Sterling Smith Jr.
Sterling Smith Jr., age 54, of Ivel, Ky., husband of Juanita “Tootsie” Martin Smith, passed away Saturday, May 5, 2001, of injuries suffered in an auto accident.
Born October 8, 1946, in Pikeville, Ky., he was the son of Ellen Morley Smith of Harold, and the late Sterling Smith. He was a member of the International Church of God, and an employee of Pepsi Cola for 28 years.
In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by three sons, Sterling Jordan Smith of Ivel, Ky., Jonah Duane Smith of Varney, Ky., and William Derrick “D.D.” Smith of Millard, Ky.; three sisters, Nell Mae Mills of Warren, Michigan, Flora Gay Abshire of Lick Creek, Ky., and Francis Lucille Marsee of Westland, Michigan; and two grandchildren, Tiffany MeShae and Tasha Nicole Smith.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one brother, Billy Lee Smith.
Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, May 10, 2001, at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, Ky., with George Trent officiating.
Burial was in the Highland Memorial Park, Staffordsville, Ky.
Visitation was at the funeral home.
Pallbearers were Andrew Walters, David Martin, Brad Martin, Brian Marsee, Scott Williams, Marc Smith, Jason Smith, and Donnie Burke.

Isom B. Slone
Isom B. Slone, 54, of Wayland, Kentucky, died Friday, May 4, 2001, at his residence, following an extended illness.
Born on April 15, 1974, in Knott County, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Cephas and Lucinda Slone. He was disabled.
Survivors include two brothers, Carlie Slone of Prestonsburg, Kentucky; Silas Slone of Hueysville, Kentucky; one brother is deceased; three sisters survive, Lydia Shepherd of Hueysville, Kentucky; Debra Niece of Hueysville, Kentucky; Amy Whitaker of Martin, Kentucky; one sister is deceased.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, May 7, 2001, at 1 p.m., at the Garrett Community Christian Church, with Donnie Hackworth, Allen Chaffins, and others, officiating.
Burial was in the Porter Cemetery, Jones Fork, Lackey, Kentucky, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, Kentucky.
Visitation was at the church.

Madge Prater
Madge Prater, age 82, of Eastern, widow of Jim “Dock” Prater, died Saturday, May 5, 2001, in Our Lady of the Way Hospital, Martin.
She was born April 7, 1919, at Hueysville, Kentucky, the daughter of the late Lee Henry and Martha Prater. She was a homemaker and member of the Salt Lick Community Church of Hueysville, Kentucky.
She is survived by two sons, Herbert Dale and Zeb Prater of Eastern, Kentucky; four daughters, Loretta Levingston of Belleville, Ohio, Nora Hoover of Eastern, Kentucky, Sally Woodrum of Langley, Kentucky, and Myrtle King of Eastern Kentucky; three sisters, Ada Hurst of Greenup, Kentucky, Edna Hurst of Greenup, Kentucky, and Maggie Lamba of Nevada; one sister-in-law, Maxie Patton of Hippo, Kentucky; 12 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, May 7, at 11 a.m., in the Salt Lick Community Church, at Hueysville.
Burial was in the Prater Cemetery, at Hueysville.
Visitation was Saturday at the church.

Luther “Big Bud” Bowling
Luther “Big Bud” Bowling, 75, of 1474 W. 550 S. Warren, Indiana, died at 9:13 p.m. on Sunday, May 6, 2001, at Huntington Memorial Hospital. Mr. Bowling worked as a foreman at Imco for many years. He retired in 1970. He loved to fish and enjoyed woodworking, especially building rocking chairs and log cabin birdhouses.
He was born on March 3, 1926 in Auxier, Kentucky, a son of Mance and Lula Hunt Bowling. He was united in marriage to Helen J. Kaylor on December 20, 1952, in Huntington. His wife survives.
Additional survivors include two sons, Steven N. Bowling and Tristen L. Bowling, both of Warren, Indiana; five daughters, Helen Frances of Decatur, Mrs. Russell (Jeanie) Freestone, Mrs. Jimmy (Trilyn) Asher, Mrs. John (Karleen) Shultz-Herring all of Warren, Mrs. James (Cheri) Britten of Huntington; two brothers, James Bolding of Warren, Emory Bolding of Huntington; two sisters, Audrey Whitt and Angie Mayo both of Garrett, Kentucky, ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sons, James L. Bowling and Cris Bowling and two brothers, Claude Bolding and Clyde Bolding.
Visitation was Tuesday, May 8, 2001, at the Myers Funeral Home Huntington Chapel, 2901 Guilford Street, Huntington, Indiana.
Services will be held on Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at 11 a.m., at the Myers Funeral Home Huntington Chapel with Pastor Elzie Spencer officiating.
Interment will be at the Gardens of Memory Cemetery, Huntington County.

In addition to his father, he is preceded in death by one brother, Billy Lee Smith.
Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Thursday, May 10, 2001, at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, Kentucky with George Trent officiating.
Burial will follow in the Highland Memorial Park, Staffordsville, Kentucky.
Visitation is at the funeral home.
Pallbearers: R.J. Prater, Tommy Miller, B.J. Prater, Chris Stumbo, Ronnie Stumbo, Richard Levinston, and Mooch Levingston.

James Edward “Doodle” Davidson
James Edward “Doodle” Davidson, age 57, of Madison, Ohio, formerly of Drift, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, May 1, 2001, at the Lake West County Hospital, Willoughby, Ohio.
He was born December 25, 1943, in Drift, Kentucky, the son of Virginia Davidson Artrip and Carlos Artrip, of Martin, Kentucky. Mr. Davidson was a retired engineer for Barnes Inc., Cleveland, Ohio, for 37 years and a Kentucky Colonel since July 3, 1989.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Maria Nina Davidson; one son, Michael Shawn Davidson of Phoenix, Arizona; two stepdaughters, Laura and Deborah Pildner of Madison, Ohio; one brother, Gary Artrip of Martin, Kentucky; and three sisters, Jerry Ann Campbell of Prestonsburg, Kentucky, Sharon Jones of Martin, Kentucky, and Sheila Wright of Presonsburg, Kentucky; aunts and uncles are Grover Dean Davidson of Painesville, Ohio, Ronnie Davidson of Ormond Beach, Florida, Howard Davidson of North Carolina, Georgia Howell of New London, and Fonetta Bentley of Geneva, Ohio.
He is also preceded in death by Robert and Lucy Mae Campbell Davidson, grandparents, and one aunt, Bobbie Jean Giacomelli.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Sunday, May 6, 2001, at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, Kentucky, with Ted Shannon officiating.
Burial will follow in the Drift Cemetery, Drift, Kentucky, under the care of Hall Funeral Home.
Visitation is from 5-10:00 p.m., Friday, and noon to 10:00 p.m., Saturday, at the funeral home.
Active pallbearers: Chris Caudill, Jimmy Campbell, Jimmy Artrip, Shawn Wright, Robert Davidson, Donnie Zukowski, Robert Davidson III, and Jarrad Arnett.
Honorary pallbearers: Ken Hall, Delmer Hall, Tommy Hall, Donnie Hall, Dale Hall, and Donald Shannon.

Ernie Clay Tackett
Ernie Clay Tackett, 25, of Grethel, Kentucky, died Tuesday, May 1, 2001, at McDowell Appalachian Regional Medical Center, following a sudden illness.
Born on March 2, 1976, at Pikeville, Kentucky, he was the son of Acie Tackett and Ella Ruth Evans Tackett, of Grethel, Kentucky.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Azzie and Goldie Newsome Tackett.
Survivors include his maternal grandparents, Butler and Ethel Hamilton Evans of Grethel, Kentucky; and one brother, Kelly R. Tackett of Columbus, Ohio.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, May 4, 2001, at 12:30 p.m., at his residence at Grethel, Kentucky, with ministers of the Old Regular Baptist Church officiating.
Burial will be in the Newsome Cemetery, Mink Branch, Craynor, Kentucky, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, Kentucky.
Visitation is at the residence at Grethel.
