Dawsie Handshoe, 78, of Hueysville, died Friday, April 13, 2001, at Our Lady of the Way Hospital, Martin, following an extended illness.
Born on February 9, 1923, at Knott County, she was the daughter of the late Andy and Gracie Handshoe Terry. She was a member of the United Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Handshoe.
Survivors include eight sons, Jesse James Handshoe of Avilla, Indiana, Amos Handshoe of Carrie, Roy Handshoe, Leonard Handshoe, Larry Junior Handshoe, Willie Lee Handshoe, Elmer Handshoe, and Lloyd Dean Handshoe all of Hueysville; five daughters, Essie Terry, Bessie Handshoe, Cordellia Handshoe, Tressie Handshoe, Arminta Handshoe all of Hueysville; two brothers, Taulby Ray Terry of Tome City, Indiana, Chandler Terry of Kendallville, Indiana; 13 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, April 17, at 1 p.m., at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, with Wayne Stephens, Clarence Combs, and Bethel Bolen officiating.
Burial was in the Will Terry Cemetery, at Hueysville.
Doffie Henderson
Doffie Henderson, 51, of Craynor, died Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at Pikeville Methodist Hospital, following an extended illness.
Born on June 12, 1949, in Floyd County, he was the son of Henry Henderson of McDowell, and the late Girlie Howell Henderson. He was a disabled coal miner, and a member of the Little Rosa Old Regular Baptist Church of the New Salem Association.
He is survived by his wife, Burblene Hall Henderson.
Other survivors include one son, Jamie Henderson of Craynor; two daughters, Thedia Hamilton of Lenoir, North Carolina, Joella Newsome of Beaver; two brothers, Don Henderson of Josephine, Texas, Eddie Henderson of McDowell; one sister, Deloris Blevins of McDowell; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, April 13, at noon, at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, with ministers of the Old Regular Baptist Church officiating.
Burial will be in the Henderson Family Cemetery, at Craynor.
Joe Edward Ball
Joe Edward Ball, 66, of Lexington, died Monday, April 9, 2001.
He was born in Prestonsburg on December 15, 1934, the son of John Elder and Mae Bailey Ball. He served in the United States Armed Forces in Fort Hood, Texas, from 1957-1959. He was actively involved in coaching and teaching the youth for Southeastern Bambino Baseball.
He was employed for 18 years as a sales representative for Louisville Chemical Company, in Lexington, and retired in 1999, and returned to part-time employment for Transylvania University Physical Plant Department that same year.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Ann Daniels Ball.
Other survivors include one daughter, JoAnna Brooks Ball of Lexington and one son, Bill Ball of Nicholasville, and a brother, Sidney E. Ball of Lincoln Park, Michigan and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, April 13, at the W.R. Milward Mortuary Southland, with Reverend Jack Hughes Robinson officiating.
Laura Hamilton
Laura Hamilton, 95, of New London, died Wednesday, April 11, at her home.
She was born December 5, 1905, in Floyd County, the daughter of the late Ireland and Nan Robinson Boyd. She had lived in New London since 1952. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of New London.
She is survived by four daughters, Mae Williams of New London, Carlie Jarrell of Sterling Heights, Michigan, Nancy Harris of Ashland, and Juanita Case of Fremont; two sons, J.D. Hamilton and Edward Hamilton, both of New London; 35 grandchildren, 78 great-grandchildren and 22 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, April 14, 10 a.m., at the First Baptist Church of New London, with Alan Seaborn and Hershel Case officiating.
Burial will be in the Ashland County Memorial Park, under the direction of Eastman Funeral Home.
Ralph Caudill
Ralph Caudill, 75, of Melvin, died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at the McDowell Appalachian Regional Hospital, following an extended illness.
Born on December 25, 1925, in Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Johnny and Maxie Lawson Caudill. He was a retired coal miner, a member of the U.M.W.A. Local No. 5899 at Wheelwright, a member of the Light House Temple at Wheelwright, and a World War II veteran of the United States Navy.
He is survived by his wife, Reva Fitzpatrick Caudill.
Other survivors include one son, Glennis Caudill of Melvin; four brothers, Eddie Edward Caudill of Price, Jack Caudill of Mt. Vernon, Illinois, Bennie Caudill of Columbia City, Indiana, Jim Caudill of Caledonia, Mississippi; four sisters, Dixie Mullins of Columbia City, Indiana, Dorothy Hand of Eden, North Carolina, Mary Hamilton of London, Maudie Osborne of Hi Hat; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, April 14, at 11 a.m., at the Church of God of Prophecy, at Hi Hat, with Don Fraley Jr. and Roy Cosby officiating.
Burial will be in the Harris Cemetery, at Melvin, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin.
Alpha Burke
Alpha Burke, 82, of Franklin, died Thursday, April 5, 2001, at Greenview Regional Hospital in Bowling Green, following an extended illness.
Born on November 30, 1918, at Knott County, she was the daughter of the late James Albert and Melvenia McCurry Johnson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Garfield Burke.
Survivors include four sons, James Ellis Hall of Rock Creek, Ohio, Curtis Lee Hall of Conneaut, Ohio, Roger Burke of Holiday, Florida, Raymond Burke of Jacks Creek; two step-sons, Ronald Burke of Raiford, Florida, Omar Hall of Ashtabula, Ohio; two daughters, Joan Becker of Chester, Virginia, Joyce Ann Jenson of Franklin; three step-daughters, Joan Hall of Florahome, Florida, Joyce Allen of Jacksonville, Florida, Becky Little of Jonancy; five brothers, Willie Johnson of Indiana, Kennith Johnson of Wheelwright, Jack Johnson of Casper, Wyoming, Jessie Johnson of Emma, Garfield Johnson of Bevinsville, 29 grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday, April 8, at 11 a.m., at the Little Rock Old Regular Baptist Church, with ministers of the Old Regular Baptist Church officiating.
Burial was in the Family Cemetery, at Halo, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin.
David Williams
David Williams, 35, of Olive Hill, died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at his residence, following a sudden illness.
Born on March 1, 1966, at Cleveland, Ohio, he was the son of Willie Williams of Grethel, and Loretta Conley Adams of Galveston. He was an installer for TELA Communications.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Perry Williams.
Other survivors include three step-sons, Kevin Watson, Dennis Watson, and Adam Watson, all of Olive Hill; three daughters, Kimberly Williams of Olive Hill, Edna Shrie Williams and Deonna Williams, both of Craynor; one step-daughter, Lisa Sparks of Morehead; two brothers, Kennel Williams of North Webster, Indiana, Robert Dale Williams of Carisle; step-father, Jay Lee Adams of Galveston; paternal grandmother, Ethel Williams of Grethel; and two step-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, April 12, at 11 a.m., at the Zion Old Regular Baptist Church, at Grethel, with ministers of the Old Regular Baptist Church officiating.
Burial will be in the Evans Cemetery, at Grethel, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin.
Geraldine Allen
Geraldine Allen, 82, of Eastern, died Friday, April 6, 2001, at the McDowell Appalachian Regional Hospital.
She was born October 12, 1919, at Eastern, the daughter of the late Schulyer Colfax and Rhoda Preston Allen. She was a teacher at Garrett and Maytown schools, and principal at Lackey school from 1938, until her retirement in 1974.
Survivors include two sisters, Corinne Allen of Eastern, and Barbara Worth Carter of Lexington.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, April 7, at 2 p.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, with Mike Allen officiating.
Burial was in the Allen Family Cemetery, at Eastern.
Pallbearers were Brett James, Bryan Allen and Bennett Allen.
