Alka Bentley Johnson, 85, of Wheelwright, Ky., died Wednesday, February 6, 2002, following an extended illness.
Born on March 7, 1916, at Halo, Ky., she was the daughter of James and Cordella Hall Bentley. She was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Felix Johnson.
Survivors include two daughters, Glorida Jena Jones of McDowell, Ky., Alma June Eaton of Dayton, Ohio; three grandchildren, Keith Jones, Kelly Stephens, Joey Jones; and three great-grandchildren, Miranda Blackburn, Jeffrey Jones, and Steven Jones.
She was preceded in death by five brothers, Isom, John, Alvin McClellan, and two infant brothers; three sisters, Virgie, Maryland and Bessie Johnson.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, February 9, 2002, at 11 a.m., at the Wheelwright Freewill Baptist Church, with Louis Ferrari officiating.
Burial will be in the Bentley Cemetery, Bevinsville, Ky., under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, Ky.
Visitation is at the Wheelwright Freewill Baptist Church.
Celia Jane Burchwell Taylor
Celia Jane Burchwell Taylor, 83, of Auxier, Ky., died Sunday, February 3, 2002, at Highlands Regional Medical Center, following an extended illness.
Born November 18, 1918, in Van Lear, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Melvin Burchwell and Sarah Burchwell. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Auxier Freewill Baptist Church for 61 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Estill Taylor, who died December 28, 1985.
Survivors include four sons, Estill Eugene Taylor of Auxier, Ky., Walter Hobert Taylor and Larry Edmond Taylor, both of Prestonsburg, Ky., and Darl Taylor of Wabash, Ind.; three daughers, Judy Louise Howell of Louisville, Ky., Brenda Sue Holbrook and Kathy Holbrook, both of Auxier, Ky.; 14 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Oscar Paul Dean Taylor; two daughters, Patricia Ann Taylor, and Anita Taylor.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, February 6, 2002, at 11:00 a.m., at the Auxier Freewill Baptist Church, with Pastor Bobby Joe Spencer and Rev. Delmon Hayton officiating.
Burial will be in the Government Relocation Cemetery, Auxier, Ky., under the direction of Carter Funeral Home.
Visitation is at the church.
Pallbearers: Mark Holbrook, Rick Taylor, Scott Taylor, Darrin Taylor, Rodney Taylor, Bradley Taylor and Barry Butcher.
Clifton Steele
Clifton Steele, age 74, of Harold, Ky., husband of Edith B. Steele, passed away, Sunday, February 3, 2002, at his residence.
He was born September 8, 1927, in Honaker, Ky., son of the late Jim Steele and Martha Hamilton Steele. He was a retired auditor for Adams Construction Company. He was a teacher at Betsy Layne High School, a principal at Betsy Layne Elementary, graduated from Morehead State University, attended George Peabody College, Nashville, Tn., and served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1948.
In addition to his wife, Edith, he is survived by one daughter, Jane Ann Steele Roberts, and son-in-law, Ricky J. Roberts of Harold, Ky.; one brother, Lowell Steele of Pikeville, Ky.; one sister, Lackie O’Brien of Stanville, Ky.; one grandson, Cody Steele Roberts.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Clinton Steele.
Funeral services for Clifton Steele will be conducted Wednesday, February 6, 2002, at 1:00 p.m., at the Betsy Layne Church of Christ, Betsy Layne, Ky., with Clergyman Tommy Spears officiating.
Burial will follow in the Steele Family Cemetery, Harold, Ky., under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home, Martin, Ky.
Visitation is at the church.
Mousie Jane Jarrell Boyd
Mousie Jane Jarrell Boyd, age 93, of Dana, Ky., widow of Jim Boyd, passed away Thursday, January 31, 2002, at the Highlands Regional Medical Center, Prestonsburg, Ky.
She was born April 1, 1908, in Dana, Ky., the daughter of the late John B. Conn and Huldie Howell Boyd. She was homemaker and a charter member of the Little Salem Regular Baptist Church, Dana, Ky.
Survivors include one daughter, Myrtle Marian Hartley of Tampa, Fl.; one brother, Earnest Boyd of Dana, Ky.; three sisters, Nancy Wojtowicz of Warren, Mi., Rosa Owens of Hindman, Ky., and Virginia “Jennie” Jarrell of Banner, Ky.; 12 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, several great-great-grandcihldren.
In additon to her husband, and parents, she was preceded in death by one son, John B. Jarrell; three sisters, Hazel Boyd, Ada Wilson and Birdie Jarrell.
Funeral services for Mousie Jane Jarrell Boyd were conducted Sunday, February 3, 2002, at 11:00 a.m., in the Little Salem Regular Baptist Church, Dana, Ky., with the Regular Baptist ministers officiating.
Burial was in the Boyd Cemetery, Dana, Ky., under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home, Martin, Ky.
Visitation was at the church.

Alex Prater
Alex Prater, age 78, of Left Fork of Abbott, Prestonsburg, Ky., died Saturday, February 2, 2002, following an extended illness.
Born on June 12, 1923, at Brainard, Ky., he was the son of the late Riley Prater and Margaret Kilgore Prater.
He was a retired coal miner and a member of the U.M.W.A., as well as a member of the Chestnut Grove United Baptist Church, Prestonsburg, Ky.
He is survived by his wife, Velvia Watkins Prater; three sons, James Prater, Left Fork Abbott, Prestonsburg, Ky., Amos Prater, Right Fork Bull Creek, Prestonsburg, Ky., and Manis Prater, Left Fork Abbott, Prestonsburg, Ky.; four daughters, Ellavene Prater, Jolene Morgan, and Janice Prater, all of Left Fork Abbott, Prestonsburg, Ky., and Christine Bingham, of Litt Creek, Ky.; one brother, Charlie Prater, of Salyersville, Ky.; one sister, Mary Prater, of Prestonsburg, Ky.; one step-sister, Bessie Compton, of Spurlock, Prestonsburg, Ky.; 10 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one step-brother, Richard England; three sisters, Truly Prater, Mandy Jane Prater, and Birdie Prater; and one step-sister, Goldie Miller.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, February 5, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, Ky., with Elders Reuben Lycans, Wallace Calhoun, and Chester Adkins officiating.
Burial was at the Prater Family Cemetery, Abbott, Prestonsburg, Ky., under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, Ky.

Delta Watson
Delta Watson, 78, of Pippa Passes, passed away Sunday, January 20, 2002, at Hazard, following an extended illness.
She was born October 5, 1923, at Pippa Passes, the second daughter of the late Noah Watson and Victoria Slone Watson. Throughout her life, Delta worked as a homemaker and caretaker of others.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Hobert Watson, of Pippa Passes.
She has one living sister, Velva Hall, of Prestonsburg; and three brothers, Hassel Watson and Frank Watson, of Pippa Passes; and Harvey Watson, of Martin.
Burial was at the Noah and Victoria Watson Cemetery, Pippa Passes, January 23, 2002.
Dickie Ron Hall
Dickie Ron Hall, age 26, of Dwale, Ky., died Thursday, January 31, 2002, following an extended illness.
Born on February 24, 1974, at Prestonsburg, Ky., he was the son of Burley Hall, of Dwale, Ky., and Gladys Jarrell Hall, of Endicott, Ky.
He was disabled.
In addtition to his parents, he is survived by one sister, Lisa Hall, of Dwale, Ky.; grandparents, Dick Mosley, of Dwale, Ky., Ed Hall and Gertrude Hamilton Hall, of Prestonsburg, Ky., and Patsy Burchett Jarrell, of Buffalo, Ky.
He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Bossie Hamilton Mosley, and his grandfather, Chester (T.Y.) Jarrell.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday, February 3, 2002, at 1 p.m., at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, Ky., with Clergyman Woody Crum and others officiating.
Burial was in the Shepherd Family Cemetery, David, Ky., under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, Ky.
Visitation was at the funeral home.
