Paul Newsome, 73, of Sun City, Arizona, formerly of Floyd County, died Thursday, November 2, 2000.
He was born October 16, 1927, in Floyd County, the son of the late Shelby and Burnett Newsome. He was a factory worker.
He is survived by his wife, Elsie Newsome.
Other survivors include one son, Richard Newsome of Arizona; three daughters, Lorane Newsome, Patty Newsome, and Bobby Newsome, all of Arizona; two sisters, Roberta Frasure of McDowell, and Palestine Newsome, of Ashtabula, Ohio.
Funeral services and burial will be conducted in Arizona.
Anna Hunter
Anna Hunter, 74, of Betsy Layne, died Tuesday, October 31, 2000, at the Pikeville Methodist Hospital, following an extended illness.
Born on August 21, 1926, in Martin, she was the daughter of the late B.J. and Minnie Marshall Hunter. She was disabled and was a member of the Prestonsburg Church of Christ.
Survivors include one brother, Delmar Hunter of Harold; one sister, Vernia Miller of Betsy Layne.
Funeral services will be conduced Thursday, November 2, at 1 p.m., at the Betsy Layne Church of Christ, with Evangelist Bennie Blankenship and Tommy Spears officiating.
Burial will be in the Bush Cemetery, at Harold, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin.
Orbie Counts
Orbie Counts, 82, of Bypro, died Sunday, October 29, 2000, at McDowell Appalachian Regional Hospital, following an extended illness.
Born on November 17, 1917, in Pike County, she was the daughter of the late John and Evaline Adkins Robinson. She was a member of the Rebecca Old Regular Baptist Church, at Kite.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Counts.
Survivors include three sons, Harold Counts, and Eugene Counts, both of Bypro, and Dean Counts of Taylor, Michigan; one daughter, Donna Johnson of Taylor, Michigan; one brother, Tom Robinson of Pikeville; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, November 1, at 11 a.m., at the Rebecca Old Regular Baptist Church, at Kite, with ministers of the Old Regular Baptist Church officiating.
Burial will be in the Newman Cemetery, Hi Hat, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin.
Betty Lou Tincher
Betty Lou Tincher, 62, of Bluefield, Virginia, died Thursday, October 26, 2000, at a Bluefield hospital.
Born September 4, 1938, in Clay County, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Minnie Stubblefield Larrison.
She is survived by her husband, Rev. Roy L. Tincher.
Other survivors include two sons, Rev. Markus L. Tincher of Pryor, Oklahoma, Randall Tincher of East Point; one sister, Sharon Hobson of Hamilton, Ohio; one brother, Frank Douglas Larrison of Hamilton, Ohio; and five grandchildren.
Memorial services were conducted Sunday, October 29, 2 p.m., at the First Church of God, Bluefield, Virginia, with Chaplain Phil Parker officiating.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, November 1, 2 p.m., at the Millville Avenue Church of God, Hamilton, Ohio, with Rev. Frank Curtis officiating.
Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Hamilton, under the direction of Mercer Funeral Home & Crematory, Bluefield.
Charles E. Spears
Charles E. Spears, 83, of Lexington, formerly of Pikeville, died Saturday, October 28, 2000.
Born October 20, 1917, at McCombs on Johns Creek in Pike County, he was the son of the late Andrew J. Spears and Elizabeth Taylor Spears. He was a graduate of Pikeville High School and Pikeville Junior College. He began teaching school at age 19 at Lower Hurricane Creek in Pike County, graduated from Eastern Kentucky University, taught at Virgie High School, (where he was also the basketball coach), Betsy Layne and other schools throughout Pike and Floyd counties. He was superintendent of the Pikeville City Schools for 13 years; and member of the Kiwanis Club, the Lions Club, Pike County Fair Board, March of Dimes organization and others. He was a member of the Vogel Day United Methodist Church and a World War II veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Requa Taylor Spears.
Other survivors include two sons, Charles Andrew "Andy" Spears of Lexington, and William Edison "Bill" Spears of Cary, Illinois; two sisters, Madge Mullins of Elkhorn City, and Betty Hall of Lexington; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, October 30, at 11 a.m., at the Vogel Day United Methodist Church at Harold.
Burial arrangements were under the direction of J.W. Call & Son Funeral Home, Pikeville.
Contributions may be made to the Vogel Day United Methodist Church, Pikeville College, or Hospice of the Bluegrass.
Leonard Coburn
Leonard Coburn, 86, of Garrett, died Thursday, October 29, 2000, at his residence.
He was born February 22, 1914, in Knott County, the son of the late Ballard and Maggie Ramey Coburn. He was a retired miner for U.S. Steel in Bradshaw, West Virginia; worked at Pond Creek Pocahontas Coal Company; and was a member of the U.M.W.A. at Bluefield, West Virginia.
He is survived by his wife, Ethel Coburn.
Other survivors include three sons, Dennis Coburn and Ricky Coburn, both of High Point, North Carolina, Douglas Gene Coburn of Madison, Ohio; two daughters, Merilyn Patton of Richlands, Virginia, and Geraldine Daniels of Ashtabula, Ohio; one brother, Denver Coburn of Garrett; five sisters, Ruth Martin Sullivan and Mae Dancer, both of Lima, Ohio, Mary Robinson of Dake, California, Edna Howard of Hazard, Marie Baker of Kendallville, Indiana; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday, October 29, at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, with Jerry Manns and Jimmy Hill officiating.
Burial will be in the Tom Sparks Cemetery, Bradshaw, West Virginia, under the direction of Hall Funeral Home.
Walter L. Stumbo
Walter L. Stumbo, 74, of Langley, died Friday, October 27, 2000, at Versailles, following an extended illness.
Born on February 12, 1926, in McDowell, he was the son of Annie Hall Stumbo of McDowell and the late Lee Stumbo. He was a retired coal miner, and a member of DAV Chapter 128, Garrett.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gertrude Turner Stumbo.
Survivors include five sons, James R. Stumbo of Langley, Barry Ray Stumbo of Versailles, William Lee "Buggy" Stumbo, Robert Dean Stumbo, and Walter Dale Stumbo, all of McDowell; four daughters, Cheryl Frasure of Hueysville, Teresa Gwen Hunt and Jackie Belinda Douglas, both of Versailles, and Patricia Potter of McDowell; three sisters, Kathleen Prater, and Betty Akers, both of McDowell, Elenore Pack of Drift; 19 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, October 30, at 1 p.m., at the Old Beaver Old Regular Baptist Church, at Minnie, with Clifford Williams, Ersel Huff, Omery C. Hall, and others officiating.
Burial was in the Lucy Hall Cemetery, at McDowell, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin.
DAV services were conducted by Chapter 128.
Lucy McClung
Lucy McClung, 82, of Prestonsburg, died Monday, October 30, 2000, at the Parkview Manor Nursing Home at Pikeville.
She was born March 14, 1918, at Looneyville, West Virginia, the daughter of late Steven and Melissa "Nida" Monroe.
She is survived by one daughter, Margaret Ann Smith Griffith of Lexington and one granddaughter.
Burial will be Wednesday, November 1, at Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens at Cross Lanes, West Virginia.
Arrangements are under the direction of Floyd Funeral Home, Prestonsburg.
Virginia Lewis
Virginia Lewis, 55, of Banner, died Saturday, October 28, 2000, at the Pikeville Methodist Hospital, following an extended illness.
She was born December 7, 1944, in Banner, the daughter of the late Elder Lewis Jr. and Eulavene Lewis. She was a member of the Free United Baptist Church, Prestonsburg.
Her husband, Ralph Lewis, preceded her in death.
Survivors include three sons, Leo Lewis of Sydney, Gary Lewis and Ralph Lewis Jr., both of Banner; one daughter, Janet Salisbury of Banner; two brothers, Kenneth Lewis of Van Lear, Douglas Lewis of Banner; two sisters, Elsie Smith and Freda Smith both of Banner; two grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, November 1, at 1 p.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, with the clergymen, Ernie D. Blevins and Sterlin Bolen, officiating.
