Douglas Lloyd Brown, 78, of Staffordsville, died Friday, August 22, 2003, at the Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center.
Born on January 17, 1925, in Van Lear, he was the son of the late George D. Brown and Molly Berry Brown, and the step-son of Mary Jane Akers Brown. He was a former company president for 30 years and former chairman of the board for Brown Food Service Inc., Louisa. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran.
Survivors, in addition to his former wife, Mable Holbrook Brown, include two sons, Kenneth Douglas Brown of Wilmington, North Carolina, and Wayne Louis Brown of Prestonsburg; one brother, John Forrest Brown of Callawassie Island, South Carolina; five grandchildren, Jennifer Lee MacAvoy, Kenneth Douglas Brown II, Andrew Todd Brown, Chelsey Nichole Brown, and Jilleyn Lee Brown; three great-grandchildren, Jacob David MacAvoy, KyLee Morgan MacAvoy, and Skyler Deliney Brown.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, August 25, at 11 a.m., at the Carter Funeral Home Chapel, Prestonsburg, with Rev. Mark Walz officiating.
Interment was in the Holbrook Family Cemetery, at Prestonsburg.
Military graveside services were conducted by Big Sandy Chapter No. 18, DAV.

LTC Benjamin F. Hall
Funeral services for LTC Benjamin F. Hall, 65, of Cabot, Arkansas, were held at 3 p.m., Sunday, August 24, 2003, at Farrar Funeral Home Chapel, with Michael Qualls officiating.
Burial was in Promise Land Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Farrar Funeral Home of Farmerville.
Mr. Hall died at his residence. He was retired from the United States Air Force and Air Force Reserves, and was a flight instructor for Lockheed-Martin at Little Rock Air Force Base.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Benjamin F. Hall and Anna J. Hall of Floyd County, Ky., and one sister, Tillie Akers of Ludlow Falls, Ohio.
Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Richardson Hall of Cabot, Arkansas, (formerly of Farmerville, Louisiana); three sons, Joshua Jordan Richardson and wife, Meredith, of West Monroe, Louisiana, Craig Steven Hall of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Benjamin Reade Hall of Birmingham, Alabama; two daughters, Lisa Andrea Baber and husband, Larry, of Lexington, Ky., and Jessica Michele Gill and husband, Jonathan of Shreveport, Louisiana; one grandson, Morgan Baber of Lexington, Ky.; two sisters, Emogene Dorton and husband, Ray, of Elizabethtown, Ky., and Christine Hackworth and husband, James, of Marion, Ohio; one brother, Carroll Gene and wife, Kay of Versailles, Ky.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers: Andy Wilkes, Ron Bethea, Steve Stoneking, John Stone, Bill Nail and Joe Mastropieri.
Honorary pallbearers: Kenny Free, Joe Owen, Bill Burton, Hugh Beam, and D.C. Grubbs.
Visitation was at Farrar Funeral Home in Farmerville.
Dorothy Atherton Smith Hayes
Dorothy Atherton Smith Hayes, age 84, of Langley, widow of Earmest Hayes, passed away, Thursday, August 21, 2003, at the Riverview Manor Health Care, Prestonsburg.
She was born June 27, 1919, in Bowling Green, the daughter of the late Luther Smith and Esme Brett Smith.
Survivors include one son, Ronald Hayes of Winchester; one daughter, Sandra Hayes Sheffield of Betsy Layne; one sister, Betty Driscoll of Atlanta, Georgia; two grandchildren, Elissa O’Bryan, and Heather Amistadi, and two great-grandchildren, Casandri O’Bryan and Dorothy O’Bryan.
Funeral services for Dorothy Hayes will be conducted Saturday, August 23, at 1 p.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, with Clergymen Jimmy Hall and Clinton Moore officiating.
Burial will follow in the Davidson Memorial Gardens, at Ivel, under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home.
Visitation is after 5 p.m., Friday, at the funeral home.
William “Bill” Crum
William “Bill” Crum, 79, of Banner, husband of Thelma Hurd Crum, passed away Thursday, August 21, 2003, at Our Lady of the Way Hospital, Martin.
He was born April 5, 1924, in Martin, the son of the late Sol and Suvvie Carver Crum. He was a retired truck driver.
In addition to his wife, Thelma, he is survived by two sons, Michael Conn of Lexington, and Dean Carroll of Printer.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Anna Mae Newsome Crum.
Funeral services for William “Bill” Crum will be conducted Sunday, August 24, at 1 p.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, with Clergyman Ellis Stephens officiating.
Burial will follow in the Conn Cemetery, at Printer, under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home, Martin.
Visitation is after 5 p.m., Friday, at the funeral home.
Sidney Allen “Sap” Parker
Sidney Allen “Sap” Parker, 67, of Prestonsburg, died Monday, August 18, 2003, at Highlands Regional Medical Center.
Born June 1, 1936, in Louisa, he was the son of Kathleen Adkins Parker of Prestonsburg, and the late Willie B. Parker. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Prestonsburg, a member of Zebulon Masonic Lodge No. 273, Prestonsburg, and the Oleika Shrine Temple in Lexington.
He was a former insurance agent, self-employed at Parker & Associates Insurance Company.
He is survived by his wife, Polly Dalton Parker.
In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by one son, Stephen Parker (Michelle) of Prestonsburg; two sisters, Betty Parker and Peggy Hereford (David), both of Lexington; and one grandson, Dalton Michael Parker.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Joyce Stephens.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, August 20, at 1 p.m., at the Carter Funeral Home Chapel, Prestonsburg, with Dr. Floyd Price and Randy Polk officiating.
Interment will be at Davidson Memorial Gardens, at Ivel.
Visitation is at the funeral home.

Ellis Allen Bailey
Ellis Allen Bailey, age 93, of Allen, husband of the late Elizabeth Mayo Bailey, passed away, Thursday, August 14, 2003, in Biloxi, Mississippi.
He was born March 16, 1910, the son of the late Clayborn Bailey and Lara Allen Bailey. He was a graduate of Berea College at Berea, with a civil engineering degree. He was proud of being an engineer on numerous large construction sites in Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, and Arizona. He often reminisced of his part in the construction of Dale Hollow Dam in Tennessee, and various constructions of interstate highways.
Survivors include his granddaughters, Kim Bailey Russell of Gulfport, Mississippi, and Tina Bailey Beaver of Lexington, North Carolina; three grandsons, Robin Curtis Bailey of St. Martin, Mississippi, and Oliver Bailey and Tyler Bailey, both of Sarasota, Florida; four great-grandchildren, Jessica Russell, Patrick Bailey, Kristina Russell and Nicole Pendleton.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Donald Ellis Bailey; a brother, Joe Bailey; four sisters, Donna Hinton, Maggie Taylor, Myrtle Hardwick and Edna Dickerson.
Funeral services for Ellis Allen Bailey were conducted Monday, August 18, at 1 p.m., at the Hall Funeral Home, at Martin.
Burial followed in the Davidson Memorial Gardens, at Ivel, under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home.
Visitation was at the funeral home.
