Anna O. Elliott Stephens passed away from this life at 5:50 p.m. on Friday, February 8, 2002 at the Jane Phillips memorial Hospital in Bartlesville, Ok.
Born on March 18, 1909 at Beaver, KY, she was the daughter of the late George and Ida May Elliott, also of Ky.
On November 27, 1932 she married
Orville R. Stephens of Maytown, Ky. During her long career she and her husband owned and operated several businesses, including movie theatres, grocery stores and other business enterprises. She retired as a Postmaster of the U.S. Post Office.
In addition, she and her husband were members of Masonic organizations, including the White Shrine. For many years, she was one of the trustees and treasurer of the Elliott Chapel, a Methodist mission built by her grandfather in 1902 at Beaver, Ky. Mrs. Stephens was a member of Gardenside Baptist Church, where she was active in the Fidelis Sunday school class and the Young at Heart group. She was highly regarded by all that knew her, including recent friends she made during her brief stay at Tallgrass Estates in Bartlesville.
Survivors include a son, J.R. Stephens, and wife, Jerry I. Stephens, of Bartlesville, Ok.; a granddaughter, Frances A. Stephens, of Houston, Tx.; and two sisters, Mrs. Zettie Snyder and Mrs. Matilda Kendrick both of Lexington, Ky.
She was preceded in death by her husband, as well as three brothers and five sisters.
Services will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 13, at the Gardenside Baptist Church with Dr. Ron Fellemende officiating.
Burial will follow in Davidson Memorial Gardens, Ivel, KY, at 2:30 p.m.
Visitation is at W.R. Milward Mortuary-Southland.
Elmo Benton Allen
Elmo Benton Allen, 70, of Prestonsburg, Ky., died Friday, February 8, 2002, following an illness.
Born on April 15, 1931, at Hinton, W.Va., he was the son of the late Oliver and Aretta Buckland Allen. He was a retired Kentucky State Police Trooper, and now a Bailiff for Floyd County Circuit Court, a member of Bonanza Freewill Baptist Church, a Kentucky Colonel, and a member of the National Rifle Association.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Spradlin Allen.
Other survivors include two sons, Elmo B. (Cheryl) Allen Jr. and Steven Lee (Teresa) Allen, both of Hinton, W.Va.; two daughters, Nanna (Tim) Fannin of Riceville, Ky., Sue (Greg) Melkowski of Bristol, Tennessee; three brothers, Harry J. Allen, and Oliver Allen, both of Hinton, W. Va., and David Allen of St. Albans, W.Va.; two sisters, Mary Harvey and Shirley Mills, both of Hinton, W.Va.; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday, February 10, 2002, at noon, at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, Ky., with Rev. Bill Campbell officiating.
Burial was in the Richmond Cemetery, Prestonsburg, Ky., under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home.
Visitation was at the funeral home.
Robin L. Newhouse
Robin L. Newhouse, 51, of Claypool, In., passed away Wednesday, February 6, 2002, in Parkview Hospital, Ft. Wayne.
She was born July 9, 1950, in Floyd County, Ky., the daughter of the late Basil and Eva Jean Shepherd Horn.
Formerly of Prestonsburg, Ky., she was a legal secretary for Roberts Law Firm, Pikeville, Ky., and a member of Faith Fellowship, Sidney. She was a singer-soloist for many churches, and a Sunday school teacher and a youth leader in several churches.
Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Don (Pam) Horn of Claypool; a brother, Tim Horn of Claypool; three nieces, Jennifer S. Rose and Shandi L. Horn, both of Claypool, and Tiffany Horn of Fort Wayne; a nephew, Jeremy Horn of Pierceton; and a grand-niece, Sarah K. Rose of Claypool.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Services were at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 9, 2002, at McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, Warsaw, with the Rev. Mike Manuel officiating.
Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw.
Homer Nelson Jr.
Homer Nelson Jr., 59, of Richardson Br., Prestonsburg, died Sunday, February 10th, 2002, following a brief illness.
Born on May 8th, 1942, at Blue River, Floyd County, he was the son of Homer Nelson Sr., and Pearlie Jane (Hackworth) Nelson.
He is survived by his wife, Elmina Hackworth Nelson.
Other survivors include one son, Mike Nelson of Prestonsburg, Ky.; one daughter, Tammy Amburgey of Garrett, Ky.; three brothers, Walter Nelson, Johnny Wayne Nelson, and Ronnie Dean Nelson, all of Prestonsburg, Ky.; three sisters, Eva Adams of North Manchester, Ind., Geneva Whitaker, and Vickie Poe, both Prestonsburg, Ky.; and one grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted, Wednesday, February 13, at 1 p.m., at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, Ky., with Manford Fannin and Denver Meade officiating.
Burial will be in the Nelson Family Cemetery, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home.
Visitation is at the funeral home.
Hazel (Dotson) Arnett
Hazel (Dotson) Arnett, 81, of Frenchburg, Ky., formerly of Prestonsburg, Ky., passed away Thursday, February 7, 2002, at the Mary Childs Hospital in Mt. Sterling, Ky., after an illness of two years.
She was born January 27, 1921, at Lawton, Ok., a daughter of the late Albert and Anna Lee (Wells) Dotson. She worked as a waitress and for the U.S. Shoe Factory and American Standard, in Prestonsburg, Ky., and was a member of the Rebekah Lodge in Prestonsburg, Ky.
She was married
to Charley Arnett who preceeds her in death.
She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Charlotte Williams of Means, Ky., Mrs. Bonnie Daly of Evansville, Ind.; two brothers, Mr. Orville Dotson, Mr. Lewis Dotson, both of Prestonsburg, Ky.; and two sisters, Mrs. Mable Honeycutt and Mrs. Susie Burchett, both of Prestonsburg, Ky., five grandaughters and four great-grandchildren.

James Winnie “Dee” Caudill
James Winnie “Dee” Caudill, 77, of Auxier, Ky., died Thursday, January 31, 2002, at his residence.
Born on September 28, 1924, in Floyd County, Ky., he was the son of the late Winnie Caudill and Alice Burton Caudill. He was a retired coal miner and Army WWII veteran. He was a member of the Auxier Free Will Baptist Church, a member of D.A.V. Chapter 18, a member of Auxier Volunteer Fire Department, and the East Point Masonic Lodge.
He is survived by his wife, Ada White Caudill.
Other survivors include five daughters, Deanna Leslie of Chapmanville, W. V., Mary Reynolds of Glasgow, Ky, Tracey Hedrick, Angel Diddle and Jamie Caudill, all of Auxier, Ky.; one sister, Violet Caudill of Ohio; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Carl Caudill and Willis Sparks.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday, February 3, 2002, at 11:00 a.m., at the Auxier Free Will Baptist Church, with Bobby Joe Spencer and Roger Music officiating.
Burial was in the Highland Memorial Park, Staffordsville, Ky., under the direction of Jones-Preston Funeral Home.
Visitation was at the funeral home and at the church.
Clifford Martin
Clifford Martin, age 72, of Baltimore, Maryland, and formerly of Floyd County, passed away on January 24, 2002, after an extended illness.
He was born on January 29, 1929, at Bypro, Ky., the son of the late Milt and Ethel Martin.
He was a graduate of the Martin High School, and graduated from the Caney Junior College in 1949, (Alice Lloyd College), which was founded in 1923, to provide quality education to children of Appalachia.
He attended the University of Kentucky in 1950, and while in the United States Air Force, he attended the J.D., St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas. While in the U.S. Air Force, 1950-1953, he attained the level of Staff Sergeant. He was admitted to the Texas Bar in 1953, and to the Kentucky Bar in 1954, and began Law Practice in Prestonsburg, Ky. He moved his family to Maryland in 1955, where he was admitted to the Maryland Bar in 1957. He was an Insurance adjustor for Nationwide Insurance Co., and State Farm Insurance Co., 1955-1960. From 1960-2001, he operated a private law practice, (first three years in Reistertown, Md., and later in East Baltimore), general practitioner/trial lawyer with emphasis in criminal law, accident litigation and workers compensation.
He was once a partner with Glen Spradlin in the Hazard Gas Co.
He was a member of the Dundalk Optimist Club, East Baltimore Chamber of Commerce, American Bar Association, Maryland Bar Association, Maryland Trial Lawyers Association, Baltimore County Bar Association, Baltimore City Bar Association.
He is survived by one son, Daryll W. Martin of Phoenix, Md.; and two daughters, Maria Isabel Martin and Sandra Maria Martin of Baltimore, Md.; two sisters, Paulette Beatty of Jupiter, Florida, and Irene Meadows of Monticello, Kentucky.
He was preceded in death by one son, Winthrop Blair Martin.
At Mr. Martin’s request; a memorial fund was established at his alma mater, Alice Lloyd College in Pippa Passes, Ky. Contributions in his memory can be sent to Alice Lloyd College, 100 Purpose Rd., Pippa Passes, Kentucky 41844, in his name.
