Annis S. Wright, age 79, of Camden, Tn., formerly of Floyd County, widow of Elec Wright, passed away Friday, May 3, 2002, at her residence in Camden, Tn.
She was born March 5, 1923, in Hunter, Ky., the daughter of the late Charlie Salisbury and Linnie Conn Salisbury. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include three daughters, Carolyn McCleese of Camden, Tn., Marietta Ferrell of Livonia, Mi., and Linda Faye Moore of Huntsville, Al.; one brother, Morgan Salisbury of Hunter, Ky.; four sisters, Marie Salisbury of Hunter, Ky., Syble white of Delbarton, W.Va., Hester Copley, and Hattie LeMaster, both of Rittman, Oh.; 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Dorothy Mae Wright; one brother, John Salisbury; and one sister, Oma Salisbury.
Funeral services for Annis S. Wright were conducted Tuesday, May 7, 2002, at 2:00 p.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, Ky., with the clergyman, Jack McCleese, officiating.
Burial was in the Wright-Salisbury Cemetery, Hunter, Ky., under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home.
Visitation was at the funeral home.
Hazel Marie Shepherd Collins
Hazel Marie Shepherd Collins, 56, of Hueysville, Ky., died Wednesday, May 1, 2002, following an extended illness.
Born on June 25, 1945, in Gunlock, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Norman and Myrtle Shepherd. She was a homemaker and member of the Salt Lick Community Christian Church.
She is survived by her husband, Sam Collins.
Other survivors include two sons, Paul Douglas Shepherd and Christopher Shepherd, both of Hueysville, Ky.; two daughters, Joy Lynn Howard and Remona Marie Shepherd, both of Hueysville, Ky.; one step-daughter, Samara Shepherd; two brothers, Orville Shepherd of David, Ky. and Henry Shepherd of Greenwich, Oh.; four sisters, Eva Jane Bailey of Hueysville, Ky., Linda Shepherd of Gunlock, Ky., Brenda Kilgore of Hippo, Ky., and Teresa Puckett of Salyersville, Ky.; nine grandchildren, and six step-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Jackie Shepherd and Randy Shepherd; four brothers, Glenn Shepherd, Paul Shepherd, Norman Shepherd, and Carter Lee Shepherd; and one sister, Ethel Lee Shepherd.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, May 4, 2002, at 1 p.m., at the Salt Lick Community United Baptist Church, Hueysville, Ky., with Carlos Beverly, Bethel Bolen, and Ollie Watts officiating.
Burial was in the Brushy Bill Cemetery, Gunlock, Ky., Magoffin County, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, Ky.
Visitation was at the Salt Lick Community United Baptist Church.
Melvina L. Brown
Melvina L. Brown, age 84, of McDowell, Ky., was born on September 5, 1917, in Craynor, Ky. She was the daughter of the late Lewis and Arelia Spears Likens. She departed this life following an extended illness on Saturday, April 27, 2002, at the St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington, Ky.
She was married
on June 22, 1933, to Willie D. Brown, who preceded her in death. Unto this union was born one son and seven daughters, Bill Brown of Ligon, Ky., Annette Tackett of McDowell, Ky., Genevieve Wright of McDowell, Ky., Bobbie Osborne of McDowell, Ky., Bessie Newman of St. Mary’s Ohio, Brenda Ratliff of Sidney, Ohio, and Jonell Tackett of Prestonsburg, Ky.
She was preceded in death by Beulah Martin. She was also preceded in death by 14 brothers and sisters.
There are 22 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. There is a host of many relatives and friends who will mourn her passing.
Funeral services were Tuesday, April 30, 2002, at 11 a.m., at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, Ky., with Woodrow Dye, and other Regular Baptist ministers, officiating.
Burial was in the Boyd Cemetery, at Hi Hat, Ky.
Evelyn Preston Turner
Evelyn Preston Turner, 85, of Lexington, died Monday, April 29, 2002, at St. Joseph Hospital.
The widow of Andrew Jackson Turner, she was born in Floyd County, Ky., the daughter of James Milton and Mel Vina Sparks Preston. She was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church and Noble Grand of Iaeger Rebekah Lodge No. 66.
Her daughter, Carol Lester of Lexington; sons, Andrew Jackson Turner of Wichita Falls, Texas, and Maurice Turner of Paris, Kentucky; and special niece, Patty Jones Williams of Owingsville, Ky., survive her. A brother, John Preston of Greenville, Tennessee, and sister, Mary Elizabeth Mullins of Benton, Illinois, also survive. She has five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at Hall Funeral Home in Martin, at 11:00 a.m., on Thursday, May 2.
The officiating minister will be Don Dilday; Jerry Zuniga will present two vocal numbers; the eulogy will be given by Jack Justin Turner; and the brothers message by John Preston.
Visitation will be at Hall Funeral Home on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Pallbearers: John Preston, Bryan Pack, Bill Mullins, Tommy Pack, Jack Turner IV, and Roland Williams.
James Dean Halbert
James Dean Halbert, age 43, of Ypsilanti, Mi., formerly of Floyd County, Ky., passed away Friday, April 26, 2002, at the St. Joseph Hospital, Ypsilanti, Mich.
He was born September 25, 1958, in Martin, Ky., the son of the late Jake Halbert and Ella Craft Halbert.
Survivors include one daughter, Nannie Marie Halbert of Salyersville, Ky.; two sisters, Wanda Garnell Miller of Ypsilanti, Mi., and Judy Ward of Prestonsburg, Ky.; five brothers, Garner Ray Halbert of Farmington, New Mexico, John Glenn Halbert, Hubert Halbert, and Jake Halbert Jr., all of Langley, Ky., and Greg Halbert of Prestonsburg, Kentucky.
Funeral services for James Dean Halbert will be conducted Thursday, May 2, 2002, at 1 p.m., at the Hall Funeral Home, Martin, Ky., with the clergymen, Bob Varney and Tommy Hall, officiating.
Burial will follow in the Lucy Hall Cemetery, McDowell, Ky., under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home, Martin, Ky.
Visitation is after 10 a.m., Thursday, at the funeral home.
Hager Elizabeth White
Hager Elizabeth White, age 97, of Prestonsburg, Ky., passed away Thursday, April 25, 2002, at her residence, after an extended illness.
She was born July 8, 1904, at Oil Springs, Ky., a daughter of the late L.L. and Mary (Coldiron) Meade.
She was married
to Rainley (Snow) White, who preceded her in death.
She is survived by two sons, and two daughters, William L. White, and Bobby Ray White, both of Prestonsburg, Ky., Mary Ann Hall of Allen, Ky., and Linda Clark of Paintsville, Ky. Also surviving are one brother and one sister, Bill Meade of Charleston, Tenn., and Beulah Moore of Paintsville, Ky. There are 13 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, April 27, 2002, at 11 a.m., at the First Presbyterian Church in Prestonsburg, Ky., with Rev. George Love officiating.
Burial was in the May Cemetery in Prestonsburg, Ky.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be sent to the First Presbyterian Church in Prestonsburg, Ky., or Big Sandy Hospice in Prestonsburg, Ky.
Visitation was at the funeral home and at the church.
All arrangements were under the direction of Burke Funeral Home, Prestonsburg, Ky.
Active pallbearers are: Billy Ray White, John W. White, Jerry Clark, Ray Clark, Don Clark and Ron Clark.
Roger D. Gayheart
Roger D. Gayheart, 49, of Ligon, Ky., died Thursday, April 25, 2002, following an extended illness.
Born on May 23, 1952, in Ligon, Ky., he was the son of the late Dave Gayheart and Delphia Blankenship Gayheart. He was a disabled gas well employee and attended the Old Regular Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Melinda Newsome Gayheart.
Survivors include one step-son, Steven Newsome of Ligon, Ky.; two brothers, Hillard Gayheart of Stroh, Ind., Kennith Gayheart of Hi Hat, Ky.; three sisters, Gerlie Tackett of Hi Hat, Ky., Sharon Reynolds and Betty Tackett, both of Virgie, Ky.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, General Gayheart and Andy Gayheart; and one sister, Eulene Gayheart.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, April 28, 2002, at 1 p.m., at the Little Nancy Old Regular Baptist Church at Hi Hat, Ky., with Old Regular Baptist ministers officiating.
Burial will be in the Blankenship Cemetery, McDowell, Ky., under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, Ky.
Visitation will be at the Little Nancy Old Regular Baptist Church after 6 p.m., on Friday.
Virgie H. Shepherd
Virgie H. Shepherd, age 89, of Gunlock, Ky., widow of Raleigh Shepherd, passed away Tuesday, April 23, 2002, at the Highlands Regional Medical Center, Prestonsburg, Ky.
She was born June 16, 1912, in Magoffin County, Ky., the daughter of the late John Mainard Hale and Sally Layne Hale. She was a homemaker and a member of the Salt Lick Community United Baptist Church, Hueysville, Ky.
Survivors include eight sons, Eugene Shepherd of Greenwich, Oh., Kenneth Shepherd of Claytool, In., John Clayton Shepherd of Gunlock, Ky., Edward Lee Shepherd of Pierceton, In., Kermit Shepherd of Wabash, In., James Gordon Shepherd of Leslie, Mi., Haskell Shepherd of Auburn, Mi., Raleigh Shepherd Jr. of Pikeville, Ky.; five daughters, Joyce Aileen Hale of Ypsilanti, Mi., Jewel Dean Joseph of Kenton, Oh., Pauline Schrader of Plymouth, Oh., Wanda Faye Bailey of Garrett, In., Janet Gaye Conley of East Point, Ky.; three sisters, Stella Wireman of Gunlock, Ky., Aileen Shepherd of Welston, Oh., Rosa Lea Mann of Warsaw, In.; 45 grandchildren, 55 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
