Minnie Lawson Newman, age 71, of Hi Hat, wife of Orby Newman, passed away, Wednesday, August 27, 2003, at McDowell Appalachian Regional Hospital, McDowell.
She was born February 19, 1932, in Orkney, the daughter of the late Henry “Hob” Lawson and Julia Mae Gearheart Lawson. She was a homemaker and member of the Church of God of Prophecy, Hi Hat.
She is survived by her husband; three sons, Cecil Ray (Leann) Newman, Roy Douglas (Robin) Newman, Troy Lee (Debbie) Newman, all of River Rouge, Michigan; four daughters, Freda Mae (Ted) Burke and Lois Bentley Newman, both of Hi Hat, Betty Ann (Ray) Johnson of Taylor, Michigan, Tammy Lynn (Robert) Elliott of Alilene, Texas; three sisters, Inis Hall of Topmost, Ruby Wells of Westerville, Ohio, Kathryn Gardner of Columbus, Ohio; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Minnie Lawson Newman will be conducted Saturday, August 30, 2003, at 1 p.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, with the Clergyman Glenn Hayes officiating.
Burial will follow in the James Newman Cemetery, at Hi Hat, under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home.
Visitation is at the funeral home.

Anna Sue Stumbo
Anna Sue Stumbo, age 87, of McDowell, widow of Lloyd Stumbo, passed away, Monday, August 25, 2003, at the Hazard Appalachian Regional Medical Center.
She was born May 1, 1916, in Orkney, the daughter of the late J.C. Moore and Flossie Martin Moore. She was a retired Floyd County Supervisor of Elementary Education. She was a member of the Floyd County Retirement Association, Floyd County Conservation Commission, a former board member of McDowell Appalachian Regional Hospital, a former member of the Drift Womens Club, a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, the Alice Lloyd Alumni Association, and an Eastern Kentucky University alumni.
Survivors include one brother, Joe C. Moore of Drift; three sisters, Lorraine Sundermeyer of Portland, Maine, Pauline Dobyns of Fairborn, Ohio, and Nesba Sumner of Louisville; one nephew, Kenny Joe Moore of Drift; three nieces, Bobbie Lynn Moore of Drift, Pam Moore of Fairborn, Ohio, and Paula Franklin of Louisville.
In addition to her husband, and parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, John R. Moore; one sister, Delphia Newman; three nephews, Frenchy Moore, Gerald Moore, and Jody Sundermeyer.
Funeral services for Anna Sue Stumbo will be conducted Wednesday, August 27, at 11 a.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, with Clergyman Vernon Rose, and other Regular Baptist ministers, officiating.
Burial will follow in the Moore Family Cemetery, at Price, under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home.
Viola May Cooley DeRossett
Viola May Cooley DeRossett, age 85, of Prestonsburg, passed away, Sunday, August 24, 2003, at Highlands Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.
She was born March 15, 1918, at Bonanza, a daughter of the late Sherman C. and Martha L. Music May. She was a charter member of the Community Methodist Church of Prestonsburg.
She was twice married, first to Otis Cooley, and later to Jack DeRossett. Both preceded her in death.
She is survived by five sons and their wives, Otis Hansel and Frances Cooley, Harry Vincel and June Cooley, Ronald Lamar and Connie Cooley, and James William Cooley, all of Prestonsburg; and Caleb Bernard and Edwina Cooley of Pikeville; two sisters, Oma Hughes and Malta Porter, both of Prestonsburg; 15 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, August 28, at 1 p.m., at the Community Methodist Church at Prestonsburg, with Rev. Steve Pescosolido and Rev. Paul Coleman officiating.
Burial will follow in the Richmond Cemetery at Prestonsburg.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Burke Funeral Home, Prestonsburg.
Visitation is at the funeral home.

Gaylord Reynolds
Gaylord Reynolds, age 65, of Dayton, Ohio, passed away, Thursday, August 14, 2003.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jeff and Hattie Reynolds; one son, Doug; four sisters and six brothers.
He is survived by Ellen Reynolds, his wife of 41 years.
Other survivors include two sons Terry and wife, Vickey, and Glenn and wife, Tanya; one daughter, Angela and husband, Doug Cusick; one brother, Homer Reynolds; five sisters, Ruby Akers, Madge Spurgeon, Mona Damron, Maudie Meade and Joanne Whipp; grandchildren, Joshua and Kassi Cusick, Ashley, Courtney, Brittney, Rachel, Rebecca, Luke and Mariah Reynolds; numerous nieces and nephews; and several other relatives and friends.
Gaylord retired from Montgomery County Parking Garage, after 20 years of service.
Funeral services were 1 p.m., Monday, August 18, at Newcomer-Farley Funeral Home, 3940 Kettering Blvd., with Moderator Dee Osborne and Foster Akers officiating.
Burial was at Willow View Cemetery.
Visitation was Sunday at the funeral home.
Phyllis Crockett Vanderpool
Phyllis Crockett Vanderpool, age 80, of Cedar Mountain, North Carolina, formerly of Estill, widow of Talmadge Vanderpool, passed away, Saturday, August 23, 2003, at her residence in Cedar Mountain.
She was born in Floyd County, the daughter of the late Phillip S. and Maude E. Crockett.
Survivors include one daughter, Judith V. Webb of Etowah, North Carolina; one son, Phillip W. Vanderpool of Charleston, South Carolina; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted, Tuesday, August 26, at 2 p.m., at the Rocky Hill Baptist Church, Cedar Mountain, North Carolina, with the Rev. L. Alton Taylor officiating.
Burial will be Wednesday, August 27, at 2 p.m., in the Crockett Family Cemetery, Wytheville, Virginia, with the Moody and Connelly Funeral Home, Bevard, North Carolina, in charge of arrangements.

Greta Bentley Tackett
Greta Bentley Tackett, 26, of Drift, died Sunday, August 24, 2003, at the McDowell Appalachian Regional Hospital emergency room, following an ATV accident.
Born October 5, 1976, at McDowell, she was the daughter of Violet Spears Bentley and the late Curt Bentley. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by her husband, Terry Sherman Tackett.
In addition to her husband and mother, she is also survived by a son, Justin Kyle Tackett of Drift; twin daughters, Kacie Danielle and Nicole Leighann Tackett, both of Drift; her maternal grandmother, Violet Spears Bentley of McDowell; a brother, Gregory Bentley, and a sister, Amanda Burke, both of McDowell.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Isaac Spears; and paternal grandparents, Hatfield and Dorothy Jones Bentley.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, August 27, at 11 a.m., at the Little Rosa Old Regular Baptist Church at McDowell, with Old Regular Baptist ministers officiating.
Burial will be in the Greenbury Hall Cemetery at McDowell, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin.
Visitation is at the church.
Jettie Blair
Jettie Blair, age 95, of Prestonsburg, passed away, Saturday, August 23, 2003, at her residence, following an extended illness.
She was born March 18, 1908, at Blaine, a daughter of the late Richard and Sara Jane (Caudill) Thompson. She was a member of the Brandy Keg Freewill Baptist Church, at Prestonsburg.
She was married
to Verlie (Buck) Blair, who preceded her in death.
Survivors include five sons, Robert D. Blair, Fredrick Blair, John R. Blair, and Bill Blair, all of Prestonsburg, and James E. Blair of Columbia, Tennessee; one daughter, Mablelene Blackburn of Willard, Ohio; one sister, Hattie Bowe of Columbus, Ohio; 26 grandchildren, and several great and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, August 25, at 11 a.m., from the Burke Funeral Home in Prestonsburg, with Brothers Roger Music, and Bobby Neile Osborne, and Rev. Birkey Lewis officiating.
Burial was in the Blair Cemetery at Paintsville.
All arrangements were under the direction of Burke Funeral Home.
Visitation was at the funeral home.
