Gene Crass, 74, a resident of LaFollette, Tennessee, and formerly of Prestonsburg, died Saturday, October 14, 2000, at Ft. Sanders Medical Center, Knoxville.
Born on March 30, 1926, in Bonnie Blue, Virginia, he lived in LaFollette most of his adult life. He was a former co-owner and operator of Worldwide Equipment Company of Prestonsburg. He was a member of the Irene Cole Baptist Church of Prestonsburg. He was also a member of the John Hall Masonic Lodge of Martin, the Shriners and Scottish Rite of Campbell County, the Scottish Rite, York Rite and the Kerbela Tample of Knoxville. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII.
He is survived by his wife, Alma Lou Crass of LaFollette.
Other survivors include two daughters, Valerie Wheeler of Lexington, Paula Linginfelter of Lenoir City; one son, Jeffrey Crass of Los Angeles, California; one step-son, Kenny Shaffer of West Virginia; one brother, Clarence O'Neil Crass of LaFollette; one sister, Barbara Lockett of Oliver Springs, Tennessee, and four grandchildren and five step-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, October 18, at 8 p.m. in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home with Rev. Wayne McMillan and Rev. Malcomb King officiating.
Sharp Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Clarence Burke
Clarence Burke, 68, of Wheelwright, died Sunday, October 15, 2000, at McDowell Appalachian Regional Hospital, following a long illness.
Born on October 1, 1932, in Halo, he was the son of the late Joseph and Clara Tackett Burke. He was a retired coal miner.
He is survived by his wife, Sue Turner Burke.
Other survivors include one daughter, Teresa Lynn Akers of Wheelwright; one brother, Jimmy Bobby Burke of Albion, Michigan; two sisters, Myrtle Bates of Halo, Alberta Johnson of Elizabethtown, Tennessee, and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, October 18, at 11 a.m., at the Wheelwright Freewill Baptist Church with Rev. Louis Ferrari and Atha Johnson officiating.
Serving as pallbearers for the funeral of Clarence Burke were Joshua Akers, Bobby Akers, Charles Collins, Andy Akers, Charles Hamby, Gary Allen and Greg Boyd.
Honorary pallbearers were Jack Justice Jr., Darrell Flannery and Jeff Boyd.
Burial will be in the Buckingham Cemetery, Bevinsville, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home.
Edith Hall Lawson
Edith Hall Lawson, 81, of Prestonsburg, died Friday, October 13, 2000, in the Highlands Regional Medical Center.
She was born Janaury 1, 1919, in McDowell, the daughter of the late Elisha Hall and Millie Gearheart Hall. She was a retired short order cook and baby sitter, and member of Pilgrim Rest Old Regular Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Janice Henson, Dorlas Gail Lawson, both of Prestonsburg, Gerry "Geral Dean" McBrayer of Paintsville; two brothers, Haskell Hall of McDowell, Melvin Ray Hall of Prestonsburg; one sister, Ruthene Howell of McDowell, 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, October 16, at 11 a.m., in the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, with the Regular Baptist ministers officiating.
Burial was in the Mayo Cemetery, Prestonsburg, under the direction of Hall Funeral Home.
Pallbearers were Jerry Alan McBrayer, Dwayne Moore, Tim Patrick, Mark Henson, Bryan Hall, Tim Cornett, Dick Henson, Lance Owens and James Stumbo.
Honorary pallbearers were Geral John Leslie, Alex Hall Jr., Bob McGuire, Dee Howell Jr., Jason Moore, Bill R. Collins, Robert Allen, Jessie Johnson and Mark Hammond.
Christina Stephens York
Christina Stephens York, 28, of Allen, died Monday, October 16, 2000, at Our Lady of the Way Hospital, Martin, following a long illness.
Born on May 22, 1972, in Floyd County, she was the daughter of Samuel Jesse Stephens Jr. and Debra Manns Stephens of Allen.
She is survived by her husband, Jack York.
Other survivors include three sisters, Lisa Ann Stephens, Kimberly Dawn Hamilton, and Kayla Stephens, all of Allen.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, October 19, at noon at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, with Henry Lewis officiating.
Burial will be in the family cemetery, Stumbo Hollow, Allen, under the directon of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home.
Dora B. Newsome
Dora B. Newsome, 83, of Hi Hat, died Friday, October 13, 2000, in St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, Toledo, Ohio.
She was born April 16, 1917, in Beaver, the daughter of the late Tim Bentley and Mary Elizabeth Henson Bentley.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Estill X. Newsome.
Survivors include one son, Terry Newsome of Liberty Center, Ohio; one brother, Claude Bentley of Grethel; one sister, Draxie Newsome of Ligon; one grandchild and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, October 16, at 1 p.m., in the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, with Regular Baptist ministers officiating.
Burial was in the Roe Henson Cemetery, Beaver, under the direction of Hall Funeral Home.

John C. Maynard Jr.
John C. Maynard Jr., 73, of Johnstown, Ohio, formerly of Endicott, died Monday, October 16, 2000, at his residence in Johnstown.
He was born April 1, 1927, at Williamson, West Virginia, to the late John C. and Angeline Taylor Maynard. He was a supervisor with AT&T, U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War and a member of the Dorcus Mission in Charleston, West Virginia.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis L. Burchett Maynard.
Other survivors include two sons, David Maynard of New Albany, Ohio, and Rick Maynard of Johnstown, Ohio; two brothers, Crit Maynard of Williamson, and Paul Maynard of North Carolina; two sisters, Ernestine Varney of Williamson, and Imogene Harvel of Gulnar, four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, October 19, at 11 a.m., at the Floyd Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Crate Sparks officiating.
Burial will be in the Burchett Cemetery, at Endicott, under the direction Floyd Funeral Home, Prestonsburg.
Nora Webb Butcher
Nora Webb Butcher, 82, of Van Lear, died Friday, October 13, 2000, at the Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center, Paintsville.
Born on December 31, 1917, in Johnson County, she was the daughter of the late Alex Webb and Mandy Butcher Webb.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ashley Butcher, and a daughter, Jewell Sue Butcher.
Survivors include eight sons, Harold Butcher, Chester Butcher, Gene Butcher, Randall Butcher, Darrell Butcher, Foley Butcher, Sheldon Butcher and Charles Butcher, all of Van Lear; three daughters, Lorene Hall of Wabash, Indiana, Marie Herrera of Van Lear, and Norina Hackworth of Prestonsburg; 29 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, October 15, 2 p.m., at the Jones-Preston Funeral Chapel, with David Mollette officiating.
Burial will be in the Butcher Cemetery, Van Lear, under the direction of Jones-Preston Funeral Home.
Goldie Akers
Goldie Akers, 73, of Dana, died Wednesday, October 11, 2000, at the Highlands Regional Medical Center, Prestonsburg, following a long illness.
Born on November 23, 1926, in Dana, she was the daughter of the late Fred M. Akers and Josie Boyd Akers. She was a member of the Little Salem Regular Baptist Church, at Dana.
Her husband, Richard Akers, preceded her in death.
Survivors include two sons, Wade Akers of Danville, McKinley Akers of Dana; one daughter, Pam Akers of Roseville, Michigan; one brother, Francis Akers of Stamping Ground; one sister, Gladys Williams of Seneca, West Virginia, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, October 14, at 11 a.m., at the Little Salem Regular Baptist Church, at Dana, with the Old Regular Baptist ministers officiating.
Serving as pallbearers for the funeral of Goldie Akers were Teddy Ray Akers, Christopher Akers, Danny Akers, Daron Akers, Dennis Ray Akers and Larry Dean Boyd.
Burial was in the Akers family cemetery, Boyd Branch, Dana, under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Martin.
