Philemon "Toot "Hughes

Philemon "Toot" Hughes, 72, of Martin, died Tuesday, October 10, 2000, at Paul B. Hall Medical Center, Paintsville, following an extended illness.

Born on June 12, 1928, in Martin, he was the son of the late Joe and Maza Crisp Hughes. He was disabled, and was a member of the Mormon Church.

Survivors include three brothers, William R. Hughes of Auxier, Freeman Hughes of Beaver Creek, Ohio, Ernest "Butch" Hughes of Tarpon Springs, Florida; two sisters, Mary M. Hayes of Eastern, and Joan McGauley of Jackson, Michigan.

Funeral services were conducted Friday, October 13, at 11 a.m., at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, with an elder of the Mormon Church officiating.

Burial was in the Martin Cemetery, at Martin, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin.

Stella Mae Mullins

Stella Mae Mullins, 77, of Dorton, died Wednesday, October 11, 2000, at her residence.

Born on March 7, 1923, in Dot, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Curtis and Ida Mae Childress. She was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Mullins.

Survivors include five sons, Buford Mullins of Avilla, Indiana, Roger Mullins of Columbia City, Indiana, Clarence Mullins of Elwood, Gary Mullins of Prestonsburg, Marvin Mullins of Dorton; two daughters, Phyllis Little of Indianapolis, Indiana, Judy Stytle of Dorton; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, October 14, at 11 a.m. at the R.S. Jones & Son Funeral Home, with Carson Wright, Jason Lowery, Harvey Estep and others officiating.

Burial was in the Osborne Cemetery, Dorton, under the direction of R.S. Jones and Son Funeral Home.

Vivian W. Bayes

Vivian W. Bayes, 79, of Wittensville, died Wednesday, October 11, 2000, at the Paul B. Hall Medical Center, Paintsville.

Born on February 3, 1921, in Johnson County, she was the daughter of the late Argales Witten and Minnie Emily Rice.

Her husband, Hershel Bayes, preceded her in death.

Survivors include one sister, Edith Sadler of Harold.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, October 14, at the Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel, Paintsville, with Dick Vanhoose officiating.

Burial will be in the Witten family cemetery, Wittensville, under the direction of Jones-Preston Funeral Home.

Goldie Conn Lewis

Goldie Conn Lewis, 105, of Stanville, died Friday, October 13, 2000, at her residence.

She was born June 15, 1895, at Banner, the daughter of the late Alex and Neeley Branham Conn. She was of the Freewill Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Clyde Lewis.

Surviving are four sons, Woodrow Lewis of Norfolk, Ohio, Sam Lewis of Republic, Ohio, J.C. Lewis of Stanton, and William Smith of Pikeville; two daughters, Lorene Shull of Maple Heights, Ohio, and Myrtle Smith, Stanville; 37 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 16, at 1 p.m. at the Floyd Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. James Elkins officiating. Burial will follow in the Daniels Cemetery at Spring Branch of Hurricane Creek in Pike County, under the direction of Floyd Funeral Home of Prestonsburg.

Ray Thompson

Ray Thompson, 66, of Lima, Ohio, died Tuesday, October 10, 2000, at his residence.

Born on September 2, 1934, in Ivel, he was the son of the late Burley Thompson and Margie Cecil Thompson. He was self-employed as a general contractor. He was a member of the Lima American Legion Post 96, and a veteran of the Korean conflict.

Survivors include five sons, Mike Thompson, Danny Thompson, Alan Thompson, Darrel Thompson, and Jeff Thompson, all of Kentucky; four daughters, Gay Fyffe and Debbie Brown, both of Lima, Ohio, Bev Gaiser and Lynn Thompson, both of Kentucky; one brother, Jerry Thompson of Lima, Ohio; two sisters, Juanita Buroker of Lima, Ohio, Avonelle Wells of Kentucky; 22 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, October 13, at 10 a.m., at the Siferd Westwood Chapel, Lima, Ohio.

Burial will be in the Davidson Memorial Gardens in Ivel, under the direction of Siferd Funeral Home.

Military rites will be conducted by the VFW Post 1275.

Eddie Dean Hall

Eddie Dean Hall, 45, of McDowell, died Wednesday, October 11, 2000, at his residence, following a sudden illness.

Born on November 16, 1954, in Martin, he was the son of Elizabeth Frasure Hall, and the late Ray Hall. He was disabled.

Survivors, other than his mother, include one brother, Raymond Hall of McDowell; two sisters, Maxine Kinney and Deloris Stumbo, both of McDowell.

Funeral services were conducted Thursday, October 12, at 2 p.m., at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, with Ted Shannon officiating.

Burial was in the family cemetery, Frasures Creek, McDowell, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home.

Melvie Howell

Melvie Howell, 70, of McDowell, died Sunday, October 8, 2000, at Prestonsburg Health Care Center, Prestonsburg, after a long illness.

She was born February 18, 1930, at Ligon, the daughter of the late Perry and Nolie Sword Newsome. She was the owner of a mobile home park, a member of Harvest Time Ministries, Paintsville, and attended various local churches.

Her husband, Okie Howell, preceded her in death.

Survivors include one son, Okie Howell Jr. of Silver Lake, Indiana; two daughters, Denise Allen of Minnie, and Vernice Howell Combs of Little Paint; five brothers, John Henry Newsome of Richmond, Clifford Newsome of Claypool, Indiana, Cornelius Newsome, Arquilius Newsome, both of Warsaw, Indiana, and William Lee Newsome of Winona Lake, Indiana; three sisters, Elvia Scott of Prestonsburg, Velma Amburgey of Mentone, Indiana and Zelva Gayheart of Warsaw, Indiana; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, October 11, at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, with Clifford Newsome officiating.

Serving as pallbearers for the funeral of Melvie Howell were Scott Howell, Mike Allen, Dewayne Scott, Cornelius Newsome, Archie Newsome, William Newsome, Clayton Hall, Shannon Gayheart, and Monroe Jarrell.

Honorary pallbearers were Kenneth Combs, Tommy Allen and Arquiluis Newsome.

Burial was in the Lucy Hall Cemetery, McDowell, under the direction of Hall Funeral Home, Martin.

Margaret Adams Allen Salisbury

Margaret Adams Allen Salisbury, 86, of Drift, died Monday, October 9, 2000, at Our Lady of the Way Hospital, Martin.

She was born November 23, 1913, in Carr Creek, the daughter of the late Bob Adams and Susan King Adams.

She was twice married, first to Grayden Allen, and later to Curt Salisbury. Both preceded her in death.

Survivors include five sons, James Dempsey "Demp" Allen of Martin, Vernon L. Allen of Waynesville, Missouri, Buford Allen of Ypsilanti, Michigan, Curtis Ray Salisbury of Price, Danny Salisbury of Drift; two daughters, Esta Allen Berta of Canal Winchester, Ohio, Betty Jane Burchwell of Columbus, Ohio; four brothers, Tolba Adams and John Adams, both of Pinetop, Robert Adams of Nicholasville, Andrew Adams of Kingsport, Tennessee; three sisters, Ellen Robinson of Burnside, Grace Webb of Kingsport, Tennessee, Garnet Risner of Hindman, 18 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, October 13, at 11 a.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, with the clergyman, Ted Shannon, officiating.

Serving as the pallbearers for the funeral of Margaret Adams Allen Salisbury were Eddie Burchwell, Steve Berta, Randy Berta, Dennis Allen, Tommy Burchwell, Chris Allen, Shawn Salisbury and Graden Allen.

Honorary pallbearers were Craig Allen, Jason Salisbury and Todd Salisbury.

Burial will be in the Strange Cemetery, at Kite, under the direction of Hall Funeral Home.

Masil Collins

Masil Collins, 80, of Honaker, died Wednesday, October 11, 2000, at Highlands Regional Medical Center, following an extended illness.

Born on February 14, 1920, in Floyd County, she was the daughter of the late Spurlock and Evaline Kidd Damron. She was a member of the Little Dove Old Regular Baptist Church, at Printer.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Curt Collins.

Survivors include four sons, Orrise Collins and Jerry Collins, both of Honaker, Ralph Collins of Frenchburg, Florence "Bill" Collins of Harold; five daughters, Josephine Case, Nancy Kidd, Patricia Boyd and Brenda Howell, all of Honaker, Kathy Jean Kidd of McDowell, 51 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, October 13, at 1 p.m., at the Little Dove Old Regular Baptist Church, at Printer, with Walter Akers and other Old Regular Baptist ministers officiating.

Burial will be in the Blue Rose Cemetery, Big Branch, Honaker, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin.
