Rebecca Moore Rasnick
Rebecca Moore Rasnick, 94, of Lexington, Ky., died Thurs-day, March 28, 2002, at the Christian Health Center, following an extended illness.
Born on August 19, 1907, in Mousie, Ky., she was the daughter of the late John Wesley Moore and Geneva Martin Moore. She was a former bookkeeper for the Floyd County School Board.
She lived in Prestonsburg for more than 40 years before moving to Lexington. She was a member of the First Baptist Church (Irene Cole Memorial), a member of the Eastern Star, Adah Chapter 24, and a member of the Miriam Rebekah Lodge No. 31.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Rasnick.
Survivors include one grandson, Frank Harris of Lexington, Ky.; two granddaughters, Sandra H. Palmer and Rebecca Harris, both of Lexington, Ky.; two great-granddaughters, Rebecca Palmer and Sarah Palmer, both of Lexington, Ky.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Joyce Rasnick Harris.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, April 2, 2002, at 1 p.m., at the Carter Funeral Home Chapel, Prestonsburg, Ky., with Dr. Floyd Price officiating.
Interment was in the Johnson Memorial Park, Pikeville, Ky., under the direction of Carter Funeral Home.

Cleo (Gray) Sammons Rowe
Cleo (Gray) Sammons Rowe, age 86, of Prestonsburg, Ky., passed away Monday, April 1, 2002, at the Riverview Manor Nursing Home in Prestonsburg, Ky., after an extended illness.
She was born September 23, 1915, at Water Gap, Ky., a daughter of the late Seymour & Annie (Lafferty) Gray.
She was first married to Toy Sammons, who preceded her in death. She later married Rev. Charley Rowe, who also preceded her in death.
She was a grocery merchant and head dietian at Prestonsburg Hospital. She was a cook at the Prestonsburg High School, a member of the Goble-Roberts Community Freewill Baptist Church.
She is survived by two sons, Jay Sammons, and John D. Sammons, both of Prestonsburg, Ky.; and two daughters, Toy Ann Readon of Shelbyville, Ky., Libby Owens of Prestonsburg, Ky.; three step-sons, James Rowe of Lexington, Ky., Roger Rowe, and Jack Rowe, both of Prestonsburg, Ky.; four step-daughters, Dorothy Day of Lake Placid, Fla., Ruth Bridget of Fla., Grace Woody of Prestonsburg, Ky., Sylvia Mosley of Clarksville, Tenn.; one brother, Charles Gray of Prestonsburg, Ky.; a host of grandchildren, step-grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one step-son, Charles C. Rowe of Clarksville, Tennessee.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday, April 4, 2002, at 1 p.m., from the Goble-Roberts Community Freewill Baptist Church, with Joey Sammons, and Rev. Paul David Coleman officiating.
Burial followed in the Richmond Memorial Cemetery at Prestonsburg, Ky., under the direction of Burke Funeral Home, Prestonsburg.

Virgil Combs
Virgil Combs, age 81, of Wayland, Ky., husband of Beatrice Castle Combs, passed away Tuesday, April 2, 2002, at the University of Kentucky Medical Center, Lexington, Ky.
He was born September 9, 1920, at Shelbiana, Ky., the son of the late James Combs and Louverna Conley Combs. He was a retired coal miner, a U.S. Navy, World War II veteran, and a member of the Wayland United Methodist Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Brenda Carol Horne, and her husband, Roger, of Wayland, Ky.; one brother, Savel Combs of Shelby, Oh.; two sisters, Florence Mary Wheeler and Martha Slone, both of Shelby, Oh.; three grandchildren, Roger J. Horne, Greg Horne, and Angela Stephens; and three great-grandchildren, Breann Michelle Horne, Austin Blake Horne, and Dawson Chase Stephens.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Clara Eda Combs; two brothers, Kendall Combs and Amel Combs; and one sister, Sadie Gibson.
Funeral services for Virgil Combs will be conducted Friday, April 5, 2002, at 11 a.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, Ky., with the clergymen, Kendall Brian Combs and Brad Tackett, officiating.
Burial will follow in the Martin Cemetery, Wayland, Ky., under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home.
Pallbearers: Greg Horne, Roger J. Horne, Timothy Stephens, Paul Williams, Shawn Case, Ronnie J.R. Combs, and Paul Baker, Jr.

Miriam Josephine Auxier
Miriam Josephine Auxier, 88, of Irvine, died Friday, March 29, after an extended illness.
Born October 18, 1913, in Floyd County, she was a daughter of the late Americus McCullough and Lorena Agnes Harmon Badgett.
She graduated from Prestonsburg High School and attended Pikeville College for two years. She taught at Lower Little Paint School in East Point before marrying James T. Auxier on May 9, 1936. He preceded her in death in 1977.
To this union were born five children: Thomas, Peggy, Patricia, Larry and Mary Jane.
She was a homemaker and an active member of Irvine United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Philathea Sunday School class, the Christmas Craft Group, and the Twin City Homemaker’s Club.
Survivors include her children: Thomas Auxier (Sylvia) of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; Peggy Leake (Francis Raymond) of Richmond, Ky.; Dr. Patricia Auxier of Killen, Ala.; Larry Auxier (Jo) of Irvine, Ky.; and Mary Jane Nelson (John) of Danville, Ky.;
Her nine grandchildren, Mary Alison Bowling (Charles) of Richmond, Ky.; Greg Shackelford of Richmond, Ky.; Brent Shackelford (Lorah) of Richmond, Ky.; James T. Auxier II, and Travis Auxier of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; Lauren Clark (Charles) of Georgetown, Ky.; Sarah Auxier of Frankfort, Ky.; and Julie and Patrick Nelson of Danville, Ky.;
Her five great-grandchildren, Ashley Wiseman, Nicholas Bowling, Ashley Clark, Sarah Shackelford and Jacob Shackelford;
Her sister, Lorena Horne of East Point, Ky., and a special nephew, Steward Ray Horne (Vicki), also of East Point.
She was also survived by a host of special friends and relatives.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m., Easter Sunday, at Irvine United Methodist Church, by the Rev. Frank Wallace.
Visitation was held from 6-9 p.m., Saturday, at Lewis Funeral Home in Irvine, and from 2 p.m., until the time of the service, Sunday, at the church.
Burial followed at Sunset Memorial Gardens in West Irvine.
Pallbearers were Steward Ray Horne, Greg Shackelford, Brent Shackelford, Patrick Nelson, Charles Clark, Charles Bowling, James T. Auxier II, and Travis Auxier.
Honorary pallbearers are the Twin City Homemakers Club, the Philathea Sunday School class, the O.P. Smith Sunday School class, and the Christmas Craft Group.
Josephine was a wonderful Christian mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and had many special friends. She enjoyed cooking, helping with church bazaars, having family dinners and get-togethers, sewing, and was a gifted quiltmaker. She also loved participating in her homemaker’s club and working at the county fair.
Her greatest asset was making you feel comfortable in her home, the great dinners she hosted and the pleasure she derived from having you there.
Those who were touched by Josephine’s life will always remember her.

Robert John Holbrook
Robert John Holbrook, 54, of Auxier, Ky., died Friday, March 29, 2002, at High-lands Regional Medical Center, Prestonsburg, Ky., following an extended illness.
Born June 5, 1947, in Detroit, Mi., he was the son of Alex Holbrook of Medway, Ohio, and the late Betty Draucker Holbrook. He was a former draftsman for Wabash Alloys, and a member of the Freewill Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Brenda T. Holbrook of Auxier, Ky.
Survivors, other than his wife and father, include two daughters, Tammy Jean Holbrook of Ft. Wayne, In., and Lisa Jane Zaragoza of Somerset, Ky.; three brothers, Mark Douglas Holbrook, and James Alex Holbrook, both of Auxier, Ky.; and Stephen Goble Holbrook of Prestonsburg, Ky.; one sister, Linda Holbrook of Sterling Heights, Mi.; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Kathy Jo Holbrook.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, April 1, 2002, at 1 p.m., at the Carter Funeral Home Chapel, Prestonsburg, Ky., with Pastor Steve Rose and Calvin Setser officiating.
Burial was in the Government Relocation Cemetery, Auxier, Ky., under the direction of Carter Funeral Home.
Pallbearers: Todd Clark, Tommy Zaragoza, Steve Holbrook, Willard Adams, Otis Collins, and Larry Taylor.

Wince O. Walters
Wince O. Walters, age 64, of Drift, Ky., husband of Helen Bray Walters, passed away Monday, April 1, 2002, at the McDowell Appalachian Regional Hospital, McDowell, Ky.
He was born October 28, 1937, in Drift, Ky., the son of the late Wince Walters and Lexie Tackett Walters. He was a disabled veteran, and attended the Garrett First Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Toby Jake Walters of Drift, Ky.; three daughters, Deloris Ann Hall of Raven, Ky., April Lynn Stewart of Minnie, Ky., and Angela Marie Howell of McDowell, Ky.; two brothers, Ernie Ratliff and Ray Walters, both of Detroit, Mi.; three sisters, Winnie Summers of Charleston, W.Va., Lenora Desilets and Sarah Haley, both of Detroit, Mi., and six grandchildren.
Funeral services for Wince O. Walters will be conducted Wednesday, April 3, 2002, at 11 a.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, Ky., with the clergymen, Randy Osborne, Ted Shannon and Larry Adams, officiating.
Burial will follow in the Drift Cemetery, Drift, Ky., under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home, Martin, Ky.
Visitation is anytime at the funeral home.

Carmel Gene Conn
Carmel Gene Conn, age 60, of David, Ky., husband of Betty Thornsbury Conn, passed away Friday, March 29, 2002, at the Highlands Regional Medical Center, Prestonsburg, Ky.
He was born April 27, 1941, in Martin, Ky., the son of the late Arthur Conn and Marie Conn Hall. He was a retired employee of Island Creek Coal Company, a member of the First Baptist Church, Allen, Ky., a member of the David Volunteer Fire Department, and a member of the UMWA.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Jennifer Hackworth and Ashley Conn, both of David, Ky.; two brothers, Delano Conn and Stevie Hall, both of Allen, Ky.; two sisters, Patty Carroll of Martin, Ky., and Katie Dudley of Langley, Ky., and two grandchildren, Whitney Hackworth and Kaitlyne Hackworth.
Funeral services for Carmel Gene Conn were conducted Sunday, March 31, 2002, at 1 p.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, Ky., with the clergymen, Arnold Turner and Joe Allen, officiating.
Burial followed in the Davidson Memorial Gardens, Ivel, Ky., under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home, Martin, Ky.
Visitation was at the funeral home.
Pallbearers: Larry Adams, William Martin Sr., Brian Kidd, Tom Colley, Mark Johnson, Michael Tussey, William Martin Jr., Anthony Gilliam, Josh Shepherd, Larry Tussey, Randy Davis, Greg Davis, and Jack Howard.
