Nell Gibson Hagewood, 91, of Prestonsburg, Ky., died Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at Highlands Regional Medical Center, following an extended illness.
Born September 17, 1910, in Wayland, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Joseph Gibson and Margaret Turner Gibson. She was a homemaker and a member of the First United Methodist Church, Prestonsburg, Ky.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Hagewood.
Survivors include one daughter, Betty Gail Minix of Prestonsburg, Ky.; one son, Jesse Brown Hagewood of Inverness, Fla.; three sisters, Ethel Krueger of Port Charlotte, Fla., Audrey Marshall of Atlanta, Ga., and Mattie Gibson of Hyden, Ky.; four brothers, Joseph Gibson of Port Charlotte, Fla., James Gibson of New Haven, Ind., Roy Gibson of Carbondale, Ill., and Will Gibson of Pippa Passes, Ky.; six grandchildren, Maurice Minix and Marty Minix, both of Prestonsburg, Ky., Melanie Minix of Nashville, Tn., Jack Hagewood of Elkview, W.Va., Jane Chapman of Ashland, Ky., and Vickie Pharo of Greensboro, N.C.; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, April 13, 2002, at 11 a.m., at the Carter Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Wayne Sayre officiating.
Interment will be in the Mayo Cemetery, Prestonsburg, Ky.
Visitation is at the funeral home, after 1 p.m., Friday.
Estill Johnson
Estill Johnson, 74, of Weeksbury, died Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at U.K. Medical Center, Lexington, Ky., following an extended illness.
Born on October 27, 1927, in Weeksbury, Ky., he was the son of Warfield Johnson and Rena Little Johnson. He was retired as an AT&T worker.
He was a member of the Church of Christ, at Weeksbury.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mildred Barnett Johnson.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Burke Johnson.
Other survivors include one brother, Carl Johnson of Indiana; two sisters, Lexie Tackett and Larcie Blevins, both of Weeksbury.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday, April 11, 2002, at 11 a.m., at the Weeksbury Church of Christ, with ministers of the church officiating.
Burial was in the Warfield Johnson Cemetery, at Weeksbury, Ky., under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, Ky.
Visitation was at the Church of Christ, at Weeksbury.
Virgie Hicks
Virgie Hicks, age 90, of Hippo, passed away on Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at Riverview Health Care Center.
She was born in Risner, Ky., on October 9, 1911, the daughter of the late Obe and Mary Jones Ousley.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Hicks, in February 1990.
She is survived by three daughters, Edna Mae (Wayne) Harner of Jackson, Mi., Wanda F. (Billy Ray) Hayes of Hueysville, and Loyce R. (John) Kirk of Paintsville, and Crystal River Florida; seven grandchildren, Teresa Harner Vinton, Paula Harner, Randy Harner, Shari Harner, Dr. Steven Hayes, John C. Kirk, and Kim Kirk; and ten great-grandchildren, Richie Vinton, Johnny Zakrzewski, Chinelle Rulison, Andy Rulison, Trevor Harner, Matthew Harner, Rachael Hayes, Will Hayes, Alex Kirk, and Molly Kirk; and one sister, Ethel Sparks of Peru, Indiana.
She was a member of the Old Regular Baptist Church for 66 years.
Funeral services will be on Saturday, April 13, 2002, at 11 a.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, at Martin, Ky., with the Old Regular Baptist ministers officiating.
Burial will be in the Hicks Cemetery, at Hippo, Ky, under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home, aMartin, Ky.
Pallbearers: Dr. Stan Hayes, John C. Kirk, Randy Harner, Richie Vinton, Andy Rulison, and John Zakrzewski.
Elmer H. Morrison
Elmer H. Morrison, age 77, of Wayland, husband of Florence Best Morrison, died Tuesday, April 9, 2002, in the Veterans Administration Hospital, Huntington, W.Va.
He was born September 15, 1924, in Wayland, the son of the late Elmer G. and Mallie Martin Morrison.
He was a retired postmaster of the Wayland post office, a fire chief of 30 years for the Wayland Fire Department; a member of James W. Alley Masonic Lodge, Wayland, and a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason; served as representative of the Big Sandy ADD to Legislative Research Committee; a World War II Army Air Corps veteran; a member of the American Ex-Prisoners of War Association; and a member of the Wayland United Methodist Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Connie Horn of Prestonsburg.
Funeral services for Elmer H. Morrison will be conducted Friday, April 12, at 1 p.m., in the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, Ky., with Brad Tackett officiating.
Burial wll follow in the Davidson Memorial Gardens, Ivel, under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home.
Visitation is at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Wayland United Methodist Church building fund.
Charles Russell Harris
Charles Russell Harris, age 77, of Lake Road, Prestonsburg, Ky., passed away Wednesday, April 10, 2002, at the Highlands Regional Medical Center in Prestonsburg, Ky., after an extended illness.
He was born August 26, 1924, in Prestonsburg, Ky., a son of the late Joe T. and Mary Emily (Wells) Harris.
He was married
to Mary Anna (Stephenson) Harris who preceded him in death.
He was a self-employed carpenter and a contractor, and veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He is survived by one son, Tom Harris of Prestonsburg, Ky., and one daughter, Patricia Harris of Lexington, Ky.; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, April 13, 2002, at 1 p.m., with Brother Larry Adams officiating.
Burial will be in the Harris Family Cemetery at Prestonsburg, Ky., under the direction of Burke Funeral Home, Prestonsburg, Ky.
D.A.V. Chapter No. 18 of Auxier, Ky. will be giving military honors.
Visitation is at the funeral home.
Susan Conley Akers
Susan Conley Akers, age 86, of Louisville, formerly of Banner, Ky., died Thursday, in Louisville.
A native of Prestonsburg, Ky. area, she was a retiree from the Anderson (Indiana) City Schools, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and of the Hurstbourne Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Aaron J. Akers.
She is survived by a daughter, Sara Akers Brady; two sons, Larry and Ed Akers; two sisters, Maxine Osborne of Wheelwright, Ky., and Estelle Ruth Fletcher of Tuscon, Arizona; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Also surviving are 11 nieces and three nephews.
Funeral services will be Monday, 10 a.m., at Pearson-Ratterman Bros. Funeral Home, 12900 Shelbyville Rd., Louisville, Ky., with visitation Sunday, 2-8 p.m.
Burial will be 4 p.m. Monday in Davidson Memorial Park, Ivel, Ky.

Relix Prater
Relix (Fid) Prater, 77, of Hueysville, Ky., died Monday, April 1, 2002, following an extended illness.
Born on July 10, 1924, at Hueysville, Ky., he was the son of the late John Dee Prater and Mary Jane Prater. He was a disabled coal miner.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ollie Sparkman Prater.
He is survived by his wife, Reda E. Crace Prater.
Other survivors include one son, Charles Prater of Hueysville, Ky.; two daughters, Geraldine Johnson of Hueysville, Ky., and Priscilla Prater of Hippo, Ky.; one brother, Aaron Prater of Prestonsburg, Ky.; six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and one step-daughter, Carolyn Hackworth of Prestonsburg, Ky.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Sol (Bud) Prater, Ezra Prater, and Oscar Prater; three sisters, Cindy Marie Clemons, Judy Prater, and Polly Griffith.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, April 4, 2002, at 1 p.m., at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, Ky., with ministers of Old Regular Baptist Church officiating.
Burial will be in the Prater Cemetery, Salyers Br., Hueysville, Ky., under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin.

Olvie Vanderpool Reed
Olvie Vanderpool Reed, age 78, of Hueysville, Ky., wife of Roger Reed Sr., passed away Tuesday, April 2, 2002, in St. Joseph Hospital, Lexington, Ky.
She was born June 11, 1922, in Glo, Ky., the daughter of the late William Vanderpool and Cordelia Sexton Vanderpool. She was a homemaker.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by three sons, Roger Reed Jr., of Hueysville, Ky., Jerry Reed of Lexington, Ky., and Gary E. Reed of Eastern, Ky.; one daughter, Priscille Reed Tussey of Hueysville, Ky.; two brothers, Robert Vanderpool of Plymouth, Oh., and Elliott Vanderpool of Kendallville In., 13 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Olvie Reed will be conducted Saturday, April 6, 2002, at 11 a.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, Ky., with the clergymen, Ondie Wireman and Roger Bolen, officiating.
Burial will follow in the Reed Cemetery, Hueysville, Ky., under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home.
