Kenneth Hinkle, 70, of Sebring, Florida, formerly of McDowell, died October 28, 2000, at Highlands Regional Medical Center in Sebring.
Born in McDowell, he was the son of the late Birch (Burt) and Florence Moore Hinkle. He was a mechanic and the owner of Ken Hinkle Service Center in Sebring, to which he moved in 1963.
He was a deacon at Whispering Pines Baptist Church, a US Navy veteran of the Korean War, a past commander of VFW Post 4300, and former member of American Legion Post 74. He also served on the Color Guard Unit for Sebring High School football games.
Survivors include his wife, Hila Blackburn Hinkle of Sebring, formerly of Martin; a daughter, Brenda Ezell of Ft. Sill, Oklahoma; a son, Kenny Hinkle Jr. of Sebring; five sisters, Laura Allen of Minnie, Vernice Hall and Nola Adams, both of New London, Ohio, Shirley Pack of Pataskala, Ohio, and Anna Mae McDermott of Lima, Ohio; a brother, Jackie Hinkle of McDowell; several grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were November 2, at Morris Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Jim Rivers and Rev. James Annis officiating. Burial, with military honors, was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Lake Placid.
June McCoy Smith
June McCoy Smith, 83, of Louisville, died Wednesday, November 14, 2000, at Baptist Hospital East in Louisville.
She was born in Floyd County on February 16, 1917, a daughter of the late J.P. and Delpha Little McCoy.
She was retired from the Webcor Corp., and she was preceded in death by her husband, Lum Junior Smith.
She is survived by two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were November 18, at the Owen Funeral Home Chapel in Louisville, with Bro. Ron Davis officiating. Burial was in the Louisville Memorial Gardens.
Nolva Weaver
Nolva Maryland (Pat) Weaver, 85, of Circleville, Ohio, formerly of Floyd County, died Monday, November 13, 2000, at Brown Memorial Home in Circleville.
Born at Honaker on July 26, 1915, she was a daughter of the late Rosa Kidd and James M. Clark. She was a member of the North Moreland Evangelical United Brethren Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter E. Weaver.
She is survived by one son, Andre A. Keller of Circleville; three sisters, Betty Z. Pace of Lexington, Helen Pauley of Sciotoville, Ohio, and Edith Mougey of Lucasville, Ohio; one granddaughter, and one great-granddaughter.
Funeral services were Friday, November 17, in the Memorial Burial Park Chapel in Wheelersburg, Ohio, under the direction of Defenbaugh-Wise Funeral Home of Circleville.
Paul G. Fyffe
Paul G. Fyffe, 65, former owner of WSIP AM and FM radio station in Paintsville, died November 14, 2000, at Three Rivers Medical Center in Louisa, following a heart attack.
He was a driving force in bringing professional baseball to eastern Kentucky, when the New York Yankees based a farm team in Paintsville in 1978. The baseball field at Johnson Central High School is named in his honor.
He was born November 10, 1935, the son of the late Normal and Ruie Franklin Fyffe. He was a graduate of the former Flat Gap High School and attended Morehead State University. He worked at WSIP for several years before buying the station in 1960. He sold it in the late 1980s. At the time of his death, he was a sales representative for Appalachian Wireless.
He is survived by three sons, Mike Fyffe, Barry Fyffe and Tony Fyffe, all of Paintsville; and one brother, James W. Fyffe of Montgomery, Alabama.
Funeral services were November 16, at the Preston Funeral Home Chapel in Paintsville, with Terry Reffett officiating.
Lizzie Gibson Roberts
Lizzie Gibson Roberts, 90, of Pikeville, died Tuesday, November 14, 2000, at Pikeville Health Care Center.
Born May 1, 1910, in Pike County, she was the daughter of the late Polly Iricks and Ebb Osborne. She was a former switchboard operator at the Pike County Courthouse and was a member of the Little Laura Regular Baptist Church at Hurricane Creek.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Phines Gibson.
Survivors include two sons, Arnold Lee Gibson of Pikeville and Jackie Darrell Gibson of Harold; two daughters, Yvonne Hall of Pikeville and Betty Lou Johnston of Columbus, Ohio; 17 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Friday, November 17, at noon, at the J.W. Call Funeral Home in Pikeville, with Regular Baptist ministers officiating. Burial will follow in the Iricks Family Cemetery at Island Creek.
Maggie Caldwell Steele
Maggie Caldwell Steele, 89, of Allen, died Thursday, November 16, 2000, at her residence.
Born December 24, 1910, in Pike County, she was the daughter of the late Andrew Caldwell and Susan Dillion Caldwell. She was a retired cook, formerly employed at Harold Grade School for 15 years.
She was a member of the Betsy Layne Freewill Baptist Church for more than 70 years and a charter member of the church’s Ladies Auxillary.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William K. Steele.
Survivors include one son, William K. Steele Jr. of Owensville; three daughters, Clara Ratliff and Sue Reynolds, both of Allen, and Wanda S. May of Pikeville; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Sunday, November 19, at 1 p.m., at the Betsy Layne Freewill Baptist Church, with Clergyman Tracy Patton officiating. Burial will follow in the Davidson Memorial Gardens at Ivel, under the direction of Hall Funeral Home of Martin.
Visitation is after 5 p.m., Friday, and after 8 a.m., Saturday, at the funeral home, and after 10 a.m., Sunday, at the church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the church building fund.
Bewel Duff
Bewel Duff, 61, of Garrett, died Thursday, November 16, 2000, at Highlands Regional Medical Center at Prestonsburg.
He was born July 28, 1939, in Garrett, the son of the late Green Duff and Birdie Chaffins Duff. He was a retired employee of Ford Motor Co. in Lima, Ohio, a member of the McGuffey Freewill Baptist Church in McGuffey, Ohio, and a member of UAW, Local 1219.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Malott Duff; two sons, Todd Duff of Waynesfield, Ohio, and Lance Duff of St. Mary’s, Ohio; two daughters, Lisa Hurley of Huntsville, Ohio, and Stacie Nigh of Urbana, Ohio; three brothers, Wade Duff and Willie Duff, both of Garrett, and Sidney Duff of Port Deposit, Maryland; four sisters, Pauline Cotter of Ellenton, Florida, Vernie Rowe of Alger, Ohio, Olive Martin of Langley, and Helen Lowery of Bell Center, Ohio; and 10 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Saturday, November 18, at 1 p.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel at Martin, with Freewill Baptist ministers officiating. Burial will be in the Chaffins Cemetery, Rock Fork, Garrett.
Visitation is after 8 a.m., Friday, at the funeral home.
Serving as pallbearers for the funeral of Bewel Duff were Rick Rowe, Duncan Rowe, Truman Rowe, Todd Duff, Lance Duff, Clinton Duff, Keith Nigh, Wes Hurley, Colter Hurley, and Brian Stark.
Peggy Jo Sparks Branham
Peggy Jo Sparks Branham, 65, of Mt. Sterling, died November 15, 2000, at her residence.
She was born December 17, 1934, at Paintsville, a daughter of Jettie Wells Sparks of Prestonsburg and the late McKinley Sparks Sr.
A Methodist, she was employed at Peggy’s Dress Shop in Mt. Sterling.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Wheeler Branham of Mt. Sterling; a son, Larry Branham, and a daughter, Belinda Branham, both of Mt. Sterling; two brothers, McKinley Sparks Jr. of Frenchburg, and Oakie Gene Sparks of Prestonsburg; four sisters, Pauline Wells, Mary Click and Dinah Lynn VanHoose, all of Prestonsburg, and Sue Melvin of Mt. Sterling; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be today at 1 p.m., at Taul Funeral Home Chapel in Mt. Sterling, with burial to follow in the Machpelah Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Claire Hospice of Morehead.
Active pallbearers will be Charlie Clarke, Johnny Webb, Daryl Sparks, Mickey Sparks, Dalus Sparks and Willie McGuire. Honorary pallbearers will be Bob Breeding, Ronnie Daniel, Shag Branham, Stanley Daniel, Chester Shepherd, Worth McGuire, Charles “Chuck” Melvin and Ondalow Hunt.
Larry Ray Howard
Larry Ray Howard, 48, of Garrett, died Tuesday, November 14, 2000, at his residence.
Born on September 1, 1952, in Knott County, he was the son of Ola Cox Howard of Eastern and the late Gold Howard. He was a disabled coal miner and the husband of Diana Shepherd Howard.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Christina Howard and Melissa Howard, both of Garrett; two brothers, Ronald Howard and Donald Howard, both of Eastern; a sister, Kathy Cornette of Georgia; and one grandchild.
Funeral services will be Friday, November 17, at 1 p.m., at the Rock Fork Old Regular Baptist Church at Garrett, with Jerry Manns and Earl Slone officiating. Burial will follow in the Howard Cemetery on Rock Fork at Garrett.
Visitation will be at the church after 6 p.m., tonight.
