Catherine A. Redd, 49, of Prestonsburg, died Tuesday, February 18, 2003, at her residence.
Born April 17, 1953, in Lexington, she was the daughter of Phyllis Anderson Hornbaker and step-father, Joe Hornbaker of Prestonsburg, and the late Dr. Harold Redd Jr. She was an attorney; member of the Floyd County Bar Association; Kentucky Bar Association; and a member of the First Christian Church at Paintsville.
In addition to her mother and step-father, she is survived by two sisters, Jane Redd of Cincinnati, Ohio and Margaret Redd of Lexington; sister-in-law, Denise Wooton Redd of Hazard; a niece, Rebecca Redd, and a nephew, Robert Redd, both of Hazard.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a brother, James A. Redd.
Memorial services will be conducted Saturday, March 1, at 3 p.m., at the St. James Episcopal Church in Prestonsburg, with the Reverend Johnnie R. Ross officiating.
Burial, in the Lexington Cemetery, in Lexington, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin.
Verniece “Granny” Stamper
Verniece “Granny” Stamper, age 81, of Martin, the widow of Sam Stamper, passed away on Sunday, February 16, 2003, at her residence.
She was born March 26, 1921, at McDowell, the daughter of the late Milford and Puss Martin Hall.
She was a self-employed beautician, and was a member of the Martin Methodist Church.
She is survived by one daughter, Judy Marshall of Martin; one granddaughter, Gina Scott of Danville; and one great-grandson, Ian Scott of Danville.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, February 19, at 1 p.m., in the Hall Funeral Home Chapel in Martin, with Roy Harlow officiating.
Burial was in the Davidson Memorial Gardens at Ivel, under direction of Hall Funeral Home.
Pallbearers: Tommy Hall, John Hall Jr., Tony Elam, Ray Allen, Joe Scott, Ian Scott and Don Marshall.
Mable Thornsberry Tuttle
Mable Thornsberry Tuttle, age 78, of McDowell, wife of the late L.C. Tuttle, passed away Saturday, February 22, 2003, in the McDowell Appalachian Regional Hospital.
She was born May 6, 1924, in Knott County, the daughter of the late Kanhawah Thornsberry and Dona Slone Thornsberry. She was a member of the Little Rosa Regular Baptist Church, at McDowell.
Survivors include three daughters, Judith (Jim) Dennett of Jackson, Ohio, Bonnie Horvath and Linda (Willie) Elliott both of McDowell; two sons, Jackie (Judy) Thornsberry of McDowell, and Sammie (Theresa) Thornsberry of Garden City, Michigan; step-daughter, May Zada Hall of Georgia; five step-sons, Odis Lee (Brenda) Tuttle of Bucyrus, Ohio, Donald (Alice) Tuttle of Monroe, Michigan, Ronnie (Ethel) Tuttle of Mansfield, Ohio, Garnett (Loretta) Tuttle of Wayne, Michigan, and Gary Tuttle of Michigan; two brothers, Louis Thornsberry of Hollybush, Earl Thornsberry of Garner; 25 grandchildren, and 27 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Jeff Thornsberry; one step-son, Odell Tuttle; one daughter, Kathy Lee Thorns-bury; six brothers, Ernie, Elmo, Ellis, Kanhawah Jr., Bert and Ed Thornsberry.
Funeral services for Mable Thornsberry Tuttle were conducted Tuesday, February 25, at 11 a.m., at the Little Rosa Regular Baptist Church, at McDowell, with elders Clinton Moore, Jimmy Hall, and others, officiating.
Burial followed in the Thornsberry Cemetery, Mullins Branch, at Kite, under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home, Martin.
Visitation was at the Little Rosa Regular Baptist Church.
Pallbearers: Ryan Elliott, Tim Tuttle, Charles Hall, Shaun Tuttle, Gary Tuttle, and Jeff Thornsberry.
Sara Stapleton
Sara Stapleton, 90, of Rogers-ville, Alabama, formerly of Pleasant Lake, Michigan, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2003, at Athens Convalescent Care Home.
She was born on November 9, 1912, in Floyd County, the daughter of John H. and Jenny Hyden. Sara had lived in the area for the past eight years, living with her son. She attended Young’s Chapel in Waterloo, Alabama, and enjoyed quilting and crocheting.
Survivors include one son, Carson Stapleton of Rogersville, Alabama; a daughter, Naomi Ruth Spooner of Angier, North Carolina; 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Darwin Boyer of Pleasant Lake, Michigan.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hudson R. Stapleton; one son, Loran K. Hyden; one daughter, Gladys DePlanche; three sisters, and one brother.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, February 22, at 1 p.m., from the Caskey-Mitchell Funeral Home, Stockbridge, Michigan, with Brother Paul Holloway officiating.
Burial was in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery.
Visitation was at the funeral home.

Josephine Dickerson Meadows
Josephine Dickerson Mea-dows, 91, of Burke Avenue, Prestonsburg, died Wednesday, February 19, 2003, at the Highlands Regional Medical Center.
Born July 5, 1911, in Prestonsburg, she was the daughter of the late Zebrum Slusher and Bertha Alley Dickerson. She was a former salesperson at Francis Shoe Store, and was a member of the Community United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Brack Meadows, on September 21, 1971.
Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Halfhill, and Mary Jo Meade, both of Prestonsburg; one son, Charles Dudley Meadows of Monticello; one brother, Z.S. Dickerson Jr., of Harrisonburg, Virginia; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, February 22, at 1 p.m., at the Community United Methodist Church, with Rev. Steve Pescosolido officiating.
Interment will be in the Davidson Memorial Gardens, at Ivel, under direction of Carter Funeral Home.
Visitation is Friday, 4 p.m., until 9 p.m., at the funeral home.

James Wesley Blackburn
James Wesley Blackburn, 68, of Prestonsburg, passed away Friday, February 14, 2003, at Pikeville Methodist Hospital, following an extended illness.
He was born September 24, 1934, at Endicott, a son of the late Daniel Webster Blackburn and Minnie (Curtis) Blackburn. He was retired from Vance Volkswagen, where he worked as a mechanic.
He is survived by his wife, Frankie (Webb) Blackburn.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include one son, Rickie Blackburn of Prestonsburg; and one daughter, Crystal Butler of Prestonsburg; one brother, Allen Blackburn of Ohio; two sisters, Anna Belle Goble and Cora Grunden, both of Ohio; four grandchildren, Leslie (Chuck) Rowe, Jason (Shera) Blackburn, Zack Butler, and Kaitlyn Butler; and one great-grandchild, Nate Blackburn.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, February 17, at noon, at Burke Funeral Home, Prestonsburg, with Rev. David Garrett officiating.
Burial was in the Gethsemane Gardens, Auxier Road, Prestonsburg, under direction of Burke Funeral Home.
Visitation was at the funeral home.
Maxine Bays Allen
Maxine Bays Allen, 79, of Garrett, died Wednesday, February 19, 2003, at the Highlands Regional Medical Center, Prestonsburg.
Born on July 12, 1923, in Garrett, she was the daughter of the late Hugh and Grace Wicker Bays. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church at Garrett.
She was the wife of Hollie Allen for 57 years.
Other survivors include a daughter, Sharon Allen Whitfield, of Northport, Alabama.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Thom J. Whitfield; and two brothers, Bill Bays and Joe Wheeler Bays; and one sister, Jean Lyons.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, February 21, at 11 a.m., at Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, in Martin, with Larry Adams officiating.
Burial will be in the Davidson Memorial Gardens, at Ivel.
Visitation is at the funeral home.

James (Red) Adkins
James (Red) Adkins, 82, of Prestonsburg, died Thursday, February 20, 2003, at the Highlands Regional Medical Center, Prestonsburg.
Born December 23, 1920, at Wayland, he was the son of of the late Frank and Oma Reese Adkins. He was a disabled coal operator; a member of Masonic Lodge No. 889 of Wheelwright; a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason; an Oleika Shriner; and a member of the Southern Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Gertrude Ratliff Adkins.
Other Survivors include two sons, James Adkins Jr., of California; and Michael Adkins of Dwale; two daughters, Clevetta Boyd of Langley; and Elisha Stewart Calhoun of Prestonsburg; a brother, Clyde Adkins of Georgia; two sisters, Betty Adkins of Missouri, and Ruth Adkins of New York; six grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Imal Morrison and Mary Bailey.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, February 22, at noon, at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home in Martin, with John Dixon officiating.
Burial will be in the Ratliff Cemetery at Regina, under direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home.
Visitation is Friday, at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.
