Bertha Stephens Ousley, 84, of Prestonsburg, died Sunday, November 16, 2003.
Born January 3, 1919, in Floyd County, she was the daughter of the late Rev. Alex and Emma Johnson Stephens. She was a homemaker, and a member of the West Prestonsburg United Baptist Church for 55 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Ousley, to whom she was married
for 63 years.
Survivors include three sons, Robert Alec Ousley and Russell Ousley, both of Prestonsburg, and William Ousley of Indianapolis, Indiana; two daughters, Ruby Shepherd of Prestonsburg, and Lula Belle Morrison of Popular Bluff, Missouri; two sisters, Dora Bradley of Stockbridge, Michigan, and Nola Stumbo of Prestonsburg; 16 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Edna Grace Ousley; three brothers, Henry Stephens, William Stephens and Joe Stephens; three sisters, Betty Hunter, Julie Hunter, and Mary Bradley; two grandsons, and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, November 19, at 11 a.m., at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, with Don Neeley, and other United Baptist ministers, officiating.
Burial will be in the Ousley Cemetery, Spurlock, Prestonsburg, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home.
Visitation is at the funeral home.
Warren G. Risner
Warren G. Risner, 81, of Bypro, died Friday, November 14, 2003, at Highlands Regional Medical Center.
Born November 29, 1921, in Martin, he was the son of the late Tom and Kate Hunter Risner. He was a retired merchant, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and a World War II veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Pratt Risner.
Other survivors include his daughters and son-in-laws, Debbie and Johnny Belcher of Prestonsburg, Delona and John Roth of Amherst, Massachusetts, Denise and Keith Wilson of Winchester; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Martin Risner; and two half-brothers, Woodrow Taylor and Macfarland Taylor.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday, November 16, at 1:30 p.m., at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Martin, with Bishop Ken Carrier officiating.
Burial was in the Davidson Memorial Gardens, at Ivel, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin.
Visitation was at the funeral home.
Walk L. Tackett
Walk L. Tackett, 64, of Minnie, died Saturday, November 15, 2003, at his residence.
Born July 10, 1939, in McDowell, he was the son of the late Marion and Minnie Vance Tackett. He was a retired conductor for CSX, and a United States Army veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy Lee Weigle Tackett.
Other survivors include two sons, Craig Tackett of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Calvin Tackett of McDowell; two daughters, Chrissy Queen of Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Minnie Tackett of Minnie; two brothers, Roy Tackett of Morehead, and Wade Tackett of Printer; six sisters, Irene Tackett of Printer, Helen Hall of McDowell, Columbia Mullins of McDowell, Gail Gayheart of Hillsborough, Verlie Mae Tackett of Printer, and Mary Patton of Glendale, Arizona; and seven grandchildren, Whitney, Jamie, Jesse, Cody, Alyssa, Gabriel and Brittany.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Roe Tackett, Junior Tackett, Alan Tackett, Billy Tackett and Timmy Tackett.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, November 18, at 1 p.m., at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, with Nathan Lafferty officiating.
Entombment will be in the Gethsemane Gardens, Prestonsburg, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home.
Visitation was at the funeral home.
Oliver (Bud) Spurlock
Oliver (Bud) Spurlock, of Oak Hill, Ohio, passed away, Saturday, November 15, 2003, at Holzer Hospital in Gallipolis, Ohio.
Oliver was a farmer in the Oak Hill area since 1954, and was a bus driver for the Oak Hill Local Schools for 23 years. He retired from the school system in 1985. Prior to moving to Oak Hill, he was a coal miner in Floyd County, for 17 years.
He was born August 14, 1920, in Printer, the son of Randolph and Dolly Dingus Spurlock.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Edith Hamilton Spurlock.
Other survivors include three sons, Jack and (Carol) Spurlock of New Carlisle, Ohio, Joe and (Susan) Spurlock of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Bob and (Jannie) Spurlock of Oak Hill, Ohio; a daughter-in-law, Karen Spurlock of Milford Center, Ohio; and a sister-in-law, Amalee Spurlock of Printer; ten grandchildren, and twenty-two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Franklin Beriah; two brothers, Ottis and (Lucretia) Spurlock, and John Spurlock; and one sister, Elizabeth Spurlock Martin, and her husband, Luther Martin.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, November 18, at 1 p.m., at the Kuhner-Lewis Funeral Home, Oak Hill, Ohio, with Rev. Elza Green and Carson Hunt officiating..
Burial was in the Hill Cemetery.
Visitation was at the funeral home.
Phinas (Piney) Dye Jr.
Phinas (Piney) Dye Jr., 36, of McDowell, died Friday, November 7, 2003, at the McDowell Appalachian Regional Hospital emergency room.
Born September 18, 1967, in LaGrange, Indiana, he was the son of Phinas Dye Sr., of Sandy Hook, and the late Maggie Parker Dye. He was a disabled coal miner.
He is survived by his wife, Lisa Johnson Dye.
Other survivors include one son, Justin Dye of Warsaw, Indiana; three daughters, Nancy Glenna Faithe Dye of McDowell, Tiffany Arms of Prestonsburg and Charlie Sue Ousley of Martin; one step-son, Kevin Litton of McDowell; one brother, Cliff Dye of McDowell; and four sisters, Cynthia Gayheart of McDowell, Gina Lisa Johnson of Melvin, Margarita Bowman of Sandy Hook and Darlena Johnson of Mayking.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Tierra Hope Dye.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, November 9, at 1 p.m., at the Pilgrims Rest Old Regular Baptist Church, at Price, with Old Regular Baptist ministers officiating.
Burial will be in the Dye Cemetery, at Spewing Camp, in Orkney, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin.
Visitation is at the church.
Alice Virginia Kendrick
Alice Virginia Kendrick, 61, of Upper Chloe, Pikeville, died Thursday, November 6, 2003, at the Mt. View Health Care Center, Elkhorn City.
Born August 11, 1942, in Floyd County, she was the daughter of the late Jessie Stevens and Della Jane King Stevens. She was a homemaker, and a member of the Free Will Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Jessie Kendrick.
Other survivors include one brother, Leonard Stevens of Harold; four sisters, Maggie Howell, Georgia Stevens and Lizzie McKinney, all of Harold, and Mary Jane Potter of Ohio.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, November 9, at 11 a.m., at the Toler Creek Free Will Baptist Church, with Joe Slone and Jamie Biliter officiating.
Burial will be in the Justice Cemetery, Toler Creek, Floyd County.
Visitation, at the Justice Funeral Home, with nightly services being held Friday and Saturday.
Jewel Stephens
Jewel Stephens, 61, of Taylorsville, died Monday, November 3, 2003, at Valleyview Health Care Center in Taylorsville.
She was the former Jewel Rice, a native of Martin, and a former employee of General Electric, and the E.P.I. Corporation.
She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Paul M. Stephens.
Other survivors include one son, Paul Michael Stephens (Jennifer) of Louisville; one sister, Delores Smith of Prestonsburg; two grandchildren, Landen Alexander Stephens, and Skyler Alexis Pierce.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m., Wednesday, November 5, at McFarland-Troutman-Profitt Funeral Home, with burial in Highland Memory Gardens.
Visitation was at the funeral home.

Myrene (Rene) Hershberger Castle
Myrene (Rene) Hershberger Castle, 74, of Pres-tonsburg, died Thurs-day, November 6, 2003, at her residence.
Born October 26, 1929, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Walter K. Krieger and Gladys Hart Krieger. She was a salesperson for Earl Castle Jewelry for 25 years. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Prestonsburg, and a member of Eastern Star/Adah Chapter No. 24, Prestonsburg.
She is survived by her husband, Earl Castle.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by one son, Earl Michael Castle (Mary N.) of Prestonsburg; one daughter, Patricia C. Setser (Paul R.) of Prestonsburg; two grandsons, Earl Michael Castle II and Grant Nunnery Castle; one sister, Patricia Krieger of South Daytona, Florida.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, November 8, at 11 a.m., at the Carter Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. George Love officiating.
Interment will be in the Hall Cemetery (Davis Branch), Paintsville.
Visitation is Friday, 4 p.m., until 9 p.m.
