Harold D. Bates, 64, of Chicago, Illinois, formerly of Floyd County, died Friday, February 14, 2003, at the Illinois Masonic Hospital.
Born January 13, 1939, in Knott County, he was the son of the late Carl and Viola Sawyers Bates. He was a machinist.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred L. Hess Bates.
Other survivors include a son, Harold D. Bates Jr. (wife, Sissy) of Lexington; two daughters, Cherly L. Bates Halas (husband, Jerry) of Cary, Illinois, and Lisa A. (Angel) Bates of Chicago, Illinois; two brothers, J.C. Bates and Charles Wayne (Bo) Bates, both of Bevinsville; two sisters, Betty Meade of Hi Hat, and Jean Horn of Weeksbury; five grandchildren, Michelle Proctor, Brandon Bates, Kyle Bates, Angela Vazquez, and Angelika Vazquez; and one great-grandchild, Annette Addimando.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth (Bunny) Bates.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, February 22, at 11 a.m., at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home in Martin, with Delmas Johnson, and others, officiating.
Burial will be in the Bates Cemetery at Dry Creek, in Topmost.
Visitation is at the funeral home.
Amos Vaughn
Amos Vaughn, 79, of Dwale, passed away Sunday, February 16, 2003, at the Highland Regional Medical Center in Prestonsburg.
He was born August 21, 1923, at Dwale, the son of the late Edward and Susan Campbell Vaughn. His occupation was that of a mason and carpenter. He was a member of the Church of Christ at Arkansas Creek, Martin.
He is survived by his wife, Pauline (Bradley) Vaughn.
Other survivors include two sons, Walter Vaughn of Dwale, and Steven Vaughn of Allen; seven daughters, Doreka Vaughn, and Luci Lafferty, both of Dwale, Dedra Vaughn, Carolyn Goble, and Jerry Cornette, all of Prestonsburg, Regina Mullins of Sidney, and Janelle Carver of Mt. Juliet, Tennessee; 13 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 19, at 1 p.m., at the Burke Funeral Home, Prestonsburg, with Rev. Jack Howard officiating.
Burial will be at the Dwale Community Cemetery.
All arrangements are under direction of Burke Funeral Home.
Visitation is at the funeral home.
Active pallbearers are Tom Mullins, Rod Lafferty, Matt Hall, James Clay, Ershel Ray Vaughan, and James Taylor.
Florence Lewis
Florence Lewis, age 86, of Harold, passed away Sunday, February 16, 2003, at the Highlands Regional Medical Center, Prestonsburg.
She was born March 13, 1916, in Floyd County, the daughter of the late Wallace Lewis and Rosie Bell Roop Lewis. She was a former employee of Reynolds Metal Company, Louisville.
Survivors include four nephews, Willis Lewis and Dewey Lewis, both of Prestonsburg, Thurman Lewis of Banner, and William Bruce Lewis of Wonder Lake Illinois; three nieces, Eleanor Lewis Goble and Rebecca Lewis Goble, both of Prestonsburg, and Patricia Duncan of Schaumburg, Illinois; and one sister, Ada Lewis of Glasgow.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Gram Lewis and Malcolm Lewis, and one sister, Eveline Lewis Porter.
Funeral services for Florence Lewis will be conducted Thursday, February 20, at 1 p.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, with Clergyman Gordon Fitch officiating.
Burial will follow in the Davidson Memorial Gardens, at Ivel, under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home.
Visitation is at the funeral home.
Mary Elizabeth Burchett Goble
Mary Elizabeth Burchett Goble, 90, of Cow Creek Road, Prestonsburg, died Friday, February 14, 2003, at her residence.
Born April 20, 1912, in McCombs, she was the daughter of the late William Sherman Burchett and Dixie Clark Burchett. She was a homemaker and member of the Cow Creek Freewill Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Isaac (Ike) Goble, who died November 9, 1985.
Survivors include five daughters, Patsy Leslie and Janice Puckett, both of Prestonsburg, Dixie Frasure of Winchester, Gypsy Hicks of David, and Peachie Childers of Barboursville, West Virginia; four sons, William G. Goble of Tecumseh, Michigan, James Goble of Howell, Michigan, and John Goble and Phillip Goble, both of Prestonsburg.
She was preceded in death by one son, Paul E. Goble.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, February 18, at 1 p.m., at the Carter Funeral Home Chapel, Prestonsburg, with Rev. Nathan Lafferty officiating.
Interment was in the Goble Family Cemetery, Cow Creek, Prestonsburg.

Jeannie Denice Hughes
Jeannie Denice Hughes, age 25, of Hueysville, passed away on Saturday, February 15, 2003, in the St. Joseph Hospital, in Lexington.
She was born November 4, 1977, in Floyd County, the daughter of Arthur and Virginia Hicks Hughes of Hueysville.
She was a graduate of Allen Central High School, and attended Pikeville College. She was a member of the Drift Pentecostal Church.
Survivors, other than her parents, include one son, Arthur Jordan Taylor Hughes of Hueysville; one daughter, Virginia Hope Alexandra Hughes of Hueysville; one sister, Tabatha L. Hughes of Hueysville; and a host of other family members and friends.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, February 18, at 1 p.m., in the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, in Martin, with Ted Shannon and Mitchell Shepherd officiating.
Burial was in the Hughes Family Cemetery at Hueysville, under the professional care of Hall Funeral Home.

Sarah Elizabeth Spradlin Goble
Sarah Elizabeth Spradlin Goble, 89, of Westminster Street, Prestonsburg, died Sunday, February 16, 2003, at the Highlands Regional Medical Center. She was a former director of volunteers at Highlands Regional Medical Center.
Born May 10, 1913, in Roanoke, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Sherrid Spradlin and Cordelia Stewart Spradlin. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Prestonsburg, and a lifetime member of the Prestonsburg Womans Club.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Y. (Sonny) Goble, who died April 3, 1988.
Survivors include one sister, Otela Smiley of Lexington; one granddaughter, Paula M. Layne of Prestonsburg; one great-granddaughter, Heather Ousley of Prestonsburg; one great-grandson, David Allen Layne II; one great-great-grandson, David Allen Layne III; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Patricia Sue Goble Martin (died June 12, 2000); and one brother, Charles Spradlin.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, February 20, at 1 p.m., at the First Presbyterian Church, with Rev. George Love officiating.
Interment will be in the Richmond Memorial Cemetery, Prestonsburg, under direction of Carter Funeral Home, Prestonsburg.
Visitation is 1 p.m. until 9 p.m., Wednesday.
John Wesley Blackburn
John Wesley Blackburn, 68, of Prestonsburg, passed away Friday, February 14, 2003, at Pikeville Methodist Hospital, following an extended illness.
He was born September 24, 1934, at Endicott, a son of the late Daniel Webster Blackburn and Minnie (Curtis) Blackburn. He was retired from Vance Volkswagen, where he worked as a mechanic.
He is survived by his wife, Frankie (Webb) Blackburn.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include one son, Rickie Blackburn of Prestonsburg; and one daughter, Crystal Butler of Prestonsburg; one brother, Allen Blackburn of Ohio; two sisters, Anna Belle Goble and Cora Grunden, both of Ohio; four grandchildren, Leslie (Chuck) Rowe, Jason (Shera) Blackburn, Zack Butler, and Kaitlyn Butler; and one great-grandchild, Nate Blackburn.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, February 17, at noon, at Burke Funeral Home, Prestonsburg, with Rev. David Garrett officiating.
Burial was in the Gethsemane Gardens, Auxier Road, Prestonsburg, under direction of Burke Funeral Home.
Visitation was at the funeral home.
James Brent Reed
James Brent Reed, age 42, of Cincinnati, Ohio, husband of Brenda Reed, formerly of Floyd County, passed away on Saturday, February 15, 2003, in the Hospice Care Center of Cincinnati.
He was born May 11, 1960, in Lexington, the son of James L. “Jim” Reed and Shelby Calton Reed of Lexington.
He was an account representative for Horace-Mann Insurance Co., a veteran of the Gulf War, and was a member of the Drift Presbyterian Church.
Survivors, other than his parents and wife, include his maternal grandfather, Hargis Calton of Palm Bay, Florida; one daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Reed of Cincinnati, Ohio; one brother, Robert Alan (Edith) Reed of San Diego, California; two sisters, Janet (David) Johnson of Pippa Passes, and Deborah Ann Reed of Lexington; three nephews, Christopher Stumbo, Robert Reed and C.J. Davis; two nieces, Rebecca Reed and Kaitlyn Reed.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, February 18, at 3 p.m., in the Hall Funeral Home Chapel at Martin, with Sally Miller officiating.
Burial was in the Davidson Memorial Gradens at Ivel, under the professional care of Hall Funeral Home.
