Thomas “Tom” Spencer Stewart, 50, of Martin, died Friday, April 6, 2001, at the St. Vincent Hospital, Williamsport, Indiana.
He was born March 7, 1951, at Martin, the son of Shirley Maxine Salisbury Stewart and the late Edwin V. Stewart. He was an OTR driver for Jacobson Transportation.
He is survived by his wife, Susan Halbert Stewart.
Survivors, in addition to his wife and mother, include two daughters, Cara Loraine Stewart and Julie Elaine Stewart, both of Martin; one brother, Eddie V. Stewart of Batavia, Ohio; and one sister, Rebecca Lin Stewart of Lehigh Acres, Florida.
Graveside services were conducted Tuesday, April 10, at 1 p.m., at the Stewart Cemetery, at Maytown, under the direction of Hall Funeral Home, Martin.
Serving as pallbearers for the funeral of Thomas “Tom” Spencer Stewart were Michael Stewart, Spencer Stewart, Thomas Stewart, William Stewart, Ben Stewart, Allan Halbert and Eddie Stewart.
Honorary pallbearers were Patrick Tallent, Bob Tallent and Eddie Clark.
Doyle Glenn Adkins
Doyle Glenn Adkins, 59, died March 7, 2001, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima, Ohio.
He was born April 22, 1941, in Letcher County, the son of Woodrow and Mae Adkins. He operated A&A Crafts and retired in 1984 as a small appliance repairman for Goodwill Industries. He was a member of the Lima Baptist Church and attended the Lafayette Missionary Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Elida Band Boosters, and Goodwill Industries worker. He attended McDowell High School. He was a Kentucky Colonel.
He is survived by his wife, Janet Smith Adkins.
Other survivors include two sons, Sean Adkins and Micheal Adkins, both of Lima, Ohio; three sisters, Carol Harris of Joseph, Oregon, Joyce Woods of Catlettsburg, and Sandra Hays of Cridersville, Ohio.
Funeral services were conducted at Lima Missonary Baptist Church, with Terry Brock officiating.
Burial was in the Woodlawn Cemetery.
Ellis Paige
Ellis Paige, 57, of West Portsmouth, Ohio, formerly of McDowell, died Monday, April 9, 2001, at West Portsmouth, following an extended illness.
Born on January 5, 1944, he was the son of the late Ervin and Caldona Reynolds Paige. He was a disabled coal miner.
Survivors include one son, Steven Paige of Louisa; one daughter, Kim Mills of Louisa; three brothers, Wid Paige of Whitesburg, Charles Paige, and Bobby Paige, both of McDowell; three sisters, Bertha Dye of McDowell, Verna Jones of Prestonsburg, and Margaret Caudill of Whitesburg.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, April 12, at 11 a.m., at the Little Rosa Old Regular Baptist Church of the New Salem Association at McDowell, with ministers of the Old Regular Baptist Church officiating.
Burial will be in the Greenbury Hall Cemetery, at McDowell, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin.
Togie (Bug) Salisbury Jr.
Togie (Bug) Salisbury Jr., 63, of Langley, died Friday, April 6, 2001, at his residence.
Born on June 1, 1937, at Langley, he was the son of the late Togie Salisbury and Minnie Howard Salisbury. He was a disabled mechanic.
Survivors include one brother, Hargus Salisbury of Jackson, Michigan; three sisters, Sally Brown of Plant City, Florida, Dora King of Baltimore, Maryland, and Joyce Wroten of Kearneysville.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, April 10, at 11 a.m., at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, with Raymond Lawson officiating.
Burial was in the family cemetery, at Langley.
Pallbearers were James Hoover, Denny Hoover, Nick Hoover, James (D.J.) Hoover, Neal Honaker, George Ousley and John Ousley.
Dr. Melvin Knight Stewart
Dr. Melvin Knight Stewart, 62, of Fishers, Indiana, formerly of Catlettsburg, died Monday, April 2, 2001, at the St. Vincent’s Hospital, Indianapolis, Indiana.
Born on November 4, 1938, in Wayland, he was the son of the late Walter Edward Stewart and Kathleen Norris Hobbs Stewart.
He was a retired dentist, primary family practice-Catlettsburg Medical Arts, a member of the Masonic lodge, El Hasa Shrine, Boyd County 4-H Council, past president of Eastern Kentucky Dental Society, Sigma Phi Epsilon, USA Track and Field, KHSAA registered track official, Athletic Congress National Federation of Inter-Scholastic Officials Association, Kentucky Colonel, Commonwealth of Kentucky Admiral; he attended the University of Kentucky, and received the DMD degree from the University of Louisville School of Dentistry in 1965. He was a U.S. veteran of the Vietnam era.
He was a track and field official at Goodwill Games and the U.S. Olympic Trials. He also competed in track in high school and college.
He is survived by his wife, Judith Salisbury Stewart.
Other survivors include one daughter, LuAnne Bailey; one son, Todd Stewart; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, April 7, at 1 p.m., at the Neal Funeral Home, in Catlettsburg, with Rev. William Bentley officiating.
Honorary pallbearers are David Salisbury, Betty Salisbury, Philip Salibury, Ada Salisbury, Tom Hardwick, Chady Hardwick, Terry Salisbury, Jackie Salisbury, Timothy Salisbury and Linda Salisbury.
Edgel Hayes
Edgel Hayes, 89, of Langley, died Monday, April 2, 2001, at Highlands Regional Medical Center, Prestonsburg, following a brief illness.
Born on January 8, 1912, in Floyd County, he was the son of the late Kennell Hayes and Martha Hoover Hayes. He is a disabled coal miner.
He is survived by his wife, Marie Arms Hayes of Lexington.
Other survivors include two sons, Larry Hayes of Volga, Dennis Hayes of Providence; four daughters, Emogene Lafferty of Martin, Peggy Mattingly, Juanita Hayes and June Hayes, all of Lexington; one sister, Gladys Hicks of Langley, 15 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, April 6, at 11 a.m., at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, with Don Crisp officiating.
Burial will be in the Hagans Cemetery, at Langley.
Estill Ousley
Estill Ousley, 70, of Bull Creek, Prestonsburg, died Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington, following a brief illness.
Born on August 25, 1930, in Floyd County, he was the son of Mary Shepherd Adams of Prestonsburg, and the late Pearl Ousley. He was a retired coal miner; a member of the Free United Baptist Church; West Prestonsburg; and a member of the U.M.W.A.
He is survived by his wife, Lucy Frazier Ousley.
Other survivors include one son, Roy Ousley of Prestonsburg; four daughters, Mary Jane Goble, Ada Combs and Kay Ousley, all of Prestonsburg, Joann Reynolds of Martin; one brother, Curtis Ousley of Claypool, Indiana; two sisters, Kathleen Robinson of Ashland, Ada Lou Hall of Emma; one half-sister, Georgia Ethel Porter of Tennessee, seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Saturday, April 7, at 1 p.m., at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, with Jim Smith, Ernie Blevins and Robert Ousley officiating.
Burial will be in the Goble-Ousley Cemetery, on Bull Creek, in Prestonsburg.
James Edward (Little Ed) Tackett
Elder James Edward (Little Ed) Tackett, 70, of Melvin, died Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at his residence, following an extended illness.
Born on November 7, 1930, in Floyd County, he was the son of the late John Melvin Tackett and Mellie Elswick Tackett. He was a retired coal miner, a member of the Joppa Old Regular Baptist Church, and a member of the U.M.W.A. Local #5899 at Wheelwright.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Myrtle Johnson Tackett.
Survivors include six sons, James Tackett, Gene Tackett, Tommy Tackett, and Eugene Tackett, all of Weeksbury, Donnie Tackett of Ligon and Paul Tackett of Melvin; three daughters, Marie Miller of Ligon, Anglea Meade and Tammy Tackett, both of Melvin; three brothers, Garnis Tackett of Indiana, Clifford Tackett of Weeksbury, Junior Tackett of Pike County; 23 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, April 7, at 1 p.m., at the Joppa Old Regular Baptist Church, with ministers of the Old Regular Baptist Church officiating.
Burial will be in the Matthew Tackett Cemetery, at Melvin, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin.
