Born on March 19, 1927, in Banner, he was the son of the late Milan Hurd and Willie Rice Hurd. He was a self-employed painter, a U.S. Army veteran, and a member of the Harold Church of Christ.
Survivors include one son, Graham Dalton Hurd Jr. of Brooksville, Florida; six daughters, Priscilla Hurd Tafolla of Dana, Belinda Ellen Hurd Knuckles of Corbin, Marcalla Hurd Hayes of Betsy Layne, Thelma Annette Hurd Kelly of Auberry, California, Alice Paulette Hurd Goble of Kevey; one brother, Jackie Gene Hurd of Vanceburg; two sisters, Marvis Duncan of Vanceburg, Mary Alice Blair of Dana; 16 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday, June 18, at 3 p.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, with the clergyman, James Hubert Harmon, officiating.
Burial was in the Robinson Cemetery, Rice Branch, Banner, under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Martin.
Serving as pallbearers were Matthew Hays, Kevin Hays, Jeff Wallen, Rick Wallen, M.C. Robinson, Justin Goble and Lynn Cline.
Thomas Roe Hammonds
Thomas Roe Hammonds, 45, of Wabash, Indiana, formerly of Floyd County, died Friday, June 16, 2000, at his residence following a brief illness.
Born on April 23, 1955 in Floyd County, he was the son of the late Charles E. and Martha J. May Hammonds. He was a factory worker for Wabash Alloys.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Luanne L. Moore Hammonds.
Survivors include one son, Charles D. Hammonds of Escondido, California; one step-son, Derrick Moore of Wabash, Indiana; one daughter, Jennifer A. Hammonds of Auburn, Alabama; four sisters, Cathy Goble of Ivel, Elizabeth Isaac and Emogene Branham, both of Prestonsburg, Joan Hatfield of Ulysses; and one granddaughter.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, June 21, at 10 a.m., at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, with Troy Tackett officiating.
Burial will be in the Hammonds Family Cemetery, Water Gap, Prestonsburg, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home.
Carrie Jayne Jones
Carrie Jayne Jones, 82, of Prestonsburg, formerly of Ashland, died Friday, June 16, 2000, at the Hospice Care Center at St. Joseph Hospital.
Born in Flat Gap, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Minnie Holbrook Jayne. She was the former owner and operator of the Prestonsburg Cleaners from 1947 to December of 1989. She was also a member of the First United Methodist Church, Prestonsburg, the Women's Club of Prestonsburg, and the Eastern Star.
Her husband, William Arbor Jones, preceded her in death.
Survivors include one son, William Gerald Jones of Prestonsburg; two sisters, LeOra Skagggs of Dearborn Beach, Florida, Irene Gardner of Charlotte, North Carolina; one brother, William E. Jayne of Rex. Georgia; and one granddaughter.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, June 20, at 1:30 p.m., at the W.R. Milward Mortuary-Southland, with Dr. Harold Dorsey officiating.
Burial was in the Lexington Cemetery, under the direction of W.R. Milward Mortuary-Southland.
Lee Roy "Dukes" Ousley
Lee Roy "Dukes" Ousley, 54, of Martin, died Thursday, June 15, 2000, at his residence.
Born on December 17, 1945, he was the son of the late Roe Ousley and Grace Robinson Ousley.
Survivors include four brothers, Mike Ousley of Lexington, Darrell Ousley, Rondall Ray Ousley and Willie Everett Ousley, all of Martin; two sisters, Joyce Ann Ousley of Martin, and Madonna Duncan of Prestonsburg.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday, June 18, at 1 p.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, with the clergyman, Jim Stephens, officiating.
Burial was in the Ousley Cemetery, Spurlock Fork, Prestonsburg, under the direction of Hall Funeral Home.
Serving as pallbearers were members of the Martin Volunteer Fire Department.
Honorary pallbearers were members of the Martin Police Department, Left Beaver Fire and Rescue Squad, Maytown Volunteer Fire Department, Prestonsburg Fire Department and Paintsville Fire Department.
Sophia Lea Kidd Elliott Hatcher
Sophia Lea Kidd Elliott Hatcher, 67, of Honaker, died Saturday, June 17, 2000, at Our Lady of the Way Hospital, Martin.
Born on November 10, 1932, in Honaker, she was the daughter of the late Alex and Sarah Parsons Kidd. She was a member of the Honaker Church of Christ.
Survivors include three sons, Bobby Joe Elliott of Harold, Charles Elliott of Pikeville, and Dwayne Elliott of Honaker; two daughters, Betty Ann Elliott Ratliff of Honaker, and Connie Sue Justice of Harold; one brother, Edgar Kidd of Toledo, Ohio; three sisters, Betty Jo Elliott of Fallsburg, Inez Rogers of Harold, and Lois Adkins of Honaker, 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, June 20, at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, with Phillip Rogers, Frank Jr. Kidd and Tommy Bush officiating.
Burial was in the Kidd Family Cemetery, at Honaker, under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Martin.
Martha Elizabeth Bartley Rice
Martha Elizabeth Bartley Rice, 78, of Indianapolis, Indiana, died Saturday, June 17, 2000, at her residence.
Born on March 22 1922, in Ligon, she was the daughter of the late Acie and Mandy Horn Bartley.
Her husband, Shirley B. Rice, preceded her in death.
Survivors include one son, Harry G. Rice of Indianapolis, Indiana; seven daughters, Clara J. Hamilton, Ruby M. Rice, Amanda L. Rice, Barbara J. Rice, and Debbie K. Rice, all of Indianapolis, Audrey M. Lowe of Abington, Virginia, and Shirley A. Davis, of Prestonsburg; one half-brother, Ray Fenix; seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, June 22, at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, with Rev. Stephen C. Rice officiating.
Serving as pallbearers for the funeral of Martha Elizabeth Bartley Rice were Dallas Hamilton, Neil Rice, Harry Rice, Cain Maynard, Sam Rice and Howard Rice.

Joy Terry Messer
Joy Terry Messer, 72, of Martin, died Sunday, June 18, 2000, at Our Lady of the Way Hospital, Martin.
Born on June 28, 1927, in Garrett, she was the daughter of the late H.F. Terry and Dolly Rice Terry.
She was a retired businesswoman, a member of the Church of Christ, Martin, a member of the Eastern Star, Prestonsburg.
She is survived by her husband, Truman Messer.
Other survivors include one daughter, Tina Messer Ousley of Martin; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, June 21, at 11 a.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, with the clergyman, Gary Mitchell, officiating.
Serving as pallbearers for the funeral of Joy Terry Messer were: Charles Hall, Jerry Rice, Paul Rice, William E. Petry, Bill Haywood, Steve Messer, David Messer, and Kenneth Buzz Allen.
Burial will be in the Davidson Memorial Gardens, Ivel, under the direction of Hall Funeral Home.
Julia Norma Collins Howell
Julia Norma Collins Howell, 80, of Prestonsburg, died Monday, June 19, 2000, at Highlands Regional Medical Center of an extended illness.
Born on April 26, 1920, at Cliff, she was the daughter of the late Albert Collins and Maggie Spradlin. She was a former salesperson in retail sales, and last worked for City Discount Store.
She was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church, at West Van Lear.
She is survived by her husband, Hershel Howell.
Other survivors include two daughters, Saundra Howell of Prestonsburg, Dolores Ward of Van Lear; one sister, Anna Belle Howell of Prestonsburg; one brother, Haskell Glenn Collins of Kingston, Tennessee; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, May 22, at 2 p.m., at the Carter Funeral Home Chapel, Prestonsburg, with Rev. Vernon Slone officiating.
Serving as pallbearers for the funeral of Norma Collins Howell were: Michael Ward, Joseph Edward Ward, Joshua Darrell Fannin, Damon Smith, Tommy Howell and Bucky Collins.
