Ruthie Newsome, age 70, of Virgie passed away Friday, July 7, 2000, in her home.
Born March 25, 1930, at Virgie, she was the daughter of Andy and Mindy Newsome. She was a homemaker and a member of the Caney Creek Old Regular Baptist Church.
She is survived by five sons, Randy Newsome of Morehead, Teddy Newsome of Collins, Tivis Newsome, Jonas Newsome and Scottie Newsome all of Penny Highway; four daughters, Clara Bartley of Robinson Creek, Brenda Kiser of Penny Highway, Mindy Fleming of Virgie, Carolyn Kiser of Douglas Parkway; one brother, Chester Newsome of Albien, Michigan; 16 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; spouse, Charlie Newsome; one son, Millard Newsome; 11 brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be held Monday, July 10, at 11 a.m., at the R.S. Jones & Son Virgie Chapel. Officiating will be ministers Monroe Jones, Jason Lowery, Eles Case, Don B. Little, Dewey Roberts, Jimmy Dye and others.
Visitation will be after 1 p.m. Sunday at Funeral Home with night services at 7 p.m. Interment will be at the Newsome Branch Cemetery in Virgie.
Berton B. Slone
Berton B. Slone, 67, of Garner, died Friday, July 7, 2000, at Pikeville Methodist Hospital, following an extended illness.
He was born August 26, 1933, in Knott County, the son of the late Andrew and Isabell Slone Slone. He was disabled.
Survivors include a brother, Daniel Slone of Garner, and two sisters, Evaline Watts of Litt Carr and Lydia Slone of Garner
Funeral services will be today, Sunday, July 9, at 1 p.m. at the Hindman United Baptist Church at Owens Branch. Clyde Jacobs, James Hughes and Bill Kirby will officiate. Burial will be in the Lower Jimmy Slone Cemetery at Pippa Passes.
Dwayne Keith Mullins
Dwayne Keith Mullins, 39, of Somerset, formerly of Prestonsburg, died Friday, July 7, 2000.
He was born August 31, 1960 in Anderson, Indiana, the son of the Herb and Grace (Harris) Mullins.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by two brothers, Kenneth Mullins and Kevin Herbert Mullins, both of Prestonsburg.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 10, 2000 at 10 a.m. at the Floyd Funeral Chapel with Elder Albert King, Elder Thomas Hamilton and Elder James Estepp officiating. Burial will be in the Melvin Cemetery at Hi Hat. Visitation will continue until 10 a.m. at the Floyd Funeral Home. All arrangements are under the directions of the Floyd Funeral Home of Prestonsburg.
Johnny Newsome
Johnny Newsome, 88, of Prestonsburg, died Wednesday, July 5, 2000, at Highlands Regional Medical Center, after an extended illness.
He was born January 20, 1912, in Floyd County, the son of the late Feddie and Hanna Hall Newsome. He was a retired county employee and member of the Landmark Church of God in Prestonsburg.
Survivors include his wife, Loretta Shepherd Newsome; six sons, Ronnie Newsome of Langley, and Donald, Johnny Lee, Frank, Curtis and Damon Newsome, all of Prestonsburg; four daughters, Sadie Prater of David, Thelma Parsons and Dolly Whitaker, both of Prestonsburg, and Ruth Jones of Englewood, Florida; a sister, Lona Johnson of Prestonsburg; 20 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be today, Friday, July 7, at 2 p.m., at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, with Kenneth Prater and Taulbie Goodman officiating. Burial will be in Davidson Memorial Gardens at Ivel.
Estil Elkins
Estil Elkins, 79, of Pikeville, died Wednesday, July 5, 2000, at Pikeville Methodist Hospital.
Born September 3, 1920, at Shelby Gap, he was a son of the late James (Jimmer) Elkins and Bertha Anderson. He was a World War II veteran, a retired aircraft worker and of the Old Regular Baptist faith.
He is survived by his wife, Jewel Elkins; two sons, Keevin L. Elkins of Ecorse, Michigan, and Oscar K. Elkins of Almount, Michigan; one daughter, Kyna Elkins Javer of Warren, Michigan; a brother, Ossie Elkins of Texas; six sisters, Mazella Phipps and Velva Lumpkins, both of Tennessee, Nellie Woods and Virnilla Kelly, both of Virginia, Alma Nash of Ohio, and Verma Boggs of Lexington; seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Sunday, July 9, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the Old Elkhorn Old Regular Baptist Church, with ministers Charles Nitchie, Robert Kelley, Barry Lucas, Jason Lowery, James Branham, Carson Wright and others officiating.
Interment will be in Cable Cemetery at Dorton, with arrangements by R.S. Jones & Son Funeral Home, Virgie Chapel.
Beulah Meyers Bragg
Beulah Bragg, 70, of South Williamson, died Saturday, July 1, 2000, at South Williamson Appalachian Regional Hospital.
Born at Wheelwright on August 6, 1929, she was a daughter of the late Charlie and Caldora Johnson Meyers. She was a homemaker and a member of Slaters Branch Freewill Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Andy Bragg, in 1985.
She is survived by two brothers, Hubert Morris and Homer Morris, both of Whitesville, West Virginia; two sisters, Liza Jackson of Detroit and Stella Beard of Alabama; five half-brothers, Frankie Meyers of Toler, Charlie Meyers of Turkey Creek, Buck James Meyers of Columbus, Ohio, Charles Ray Broglin of Detroit, and June Bug Broglin; and six half-sisters, Carol Muncy of Maryville, Tennessee, Donna Coley of Slaters Branch, Sedella Broglin, Marlene Broglin, Viola Broglin and Lucille Broglin.
Funeral services were July 5, in the Hatfield Funeral Chapel at Toler, with the Rev. Joe Chafins officiating. Burial followed in the Fouch Family Cemetery at Slaters Branch.
Gillis Hamilton
Gillis Hamilton, 62, of Elkton, Maryland, formerly of Floyd County, died Tuesday, July 4, 2000, at his residence, following an extended illness.
He was born February 26, 1938, in Grethel, a son of Anthony Hamilton of Harold and the late Octavia Parsons Hamilton.
He was a retired automobile worker for Chrysler, a member of the United Auto Workers Local 1183 in Delaware, and a member of Little Rosa Old Regular Baptist Church at McDowell.
In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife, Dorothy Lee Jones Hamilton; two sons, Gillis Patrick Hamilton and Gilbert Dywayne Hamilton, both of Elkton; one daughter, Clarissa Gay Kist of Elkton; two brothers, Eddie Hamilton and Palmer Hamilton, both of Harold; one sister, Clara Martin of Elkton; five grandchildren and one step-grandchild.
Funeral services will be Saturday, July 8, at 10 a.m., at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, with Deaner Moore and ministers of the Old Regular Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Jones Cemetery at Teaberry.
Pallbearers are Steven Bradley Hamilton, Tracy Jones, Chad Douglas Jones, Daylio Kiser, Daniel E. Kist, Geramy Richard Tackett, Kevin Kyle Tackett, Douglas Ray Martin, and Gary Slone.
Eugene R. Damron
Eugene R. Damron, 86, of Key Largo, Florida, died, June 18, 2000, at his home.
Born at Harold, he was the son of the late Jerome and Cora Belcher Damron.
He was a US Navy veteran, First Class Petty Officer, president of Damron and Damron Cinder Block Co. of Elkhorn City, and later superintendent of construction for Ryan Homes in Indianapolis, Indiana.
He retired to the Keys in 1981, where he became a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Moose Club.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Picklesimer Damron; a son, Gene C. Damron of Indianapolis; a daughter, Kay Thacker of Key Largo; two brothers, Jennings Damron of England and E.W. Damron of Pikeville; two sisters, Pauline Amburgey and Earline Spears, both of Ashland; four grandsons, and two granddaughers.
A private memorial service took place at the family home in Key Largo with Minister David Yuhaz officiating. Cremation was arranged by Beyer Funeral Home of Key Largo.

Ruby Little
Ruby Mae Hall Little, 80, of Frenchburg, formerly of Floyd County, died Tuesday, June 20, 2000, at St. Claire Medical Center in Morehead.
She is survived by four sons, Larry Ray Little of McDowell, William Little of Drift, James Little of Weeksbury, and Ricky Little of Wheelwright; two daughters, Sandra Jean Lidster of Buford, South Carolina, and Teresa Lynn Little of Frenchburg; 14 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were Friday, June 23, at Melvin Church of Christ, with burial in the Matthew Tackett Cemetery at Melvin, under the direction of Randy Halsey & Son/Menifee Home for Funerals in Frenchburg.

Marlie Vance Collins
Marlie Vance Collins, 69, of Fairborn, Ohio, died Tuesday, June 27, 2000, at Miami Valley Hospital.
She was born April 23, 1931, in Floyd County, a daughter of the late Jessie and Jane Newsome Vance. She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Arkenbert States Auxiliary Unit 6861 and Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary 2641 in Fairborn.
Surviving are a son, Mikell Collins of Fairborn; three daughters, Carolyn Walters and Carla Henson, both of Fairborn, and Carleen Craig of Donnelsville, Ohio; two sisters, Mamie Vance of Michigan and Marie Davidson of Columbus, Ohio; nine grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were Friday, June 30, at Belton Funeral Home of Fairborn, with Rev. Shawn Hicks officiating. Burial followed in Byron Cemetery.

Dewey Lee Howell
Dewey Lee Howell, 56, of McDowell, died Tuesday, July 4, 2000, at King's Daughter Medical Center in Ashland, following an extended illness.
Born December 24, 1943, at McDowell, he was the son of the late Palmer Osborne and Gertie Howell Debord. He was a retired truck driver.
Survivors include a son, Jeptha Charles Hopkins of Jefferson, Ohio; a daughter, Elizabeth Howell of Ashtabula, Ohio; a half-brother, Herbie Osborne of Lucasville, Ohio; four half-sisters, Linda Nelson and Berniece Hall, both of Ashtabula, Brenda Lee Osborne of Geneva, Ohio, and Lori Slone of David; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter Shana Marie Howell.
Funeral services will be today, Friday, July 7, at 11 a.m., at Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, with Denver Meade officiating. Burial will follow in the Elliott Cemetery on Frasure's Creek, McDowell.
