James Kenneth Lewis, age 47, of Betsy Layne, Ky., husband of Beverly Hall Lewis, passed away, Thursday, September 6, 2001, at the Pikeville Methodist Hospital, Pikeville, Ky., following a sudden illness.
He was born March 20, 1954, at Dana, Ky., the son of Andrew Lewis of Ivel, Ky., and Loveean Kidd of Dana, Ky. He was an employee of Discount Auto, Prestonsburg, Ky. He was a member of the Betsy Layne Freewill Baptist Church, Betsy Layne, Ky., and was a Child of the King.
In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by two sons, James D. Lewis of Prestonsburg, Ky., Jason R. Lewis of Betsy Layne, Ky.; one brother, Jeffery Lewis of Dana, Ky.; four sisters, Kathy McCoy of Stanville, Ky., Peggy Boyd and Charlene Lewis, both of Dana, Ky., Betty Boyd of Prestonsburg, Ky.
Funeral services for James Kenneth Lewis were conducted Saturday, September 8, 2001, at 1 p.m., at the Betsy Layne Freewill Baptist Church, Betsy Layne, Ky., with the clergyman, Tracy Patton, officiating.
Burial followed in the Kidd Cemetery, Dana, Ky., under the professioncal care of the Hall Funeral Home, Martin, Ky.
Visitation was at the church.
Pallbearers: James Daniel Lewis, Jason Lewis, Shawn Boyd, Bill Kidd, Josh Kidd, James Lee Hall, Jeff Lewis, Chase Younts, and Billy Boyd.
Honorary: Stacy Boyd, Dillard Boyd, Jackie Boyd, Hillard Hall, Darvene Bryant, Elvis Keathley, Vince Jarrell, Barry Hall, and Brian Nelson.
Wanda Blevins Nelson
Wanda Blevins Nelson, 70, of Dwale, Ky., died Sunday, September 9, 2001, at her residence, following a brief illness.
Born on April 14, 1931, at Louisa, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Ora Blevins and Spicy May Blevins. She was a homemaker, and a member of the Church of God, at Dwale, Ky.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Nelson.
Survivors include six daughters, Bonnie Campbell of Martin, Ky., Francis Cooler of Jeffersonville, Ind., Carol Jean Collins of Cliff, Ky., Freda Owens of Lawrenceburg, Ky., Lois Nelson of Dwale, Ky., Kathy Garrett of Calfcreek, Prestonsburg, Ky.; and one brother, Jack Jarrell of Thelma, Ky., eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Russell Jack Nelson; three brothers; and one sister, Shirley Jones.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, September 12, 2001, at 2 p.m., at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, Ky., with Elmer Davis and Woody Crum officiating.
Burial will be in the Davidson Memorial Gardens, Ivel, Ky., under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, Ky.
Visitation is at the funeral home.
Paul Douglas Salyers
Paul Douglas Salyers, 57, of Prestonsburg, died Sunday, Septem-ber 9, 2001, following an extended illness.
He was born August 30, 1944, in Prestonsburg.
Survivors include two daughters, Dawn Sullivan and Sandy Westfall; one brother, Charles Ray Salyers; three grandsons, Dalton Sullivan, Bryan Westfall, and Kyle Bell; two granddaughters, Leah Westfall and Chelsey Westfall.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, September 13, 2001, at 2 p.m., at the Carter Funeral Home, Prestonsburg, Ky.
Interment will be at the West Prestonsburg Cemetery.
Visitation is at the funeral Home.
Arnold (Scrub) Prater
Arnold (Scrub) Prater, 74, of David, Ky., died Wednesday, September 5, 2001, at Highlands Regional Medical Center, Prestonsburg, Ky., following an extended illness.
Born on November 23, 1926, at Goodloe, Ky., he was the son of the late Miley Prater and Laura Hicks Prater. He was a member of the Rock Fork Regular Baptist Church, Garrett, Ky., a retired self-employed coal operator, member of the D.A.V. Chapter 128, Garrett, Ky., and a member of the David Fire Department.
Survivors include his wife, Bernice Hamilton Prater.
Other survivors include one son, Von Trenton Prater of David, Ky., and his wife, Terry Burchett Prater; one daughter, Caren Shepherd of David, Ky.; and her husband, Russell Shepherd; one brother, Charles Prater of Pikeville, Ky.; two sisters, Lona Hall of Allen, Ky., Ruth Prater of Prestonsburg, Ky.; daughter-in-law, Janis Arnett Prater of David, Ky.; six grandchildren, Brian K. Prater, Joshua V. Prater, Christopher J. Prater, Zeth Shepherd, Kimberly Prater Slone, Cheresh Shepherd; one great-grandson, Gavin D. Slone, and one step-great-grandson, Logan G. Stumbo.
He was preceded in death by one son, Don Edward Prater; three brothers, Ralph Prater, Kennith Prater, and Earnest Prater; and one sister, Viola Johnson.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, September 9, 2001, at 12 noon, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, Ky., with Regular Baptist ministers officiating.
Burial will be in the Davidson Memorial Gardens, Ivel, Ky., under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home.
Visitation will be at the funeral home after 4 p.m., on Friday, and anytime Saturday, and before services on Sunday.
Joseph D. Wells
Joseph D. Wells, age 66, of Columbus, Ohio, died Wednes-day, September 5, 2001, at St. Ann’s Hospital.
Born February 8, 1935, in Wheelwright, Ky. An avid fisherman, enjoying his annual summer trips to Rice Lake, Ontario, Canada. He also enjoyed his annual summer trips to Rice Lake, Ontario, Canada. He also enjoyed touring Ohio with the “Country Gospel Boys, ” a gospel band that he formed with this son, Roy. Member of East Columbus CCCU. Formerly attended Gahanna Freewill Baptist Church and Brookside Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank N. and Liza Wells; one brother, Hobert Wells; a sister, Wilda Kohler, and infant sister, Thelma.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Ruby Lawson Wells.
Other survivors include two sons, Joseph D. (Sharon) Wells Jr.; Roy L. (Cheryl) Wells; brothers, Hershel (Marlene) Wells and James Wells; one sister, Macel (Donnie) Hatfield; 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Funeral services will be held at the Schoedinger Northeast Chapel, 1051 E. Johnstown Rd. (on US Route 62, 1/2 mile northeast of Hamilton Rd.), Gahanna, Saturday, September 8, 2001, with Pastor Ray McDaniel Jr., officiating.
Interment will follow at Kingwood Memorial Park.
Family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Friday, at the Schoedinger Northeast Chapel.

Bill Crisp
Bill Crisp, age 54, of Betsy Clark Branch, Martin, Ky., husband of Mary Francis Baldwin Crisp, passed away Sunday, September 2, 2001, at his residence.
He was born April 18, 1947, in Martin, Ky., the son of the late Jake Crisp and Dallis Warrens Crisp. He was a retired American Standard employee, and was affiliated with the Rockhouse Freewill Baptist Church, Paintsville, Kentucky.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Stacy Reed of Martin, Ky.; one brother, Don Crisp of Plymouth, Ohio; two sisters, Betty Owens of Clarksville, Tenn.; Ann Combs of Carthage, Ind., and one grandchild, Austin Reed.
Funeral services for Bill Crisp will be conducted Wednesday, September 5, 2001, at 1:00 p.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, Ky., with the clergymen, Richard Williams and Ronnie Spriggs, officiating.
Burial will follow in the Davidson Memorial Gardens, Ivel, Ky., under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home, Martin, Ky.
Visitation is after 6:00 p.m., Monday at the funeral home.

Gerlene Case
Gerlene Case, age 67, of Honaker, Ky., passed away on Friday, August 31, 2001, at the Pikeville Methodist Hospital.
She was born May 14, 1934, the daughter of the late Sidney and Bula Steele Case.
She was a member of the Prestonsburg Church of Christ.
Survivors include her step-mother, Patsy Case of Honaker; two brothers, Eilford Case of Fremont, Ohio, and Vernon Case of Honaker, Ky.; three sisters, Cinda Kidd and Madeline Clark, both of Honaker, Ky., and Nannie Caban of Lorain, Ohio.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Milford Case, and two sisters, Pauline Ramey and Lovella Johnson.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, September 4, 2001, at 11:30 a.m., in the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, at Martin, Ky., with Bennie Blankenship and Tommy Spears officiating.
Burial was in the Case Cemetery at Honaker, Ky., under the direction of Hall Funeral Home, of Martin, Ky.
Visitation was at the funeral home.
