On December 19, 2002, in Paintsville, Ky., Lawrence Archie “Bud” Shafer, departed this life at the age of 82 years, and 17 days.
He was born in Charleston, West Virginia, December 2, 1920, to the late Lawrence Shafer Sr., and Bertha Bower Shafer.
On July 23, 1949, at Oil City, Pennsylvania, he married
Sara Ann Dickinson who survives his death.
Additionally is one son and one daughter, Lawrence Edward of Hollywood Florida; and Dr. Diane Shafer of Paintsville; also a granddaughter survives, Sara Teresa Shafer also of Paintsville; one brother and one sister survive additionally, Earl Shafer and Joan Gold Oaks, both of Oil City, Pennsylvania.
Bud was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. During his lifetime he had accomplished many good deeds and tasks by demonstrating his love and willingness to assist others by unselfishly giving of his knowledge and time.
Among his accomplishments, he was highly decorated while serving his country in the Air Force; while attending Yale University, he was honored with the Communication Commission; he served as a Boy Scout leader; Bud was a member of the Roseville Masonic Lodge; he was a member of the New Castle Consistery, Lodge of Perfection; his beautiful bass voice contributed to the Johnson County Senior Singers; he was a longtime member of the Mayo Methodist Church; after serving as a Chemical Engineer for Pennzoil Refinery for 40 years, he retired, but became the system manager of Dr. Diane Shafer’s office of Orthopaedics Surgery.
Bud died quietly at home with his wife of 53 years, and his daughter at his side. At his wish, he was laid to rest at the Wells-Buckingham Cemetery in a private graveside ceremony with Rev. Benny Bentrop, and with the choir singing Amazing Grace.
Services were cared for by Preston Funeral Home of Paintsville, Ky.
Billie Marie Stratton Wilson
Billie Marie Stratton Wilson, age 78, of Ivel, wife of the late Henry O. Wilson, passed away, Friday, December 27, 2002, in the Mountain View Health Care, Elkhorn City.
She was born November 11, 1924, in Ivel, the daughter of the late John Kelly Stratton and Bertha Lee Elliott Stratton. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include two sons, Gary Douglas Wilson of Celina, Ohio, and Henry O. Wilson III, of Banner; one daughter, Sharon Kay Goble of Harold; one brother, Wendell Stratton of Ivel; one sister, Peggy Blevins of Anniston, Alabama; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, and parents, she was preceded in death by one grandson; and 10 brothers and sisters.
Funeral services for Billie Marie Stratton Wilson were conducted Monday, December 30, at 11 a.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, with Clergyman Dennis Love officiating.
Burial was in the Stratton Cemetery, Ivel, under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home.
Visitation was at Hall Funeral Home.
Pallbearers: Doug Stratton, Doug Hicks, Bob Welch, Gary Wilson Jr., Dean Hammond, and John Keeton.
Honorary: Milton Ryan, Estill Goble, Grant Weddington Jr., and John Stratton.
Ruth Reffett Pitts
Ruth Reffett Pitts, 76, of Blue River, died Friday, December 27, 2002, at Our Lady of the Way Hospital in Martin.
Born October 7, 1926, in Pyramid, she was the daughter of the late Malcolm Reffett and Kathryn Miller Reffett. She was a homemaker and a member of the Dotson Church of God, at Prestonsburg.
She is survived by her husband, Shade Pitts.
Other survivors include one son, David Pitts of Martin; one daughter, Patricia Pitts of Blue River; two brothers, Carson Reffett of Pyramid, and Taylor Reffett of Winchester; and grandchildren, Keith Randall Pitts, Matthew Pitts, Travis Waylon Pitts, and Patrick Rufus Pitts.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five sons, Richard Pitts, Shade Randall Pitts, Clayton Pitts, Claude Pitts, and Frank Thomas Pitts; one infant daughter, Girl Pitts; one sister, Ruby Jean Reffett; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, December 30, at 1 p.m., at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, with Kenneth Prater Jr., and Roger Whitaker Jr., officiating.
Burial was in the Shade Pitts Cemetery at Blue River, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home.
Visitation was at the funeral home.
Philip E. Salisbury
1935-2002
Philip E. Salisbury, 67, of Campbell’s Branch Road, Catlettsburg, passed away Monday, December 2, 2002, in King’s Daughters’ Medical Center in Ashland.
Born on November 24, 1935, in Floyd County, he was a son of the late James William and Marie Stephens Salisbury. He graduated from Martin High School in Floyd County, received his post-secondary education from Morehead State University, with both undergraduate and graduate degrees in public school administration.
He fostered his community and countless students as an elementary school principal in the Boyd County School System. After retiring in 1995, he founded and operated Salisbury Antiques, until his passing.
Philip Salisbury leaves behind his wife of 44 years, Ada Lee Spradlin Salisbury; two children, a son, Greg Salisbury of Louisa; a daughter, Flecia S. Moore, and her husband, Kevin, of Catlettsburg; and one grandson, Christopher Salisbury of Louisa; three brothers, James David Salisbury, and his wife, Betty, of Catlettsburg, William Terry Salisbury, and his wife, Jackie, of Jackson, Michigan, and Timothy J. Salisbury, and his wife, Linda, of Printer; two sisters, Chady Louise Hardwick, and her husband, Tom, of Betsy Layne, and Judith Lillian Stewart of Fishers, Indiana; and a sister-in-law, Barbara Allen, of Prestonsburg.
Funeral ceremonies were conducted Wednesday, December 4, at 10 a.m., at the Catlettsburg United Methodist Church by the Rev. Bill Bentley.
Burial followed in the Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens of Ashland.
Maggie Hall Newman
Maggie Hall Newman, age 88, of Berea, Ky., formerly of McDowell, Ky., widow of Green B. Newman Jr., passed away Saturday, January 12, 2002, in the Norton Audubon Hospital, Louisville, Ky.
She was born August 28, 1913, in McDowell, Ky., the daughter of the late Duran Hall and Mary Spradlin Hall. She was a retired cook at McDowell High School, and a member of the Clear Creek United Baptist Church for 62 years.
Survivors include two sons, David Newman of Bardstown, Ky., Ira Dean Newman of Berea, Ky.; one daughter, Lavena Osborne of Louisville, Ky.; four sisters, Annie Stumbo of McDowell, Ky., Betty Vallone of Columbus, Ohio, Jeanie Frisco of Louisville, Ky., Edna Sizemore of Prestonsburg, Ky.; one brother, Willie F. Hall of Mason, Ohio, six grandchildren, one great-grandchild, two step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Clara Jo Newman.
Funeral services for Maggie Hall Newman will be conducted Wednesday, January 16, 2002, at 11:00 a.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, Ky., with the clergyman, Ruben Lykens, officiating.
Burial will follow in the Newman Cemetery, Hi Hat, Ky., under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home.

Herschel B. Flanery
Herschel B. Flanery, age 65, of Langley, Ky., husband of Betty Stratton Flanery, passed away, Friday morning, January 11, 2002, at the Pikeville Methodist Hospital, Pikeville, Ky.
He was born September 9, 1936, the son of the late William Ray Flanery and Alva May Flanery, of Langley, Ky. He was a deacon at the First Baptist Church, Martin, Ky., a founding member of the Maytown Volunteer Fire Department, a former Floyd County Math teacher, a retired Land Manager for Columbia Gas Transmission Corporation in Charleston, West Virginia, and a member of John W. Hall Lodge 950, F&AM, Martin, Ky. He served in the U.S. Navy for three years.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, William Herschel Flanery of Dallas, Texas; two grandsons, William Michael Flanery and David Heath Flanery of Tulsa, Ok.; and one sister, Mary Jo Halbert of Martin, Ky.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Phillip Ray Flanery; one sister, Gloria Flanery Jones, and one brother, Thomas Ray Flanery, all of Langley, Ky.
Funeral services for Herschel Flanery were conducted Sunday, January 13, 2002, at 1:30 p.m., in the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, with Brother Graydon Howard officiating.
Burial followed in the Davidson Memorial Gardens, at Ivel, Ky.
Visitation was Saturday, January 12, 2002. Masonic rites were conducted Saturday, January 12, in the Hall Funeral Home Chapel.

Frank Martin
Frank Martin, 69, of Garrett, Ky., died Wednesday, January 9, 2002, following a brief illness.
Born on December 29, 1932, in Knott County, Ky., he was the son of the late Fred Martin Sr., and Ada Hall Martin. He was a self-employed station owner.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Billie Jean Bailey Martin.
Survivors include three brothers, Afton Martin of Hamilton, Oh., Fred Martin Jr., of Lackey, Ky., Tandy Martin of Dayton, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Nancy Lee Gibson and Nadine Woods.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, January 13, 2002, at 11 a.m., at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, Ky., with Jerry Manns and others, officiaiting.
