Robert Harris, 87, of Melvin, died Friday, September 26, 2003, at the McDowell Appalachian Regional Hospital.
Born February 7, 1916, in Hollybush, he was the son of the late Ceberry and Elvira Gibson Harris. He was a retired coal miner, a Kentucky Colonel, and a member of the Joppa Old Regular Baptist Church at Melvin.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Gibson Harris.
Survivors include two sons, Ballard Harris (Glenda) of Lenoir, North Carolina; and Robert Kay Harris (Teresa) of Drift; six daughters, Reva Anderson (Reuben) of Shelby Gap, Eloise Ward of Buckingham, Phyllis Slone (Tommy), Irene Faye Moore (Claude), Darlene Harris and Charlene Caudill (Glennis), all of Melvin, 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, and wife, he was preceded in death by two daughters, Imogene and Emogene Harris; four brothers, Isadore, Hasadore, Willie and Tommy; four sisters, Kathleen, Anna, Evetta and Tinie; three grandchildren, Walter Robert, June Irene and Clifford Neil; and two sons-in-law, Bill Ward and Clifford Johnson.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, September 30, at noon, at the Joppa Old Regular Baptist Church at Melvin, with Old Regular Baptist ministers officiating.
Burial was in the Harris Family Cemetery at Melvin, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin.
Visitation was at the church.
Bryan R. Ousley
Bryan R. Ousley, 33, of Prestonsburg, died Sunday, September 28, 2003, at his residence, following a brief illness.
Born June 22, 1970, in Ypsilanti, Michigan, he was the son of Russell and Wanda Jo Lafferty Ousley of Prestonsburg. He was a parts salesman for Advance Auto Parts in Salyersville.
Survivors include one son, Bryan Lee Ousley of Prestonsburg; one step-daughter, Lisa Setser of Auxier; one brother, Russell Randy Ousley (wife, Diana), of Atlanta, Georgia; and a sister, Melissa Joe Patton (husband, Steve) of Richmond; his paternal grandmother, Bertha Ousley of Prestonsburg; two nieces, Miranda Ousley and Courtney Patton; and a nephew, Robert Sexton.
He was preceded in death by a brother, William Marcus Ousley.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, October 1, at 11 a.m., at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, in Martin, with Robert Ousley officiating.
Burial will be in the Ousley Cemetery, at Prestonsburg, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home.
Visitation is at the funeral home.
Randy Yates
Randy Yates, age 54, of Lorain, Ohio, died Thursday night, September 25, 2003, at his brother’s home in Loudonville, after a 6-month illness.
He was born February 7, 1949, in Prestonsburg. He lived in New London from 1959 to 1967, when he moved to the Lorain area.
He was a 1967 graduate of New London High School. He had served in the U.S. Navy. He worked for the City of Lorain and was a member of Church on the North Coast in Lorain, and was a member of the Amherst Eagles. He loved music and traveling.
He is survived by his wife, of eight years, Terah (Morrow) Yates; a daughter, Rachel and Jason Orgen of Vermilion; two sons, Nate and Lydia Yates of Amherst and Ryan Yates at home; two sisters, Marla and Don Helms, and Tammy Yates all of Ashland; a brother, Lloyd and JoAnne Yates of Loudonville; his mother, Estelle Schenk of Ashland; three grandchildren; two nieces and three nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Edward Yates, and his step-father, Robert Schenk.
Funeral services were held 11:00 a.m., Monday, September 29, at the Eastman Funeral Home, 200 West Main St., New London, with Pastor Louis Kayatin of Church on the North Coast officiating.
Visitation was at the funeral home.
Memorials if desired may be made to a favorite charity.
Dinah Smiley
Dinah Smiley, age 74, of Attica, Michigan, formerly of Prestonsburg, wife of Ermon Smiley, passed away, Tuesday, September 16, 2003, at Mount Clemens General Hospital, Mt. Clemens, Michigan.
She was born September 15, 1929, in Prestonsburg, the daughter of the late Andy Boyd and Lizzie Akers Boyd. She was a manufacturing inspector for Interstate Manufacturing Company, Romeo, Michigan, and was a member of the Little Ida Old Regular Baptist Church, Ecorse, Michigan.
In addition to her husband of 57 years, she is survived by three sons, Ranold Smiley (Francis) of Utica, Michigan, Dean Smiley (Vanessa) of Lapeer, Michigan, and Ernie Smiley (Brenda) of Washington Township, Michigan; two daughters, Helen Willis (Ron) of Imlay City, Michigan; and Carolyn Sochor of Clinton Township, Michigan; 14 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Kessie Boyd and Kellie Boyd.
Funeral services for Dinah Smiley were conducted Saturday, September 20, at 11 a.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, with Old Regular Baptist ministers officiating.
Burial was in the Akers Cemetery, at Dana, under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home.
Pallbearers: Micheal Willis, Mark Willis, Bryan Maddox, Paul Maddox, Dan Smiley, Joe Willis, Jeff Smiley, and Rick Maddox.
Bobby Mulkey
Bobby Mulkey, 74, of Homer, Michigan, passed away Thursday, September 18, 2003, at his home.
He was born December 2, 1928, in Floyd County, the son of the late Lee and Elizabeth May (Crum) Mulkey.
He was twice married, first to Marie Cline Mulkey, who preceded him in death. On June 5, 1993, he married
Betty Reynolds who survives.
For 30 years he was a pattern die maker for Hayes Albion. Bobby was a member of Riverside Baptist Church in Homer, and he enjoyed his church, gardening, building things, and his family.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four daughters, Verna and John Day, and Eva Mae and David Webb, all of Concord, Joan Holton and Janice Powers, both of Charlotte; three sons, Bobby Gene and Donna Mulkey, and Therman and Ruthann Crider, all of Concord; and Lois and Virginia Crider of Albion; two sisters; two brothers; 16 grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and first wife, he was preceded in death by four brothers.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, September 22, at 1 p.m., at the Riverside Baptist Church in Homer, with Reverend Jimmy Collins officiating.
Interment followed in Maple Grove Cemetery in Concord.
Visitation was at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home, 811 Finley Drive, Albion.

Brandon J. (B.J.) Bryant
Brandon J. (B.J.) Bryant, 21, of Wheelwright, died Sunday, September 21, 2003, following an auto accident on Ky. Rt. 466, at Melvin.
Born December 21, 1981, in Pikeville, he was the son of Jessie and Margaret Tackett Bryant of Wheelwright. He was a 2001 graduate of South Floyd High School, and a Masonry worker for Sandy Valley Masonry.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by one brother, Steven Collins of Wheelwright; one sister and brother-in-law, Stacy and Marty Little of Melvin; maternal grandmother, Bulah Boggs Tackett of Ashtabula, Ohio; three nieces, Kaitlan, Kelsie and Laken; nine aunts; five uncles, and several cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Luther Boggs, and paternal grandparents, Willie and Rose Johnson Bryant.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, September 24, at 1 p.m., at the Joppa Old Regular Baptist Church at Melvin, with Old Regular Baptist ministers officiating.
Burial will be in the Hall-Little Cemetery at Wheelwright, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin.
Visitation is at the church.

Susie Miller
Susie Miller, 70, of Warsaw, Indiana, died Saturday, September 20, 2003, at Kosciusko Community Hospital emergency room, Warsaw, Indiana.
Born October 29, 1932, in Blue River, she was the daughter of the late Jim Henry Hughes and Ida (Marcellett) Hughes. She was a homemaker, and had been a resident of Kosciusko County, Indiana, since July 1955. She was a member of the Pentecostal Lighthouse Church, Warsaw, Indiana. She died surrounded by her family and friends.
She was married
June 22, 1955, to Green Miller, who survives.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include one son, Ronald Miller of Warsaw, Indiana; one daughter, Mary Miller of Warsaw, Indiana; three grandchildren; two sisters, Josephine Blackburn of Warsaw, Indiana, and Osie Holbrook of Salyersville; two brothers, Malcom Hughes of Warsaw, Indiana and Bill Hughes of Baltimore, Maryland.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, two sisters and two brothers.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, September 24, at 10 a.m., at the Pentecostal Lighthouse Church, 125 Fawley Street, Warsaw, Indiana, with Reverend Glen Hughes and Reverend Robie Whitaker officiating.
Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw, Indiana.
Visitation is at Titus Funeral Home, Warsaw, Indiana.

Dr. Walker Porter Mayo Jr.
Dr. Walker Porter Mayo, Jr., a native of Prestonsburg, Kentucky, attended Eastern Kentucky University and Vanderbilt University and graduated from the University of Louisville Medical School in 1946. He served in the U.S. Navy, and after receiving the M.S. degree in physiology from the University of Michigan School of Medicine, where he did respiratory physiology research, he took a general surgery residency in the V.A, Hospital, in Louisville and later a thoracic surgery residency at the University of Michigan. His surgery practice in Lexington, Kentucky extended from 1954 to 1984. Dr. Mayo was the first thoracic surgeon to practice in Lexington.
After his retirement from practice, he pursued a second career and received a Ph.D. degree in history from the University of Kentucky. He has served as Clinical Processor of Surgery and Director of the Problem-Based-Learning Program in the Department of Surgery at UK Medical Center and Professor Emeritus, College of Medicine, University of Kentucky. A Founding Member of both the Southern Thoracic Surgical Society and the Society of Thoracic Surgery, he has co-authored eighty scientific publications. In recent years, Dr. Mayo has devoted his writing to the history of medicine. He is the author of Medicine in the Athens of the West.
He is survived by his wife of fifty-one years, Helen Pat Mayo; four children, Camille Mayo (Gordon) Dunn, Charlotte, NC, Walker Porter Mayo, III, Lexington, Patrice Mayo (Sandy) Ligon, Franklin, TN, and Dr. Lionel Prevost (Karen) Mayo, Richmond, KY; one grandchildren, Chloe Mayo Ligon, Franklin, TN.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Louis Harkey Mayo and Dick Erwin Mayo.
Services will be 10 AM Thursday at W.R. Milward Mortuary-Broadway, conducted by Dr. Billy Ray Jennings. A committal service will follow at 2:30 PM Thursday at the Mayo Family Cemetery, Prestonsburg, KY. Visitation will be 4-7 PM Wednesday.
