William Floyd “Tumbleweed” Skaggs Jr., age 51, of Martin, passed away, Tuesday, September 30, 2003, at his residence.
He was born April 11, 1952, in Martin, the son of Rosemary Kidd Gross, and the late William Floyd Skaggs.
Survivors include his mother, Ann Griffith of Martin; one brother, Raymond Griffith Jr., of Jacksonville, Florida, and three sisters, Janice Wright and Tommie Robinson, both of Martin, and Chris Stumbo of McDowell.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, October 3, at 1 p.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, at Martin, with Clergymen Bruce Coleman and Gary Mitchell officiating.
Burial will follow in the Davidson Memorial Gardens, at Ivel, under the professional care of Hall Funeral Home, Martin.
Darcus Key
Darcus Key, age 81, of Allen, widow of Roy Key, passed away, Thursday, October 2, 2003, at the residence of Sue Harn.
She was born December 28, 1921, in Hippo, the daughter of the late Tommy Ousley and Lucy Allen Ousley. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church, at Allen.
Survivors include one son, Jimmy Ray Key of Allen; two nieces, Sue Harn and Patty Armour; two grandchildren, Zak Tisdale Key and Kelly Ray Key, and one great-grandchild, J.D. Armour.
Funeral services for Darcus Key will be conducted Sunday, October 5, at 2 p.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, with Clergymen Arnold Turner Jr., and Mark Tackett officiating.
Burial will follow in the Hicks Cemetery, at Hippo, under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home.
Visitation is after 6 p.m., Friday, at the funeral home.
Pallbearers: Lee Boyd, Ross Boyd, Stacy Marshall, David Holbrook, Brandon Kinzer, Brent Turner and Dustin Porter.

Lee Ester Osborne
Lee Ester Osborne, 81, of Hampton, Virginia, formerly of Buckingham, died Tuesday, September 30, at Sentara Care Plex Hospital in Hampton, Virginia.
Born July 28, 1922, at Wheelwright, she was the daughter of the late Hargis and Lorraine Noble Clemons. She was a homemaker and attended Victory Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Osborne.
Survivors include two sons, Danny Osborne of Hampton, Virginia, and Anthony Osborne of Edgewood; a daughter, Madelene Weinberger of Waldorf, Maryland; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Pearl Clemons and Kelly Clemons; and two sisters, Margaret Coston and Dora Lucas.
Graveside services will be conducted Saturday, October 4, at 11 a.m., at Buckingham Cemetery, with Lee Weinberger officiating.
Burial will be in the Buckingham Cemetery at Bevinsville, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin.
Mary Ethel Harless
Mary Ethel Harless, age 93, of Calf Creek, died Tuesday, September 16, 2003, at the Prestonsburg Health Care Center.
Born August 25, 1910, at Edgar, Ky., she was the daughter of the late William Jack Lafferty and Eva Fraley Lafferty. She was the widow of Ira Harless.
She was a seamstress, homemaker, and a member of the Calf Creek Fellowship Baptist Church. She had six sons, whom, without the help of any welfare agency, she helped send through school by sewing for people.
Survivors include six sons, Elmer Harless, Elzie Winston Harless, and Oakey C. Harless all of Prestonsburg, William Truman Harless of Ypsilanti, Michigan, James Harless of Marion, Ohio, and Winfred Harless of Plymouth, Michigan; 14 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husbanad and parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter-in-law, Anna Belle Harless; six brothers, Homer Lafferty, William Thomas Lafferty, Winfred Lafferty, Lacey Lafferty, Floyd Lafferty and Billy Lafferty; and seven sisters, Beulah Hatfield, Martha Diamond, Barbara Smith, Josephine Scalf, Ruby Neil, Garnet Lafferty and Pearl Lafferty.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, September 20, at 1:00 p.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin. Clergymen Clinton “Buddy” Jones and Manford Fannin officiated.
Burial was in the Harless Family Cemetery at Calf Creek, under the professional care of Hall Funeral Home.
Sylvester V. Younce
Sylvester V. Younce, 97, of East Point, died Sunday, September 28, 2003, at Highlands Regional Medical Center, Prestonsburg.
Born May 25, 1906, in Oneida, Tennessee, he was the son of the late William Riley and Ella Phillips Younce. He was a retired gas company employee; a member of the Third Avenue Freewill Baptist Church, where he was a deacon for 50 some years; a Kentucky Colonel; a member of Zebulon Masonic Lodge, 273, in Prestonsburg, and a veteran of World War I, serving in the Army and Navy.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Rebecca Garrett Younce.
Survivors include his sons and daughters-in-law, Cledith (wife, Elsie) Younce of Greenville, Tennessee, Sylvester Jr., (wife, Kathy) Younce of Silver Springs, Florida, Delmon (wife, Elsie) Younce of Las Vegas, Nevada, Wendell Younce of Springfield, Virginia, Gennis Younce of East Point; daughters and sons-in-law, Vonda (husband, Bill) Ladd of Petersburg, Michigan, Dottie Hastings of East Point, Trena (husband, Woody) Ratliff, of East Point; 14 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Luther Younce, Zelmer Younce, Holbrook Younce, John Younce, and Bergan Younce; and four sisters, Anna Mae Younce, Elsie Pennington, Dorothy Baldridge, and Emma Reed.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, October 1, at 1 p.m., at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, with Manford Fannin, Bill Campbell, and Cledith Younce officiating.
Burial will be in the Davidson Memorial Gardens, at Ivel, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home.
Visitation is at the funeral home, and services were held Tuesday evening.

Stallard “Pee Wee” Williams
Stallard “Pee Wee” Williams, age 75, of New London, Ohio, died Monday morning, September 29, 2003, at his home.
He was born February 25, 1928, in Honaker, the son of the late Silas and Cassie (Moore) Williams. He had worked for several years in the coal mines of Kentucky, at the Walbridge Railroad Roundhouse in Toledo, at Bigelow Tile Co. in New London for 23 years, at Ohio Body Manufacturing in New London, and for Con Rail Railrod. He was a member of the Old Regular Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Edna Mae (Hamilton) Williams. They were married
September 14, 1946.
Other survivors include four daughters and sons-in-law, Helen and Graeme Frith, Sandy and Wayne Pylant, Debby and Mike Collins, and Carol and Ritchie Leibolt, all of New London; a son, Ted Williams of New London; five brothers, Delmar Williams of Kentucky, Allen Williams and Dingus Williams, both of Shelby, Howard Williams of New London and Amos Williams of Newark, Ohio; two sisters, Vern Ratliff of Kentucky and Juanita Deppen of New London; 17 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may call beginning at 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, with evening services being held at 6:30 p.m., until the time of the funeral service at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, at the Little Rebecca Church, 4982 Henry Rd., Plymouth, Ohio. Elders Larry Newsome and Kennis Robinson will be officiating.
Burial will follow at Ashland County Memorial Park, under the direction of Eastman Funeral Home, 200 West Main St., New London.

Opal Bentley
Opal Bentley, 73, of McDowell, died Sunday, September 28, 2003, at the Hazard Appalachian Regional Medical Center.
Born August 18, 1929, in Halo, she was the daughter of the late Wiley and Flotilla Childers Burke. She was a homemaker, and a member of the First Baptist Church at McDowell.
She is survived by her husband, Estill Bentley.
Other survivors include sons, Roger Bentley of McClok, Nebraska, Estill Bentley Jr., of McDowell, and Lynn Bentley of Louisa; daughter, Brenda Newsom of Virgie; brother, Boone Burke of Catlettsburg; sisters, Missouri Bentley of Halo, Oma Dawson of Price; and nine grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Norman Bentley; eight brothers, Olden, Urice, Ted, Howard, Wiley Jr., Woodrow, Roy, and Shirley; and one sister, Tennessee.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, September 30, at 11 a.m., at the McDowell First Baptist Church, with ministers of the First Baptist Church officiating.
Burial was in the Lucy Hall Cemetery, McDowell, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin.
Visitation was at the church, with services being held nightly.
Vivian R. Scutchfield
Vivian R. Scutchfield, age 65, of Prestonsburg, widow of William Scutchfield, passed away, Sunday, September 28, 2003, at her residence.
She was born September 29, 1938, in Knott County, the daughter of the late Burcon Thacker and Oliver Draughn Thacker. She was a homemaker and a member of the Community Methodist Church, Prestonsburg.
Survivors include one daughter, Deborah Kaye Scutchfield of Prestonsburg; two brothers, Rudy Thacker of Nashville, Tennessee, and Bristol Thacker of Louisville; and one sister, Shelby J. Agney of Vermilion, Ohio.
Funeral services for Vivian R. Scutchfield will be conducted Thursday, October 2, 2003, at 11 a.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, at Martin, with Clergymen Randy Osborne and Steve Pescosolido officiating.
Burial will follow in the Scutchfield Family Cemetery, Prestonsburg, under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home.
Visitation is after 1 p.m., Wednesday, at the funeral home.
