Alice Elizabeth Groeniger Garvey, 92, of Prestonsburg, Ky., died Saturday, March 2, 2002, at Riverview Manor Health Care Center, following an extended illness.
Born August 13, 1909, she was the daughter of the late Albert Peter Groeniger and Bessie Whitcomb Groeniger. She was a former printing press operator for Strobridge Lithographing Co./Gibson Art Co. She was a member of the Zion United Church of Christ, Norwood, Ohio, for 62 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Russell Garvey, on December 26, 1981.
Survivors include one daughter, Mary Alice Garvey (Jim) Carter of Prestonsburg; two grandchildren, Aubrey James Odell (Carolyn) of Prestonsburg, Ky., and Cynthia Ann Branham (William) of Prestonsburg; two great-grandchildren, Jacob William Branham and Kaitlyn Moriah Branham.
She was preceded in death by her twin sister, Amelia Groeniger; and two brothers, Albert Groeniger and Edward Groeniger.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, March 5, 2002, at 1:30 p.m., at the Vorhis Funeral Home, Norwood, Ohio, with Rev. Howard Storm officiating.
Burial was in the Greenlawn Cemetery, Milford, Ohio.
Visitation was Sunday at the Carter Funeral Home, Prestonsburg, Ky.
Arrangements were under the direction of Carter Funeral Home.
Dewey Hughes
Dewey Hughes, age 83, of Martin, Ky., husband of Effie Vanderpool Hughes, passed away, Sunday, March 3, 2002, at the Highlands Regional Medical Center, Prestonsburg, Ky.
He was born March 3, 1919, in Martin, Ky., the son of the late Malcom Hughes and Sally Johnson Hughes. Mr. Hughes was a retired coal miner, a member of the Cold Springs Regular Baptist Church, an U.S. Army, World War II veteran, and a member of the Disabled American Veterans.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two brothers, Leonard Hughes of Lima, Oh., and Charlie Hughes of Claypool, In., and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, March 6, 2002, at 11:00 a.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, Ky., with the Old Regular Baptist ministers officiating.
Burial will follow in the Ousley Cemetery, Caney Fork, Martin, Ky., under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home.
Visitation is at the funeral home.
Leo Roberts
Leo Roberts, age 69, of Harold, Ky., husband of Hattie “Sue” Roberts, passed away Friday, March 1, 2002, at the Coal Run Village, Pike County, Ky.
Mr. Roberts was born July 13, 1932, the son of Lurlie Salisbury Roberts of Harold, Ky., and the late Harmel Roberts. Mr. Roberts was a retired school teacher for the Floyd County School System, and a former road foreman for the Department of Transportation, an U.S. Army, Korean War veteran, a member of the Betsy Layne Church of Christ, and a member of the Betsy Layne Chapter of the DAV.
In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by four sons, Stephen Lee Roberts of Betsy Layne, Ky., Timothy James Hatfield of Dana, Ky., Brian Keith Hatfield and Stephen Brent Hatfield, both of Harold, Ky.; one daughter, Teresa Monica Doss of Evansville, In.; four brothers, Charles Roberts of Lincoln Park, Mi., J.D. Roberts of Grethel, Ky., Jerry Roberts of Harold, Ky., Larry Roberts of Dana, Ky.; five sisters, Lydia Steele, Scarlet Stumbo and Tammy Jarrell, all of Harold, Ky., Thelma Spears and Patricia Layne, both of Betsy Layne, Ky., and eight grandchildren.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Lydia May Roberts; one son, Billy Roberts, and one daughter, Brenda Roberts.
Funeral services for Leo Roberts were conducted Tuesday, March 5, 2002, at 1:00 p.m., at the Betsy Layne Church of Christ, Betsy Layne, Ky., with the clergyman, Tommy Spears, officiating.
Burial was in the Davidson Memorial Gardens, Ivel, Ky., unde the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home, Martin, Ky.
Visitation was at the church.

Oma T. Branham Newsome Reynolds
Oma T. Branham Newsome Reynolds, age 89, of Harold, Ky, wife of the late Oscar Reynolds, passed away Monday, March 4, 2002, in the Pikeville Methodist Hospital, Pikeville, Ky.
She was born June 4, 1912, in Pike County, Ky., the daughter of the late Myles Branham and Dulcenia Martin.
Mrs. Reynolds was a homemaker, and a member of the Betsy Layne Freewill Baptist Church, Betsy Layne, Ky., since 1958.
Survivors include five sons, Minis Newsom of Stanville, Ky., Omer Reynolds of Lantana, Fl., Vernon Reynolds of Printer, Ky., Myles Jefferson Reynolds of Wyandotte, Mi., Kenneth Darrell Reynolds of Trenton, Mi.; four daughters, Dollie Ralph of Carleton, Mi., Thelma L. Clark and Wanda Patierno, both of Harold, Ky., Geneva Wright of Belleville, Mi.; one brother, Myles Branham Jr. of Pikeville, Ky.; three sisters, Faye Lesley of Pikeville, Ky., Ginger Branham of Ocean City, Md., Ann Trichlo of Fairfax, Va., Dinah Viers of Ypsilanti, Mi.; 40 grandchildren, 70 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and second husband, Mrs. Reynolds was preceded in death by her first husband, Preston Newsom; one son, James C. Reynolds; one daughter, Christine Newsom; and one sister, Opal Parkhurst.
Funeral services for Oma T. Branham Newsom Reynolds will be conducted, Friday, March 8, 2002, at 1 p.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, Ky., with Clergyman Tracy Patton officiating.
Burial will follow in the Davidson Memorial Gardens, Ivel, Ky., under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home.
Visitation is after 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, at the funeral home.
Bert T. Hall
Bert T. Hall, 47, of Beaver, Ky., died Saturday, March 2, 2002, following an extended illness.
Born on October 16, 1954, in Floyd County, Ky., he was the son of Okey Hall and Ruby Hamilton Hall, both of Beaver, Ky. He was disabled.
Survivors, other than his parents, include, two brothers, Ralph Hall, and Jody Hall, both of Beaver, Ky.; four sisters, Mary Lou Tackett of Beaver, Ky., Joann Tackett of Grethel, Ky., Deloris Slone of Bevinsville, Ky. and Billie Joyce Stapleton of Harold, Ky.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Randy Hall.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, March 5, 2002, at 1 p.m., at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, Ky., with ministers of the Old Regular Baptist Church officiating.
Burial will be in the Hall Cemetery, Beaver, Ky., under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home.

Tilden Howard Jr.
Tilden Howard Jr., 53, of Garrett, Ky., died Monday, March 4, 2002, following an extended illness.
Born on October 6, 1948, in Lackey, Ky., he was the son of Effie Hicks Howard of David, Ky., and the late Tilden Howard. He was a disabled welder.
He is survived by his wife, Burneda Chaffins Howard.
Other survivors include three sons, Jerry Donavan Howard of Hueysville, Ky., Glen Ramey of Weeksbury, Ky., and Daniel Ramey of Hindman, Ky.; one daughter, Effie Shannon Howard of Garrett, Ky.; two brothers, Jerry Howard of Garrett, Ky., and Douglas Howard of Topmost, Ky.; two sisters, Teresa Justice of David, Ky., and Edith Martin of Langley, Ky.; two grandchildren, Michael Howard and Joshua Ramey.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, March 7, 2002, at 11 a.m., at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, Ky., with Baptist ministers officiating.
Burial will be in the Howard Family Cemetery, Gunlock, Ky., under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home.

Donald Ray Hamilton
Donald Ray Hamilton, 60, of Teaberry, Ky., died Sunday, March 3, 2002, following an extended illness.
Born on May 23, 1941, at Teaberry, Ky., he was the son of the late John Hamilton and Elizabeth Newsome Hamilton. He was a retired coal miner and a member of the Samaria Old Regular Baptist Church, Teaberry, Ky.
He is survived by his wife, Alpha Hall Hamilton.
Other survivors include three daughters, Angelia Newsome of Grethel, Ky., Raylynn Chapman, and Wendy Conn, both of Kimper, Ky.; four brothers, Charles Dotson of Dayton, Ohio, Emmitt Eugene (Cat) Hamilton, and Bobby Hamilton, both of Teaberry, Ky., and Ricky Hamilton of Pikeville, Ky.; four sisters, Norma Perdue, and Aileen Tripodi, both of Michigan, Margie Castillo of Teaberry, Ky., and Christine Combs of Eastern, Ky.; and four grandchildren, Brittany (BB), Levi (Bo), Seth, and Chase.
He was preceded in death by five brothers, Eddie, Gene, Estill, Jimmy, and Tolbie.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, March 6, 2002, at 12 noon, at the Samaria Old Regular Baptist Church, Teaberry, Ky., with ministers of the Old Regular Baptist Church officiating.
Burial will be in the John Hamilton Cemetery, Tinker Fork, Teaberry, Ky., under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, Ky.
Visitation will be at the Samaria Old Regular Baptist Church.
