of Benjamin William and Elizabeth May Baker, who was a long time librarian at Maytown High School.
He graduated with a B.A. from Berea College in 1939, and returned to Floyd County as a teacher, before serving in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945. He received a B.S. from Western University, and earned an M.B.A. from Stanford University in 1949.
He moved to Hawaii from San Francisco in 1954, where he was with the CPA firm of Haskins and Sells. He was with Young, Lambert and Pierson in Honolulu, then moved to Maui in 1956 to manage their Kahului CPA office in 1961. He was Controller for Alexander and Baldwin from 1961 to 1970, and was Executive Vice President of Finance for Maui Land and Pineapple Company, from 1970 until his retirement in 1985.
He was a member of America’s Institute of CPA’s, Caifornia and Hawaii Societies of CPA’s, and listed in Men and Women of Hawaii. He served as Trustee of Hawaii Tax Foundation for eight years, and served on the Board of Directors of Kapalua Resort. He was a member of Maui Country Club, and was a Kentucky Colonel.
He is survived by his wife, Libby, of Kihei, Maui; daughter, Dr. Sherry Baker-Dahman (John) of Cincinnati; and son, Benjamin William Baker III (Michele) of Makawao, Maui.
A memorial celebration of his life will be held on Maui at a future date. Also, a plaque in his memory will be placed at the May Cemetery at Langley, Ky., next to his parents.

Shirlene Spears
Shirlene Spears, of Bevins-ville, Ky., died Sunday, November 4, 2001.
Born on August 29, 1941, in Floyd County, she was the daughter of the late Elmer and Laura Johnson Spears. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include one brother, Russell Spears of Kenderville, Ind.; four sisters, Aillene Burke and Barbra Lackey, both of Bevinsville, Ky., Melene Dye of Tiro Ohio, and Mildred Click of Noble, Ok.; and one niece, Misti Johnson of Bevinsville.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Buster Spears and Hobert Spears; one sister, Anna Jean Johnson.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, November 7, 2001, at 10 a.m., at the Little Rock Old Regular Baptist Church, Bevinsville, Ky., with Old Regular Baptist ministers officiating.
Burial will be in the Martin Johnson Cemetery at Bevinsville, Ky., under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, Ky.
Visitaton will be at the Little Rock Old Regular Baptist Church, Bevinsville, Ky.

Sanford S. Ratliff
Sanford S. Ratliff, 91, of Albion, Mich., died Monday, October 29, 2001, at Trillium Hospital in Albion.
He was born October 1, 1910, in Floyd County, Ky., the son of James and Polly (Sutton) Ratliff.
He married Sadie Slusher in May of 1934; she preceded him in death in 1993. Sanford was a coal miner for 35 years, moving to Michigan in 1962. He also worked for Pickens Plating for seven years. He was a member of the Southern United Baptist Church and United Mine Workers of America. He was an avid hunter, enjoyed walking, gardening and his grandchildren.
Survivors include five daughters, Norma Jean and Eugene Collins of Albion, Mich., Magdalene and Pondale Petroff of Marshall, Mich., Jody and Virgil Owens of Homer, Mich., Dorothy and Roger Quada of Marshall, Mich., Melba and Gilbert Jackson of Cleveland, Ohio; one son, David and Pam Ratliff of Homer, Mich.; three sisters, Cora Slone of Prestonsburg, Ky., Dottie Neeley of Hueysville, Ky., Maudie Hoover of Hippo, Ky.; one brother, Joe Ratliff of Hueysville, Ky.; 21 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Frank, and 11 brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, November 2, 2001, 1 p.m., at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home, 811 Finley Drive, Albion, with pastors Garvel Owens and Jim Snyder officiating.
Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Homer.
Visitation was Thursday, from 6-8 p.m., with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m.
Memorials are suggested to R.B.M. Ministries.

Jay Salisbury
Jay Salisbury, age 79, of Hunter, Ky., husband of the late Geneva Lykins Salisbury, passed away Wednesday, October 31, 2001, at his residence.
He was born August 14, 1922, in Floyd County, Ky., the son of the late Link Salisbury and Mae Bentley Salisbury. He was a self-employed farmer and an U.S. Army, World War II veteran.
Survivors include one sister, Gertrude Boggs of Huntington, West Virginia.
Funeral services for Jay Salisbury will be conducted Saturday, November 3, 2001, at noon, at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, Ky., with Regular Baptist ministers officiating.
Burial will follow in the Salisbury Family Cemetery, Hunter Ky., under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home, Martin, Ky.
Visitation is at the funeral home.

Loma Warrix DeRossett
Loma Warrix DeRossett, 91, of the Right Fork of Bull Creek, Prestonsburg, Ky., died Tuesday, October 30, 2001.
Born on November 13, 1909, at Water Gap, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Solomon Warrix and Caroline McGuire Warrix. She was a homemaker and mother.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alex DeRossett.
Survivors include one son, Gerald DeRossett of Bull Creek, Prestonsburg, whose wife, Katie DeRossett is deceased; one daughter, Clara Lucille Garrett, Bull Creek, Prestonsburg, Ky., (husband Doug), daughter-in-law, Cleo DeRossett of Prestonsburg; six grandchildren, Gerald DeRossett, John DeRossett, (wife Linda) Leslie Ousley, (husband, Rodney), James DeRossett, Caroline Patrick, (husband Mike), and Tammy DeRossett; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, John Alex DeRossett, Bryant DeRossett; four brothers, W.A. Warrix, Adam Warrix, James Warrix, John Warrix; three sisters, Daisy Warrix, Julia Warrix, and Mousie Warrix.
Funeral services will be conducted (today) Friday, November 2, 2001, at 1 p.m., at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, Ky., with Clergymen Bobby Joe Spencer, Arnold Turner Jr. and Bill Campbell officiating.
Burial will be in the Alex DeRossett Cemetery, Bull Creek, Prestonsburg, Ky., under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home.
Visitation is at the funeral home.
Pallbearers are Rodney Ousley, James DeRossett, John DeRossett, Gerald DeRossett, Zach Ousley, Mike Patrick, Jimmy J. DeRossett, Josh Hyden, Seth Hyden, John P. Anderson, and Clyde Johnson.

Lillie Mae Boyd
Lillie Mae Boyd, age 82, of Roseville, Mi., formerly of Banner, Ky., widow of Orville Boyd, passed away Wednesday, September 26, 2001, at the Medilodge Nursing Home, Sterling Heights, Mich.
She was born December 18, 1918, in Banner, Ky., the daughter of the late Charlie Hall and Alice Hall. She was a homemaker and a member of the Little Salem Regular Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, French Boyd of Centerline, Mi.; two daughters, Arbedella Faber of Roseville, Mi., Carol Shovan of East Pointe, Mi.; one brother, Cecil Bert Hall of Ivel, Ky., five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Lillie Mae Boyd were conducted Saturday, September 29, 2001, at 10:00 a.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, Ky., with the Regular Baptist ministers officiating.
Burial followed in the Davidson Memorial Gardens, Ivel, Ky., under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home, Martin, Ky.
Visitation was at the funeral home.
Pallbearers: David Faber, Richard Faber, Jamie Shovan, Bill Carroll, Faith Faber, and Jerri Faber.

Etta Elizabeth Lester Martin
Etta Elizabeth Lester Martin, 61, of North Manchester, In., formerly of Martin, passed away Friday, September 28, 2001, in the Parkview Memorial Hospital, Fort Wayne, In., following a brief illness.
She was born December 25, 1939, the daughter of the late Hershel and Hazel D. Lester. She was a member of the Women of the Moose Society, and Ladies Auxiliary, Fraternal Order of Eagles.
Survivors include one son, Mark Edwin Martin of Pikeville, Ky.; one daughter, Carol Ann Bently of Wayland, Ky.; three brothers, Arnold Ray Lester of Dayton, Oh., Ottie Lester of Springfield, Oh., and Cyde DeRossett of Pikeville, Ky.; two sisters, Brenda Shelton of Martin, Ky., and Bobbie Sue Fairchild of Lexington, Ky.; and three grandchildren, Charla Ann Goble, Ashley Gayle Slone, and Jeremy D. Slone.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Malissa Gayle Slone.
Funeral services for Mrs. Martin were conducted on Monday, October 1, 2001, at 1:00 p.m., in the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, with Buddy Jones officiating.
Burial was in the Davidson Memorial Gardens at Ivel, Ky.
Visitation was at the funeral home.
Pallbearers: Shawn Shelton, Justin Martin, Butch Bentley, Matt Goble, Mark Martin, and Charlie L. Martin.
