Kentucky Marriage Records by County

Curtis R. Layne
Curtis R. Layne, age 84, of Salyersville, KY, formerly of Martin, KY, passed away Thursday, July 5, 2001, at the Paul B. Hall Medical Center, Paintsville, KY.
He was born January 27, 1917, the son of the late Horace Layne and Sarah DeRossett Layne. He was a retired coal miner, and a member of the Fritz Church of God in Jesus Name, Fritz, KY. He was also a member of the United Mine Workers of America.
He is survived by two sons, Robert Eugene Layne and Eddie Dean Layne, both of Albion, MI; one daughter, Rose Patrick, of Salyersville, KY; and 12 grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Scott E. Layne, and two grandchildren.
Funeral services for Curtis R. Layne will be conducted Saturday, July 7, 2001, at 2 p.m. at the Hall Funeral Home, Martin, KY., with Clergymen David Collett, Larry Patrick, and Billy Ratliff officiating.
Burial will follow in the Samons Cemetery, Martin, KY, under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home, Martin, KY.
Visitation was held Thursday evening, and will be held again on Friday, after 8 a.m. at the funeral home.

Charles R. “KY” McDowell
Mansfield, Ohio - Charles R. “KY” McDowell, 73, formerly of Ashland, died Thursday, May 31, 2001, at Woodlawn Nursing Home, after an extended illness.
He was born on June 1, 1927, in Wayland, Kentucky, to Arthur and Elizabeth (Hall) McDowell. He had been a resident of Ashland most of his life, having been a service manager for area auto dealers, a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Navy, and was a member of Grove City Christian Church in Grove City, Ohio. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 25 of Richmond, Kentucky, Scottish Rite, Oleika Temple, American Legion Post 88, The Ashland Shrine Club, and the Lexington, Kentucky Shrine Club.
Surviving are his wife, Kathleen; a son, Charles; a stepson, Charles Higginbotham of Lucas, Ohio; and a stepdaughter, Michelle King, of Sacramento, California.
He was preceded in death by a son, Gary R., in 1947.
Services were held Monday, June 4, at 1 p.m., at Heyl Funeral Home, with the Rev. John Hayes officiating.
Pallbearers were: Ray V. Allen, Paul V. Allen, Larry D. Allen, J.M. Turner, Ron Kenny, and Kenny Hyle.

Alma Crowder
Alma Crowder, age 87, of Wayland, Kentucky, died Wednesday, July 4, 2001, at the McDowell Appalachian Regional Hospital, following an extended illness.
Born on July 31, 1914, at Breathitt County, Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late J. Wise Carpenter and Nannie Craft Carpenter.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon Crowder.
Survivors include two sons, Gene (Becky Honn) Crowder, of Middletown, OH., and Steve (Wendy) Crowder, of Wayland, KY.; two grandchildren, Logan Crowder and Hunter Crowder; and one brother, Bill Carpenter (Onllene), of Panama City, FL.
Graveside services will be conducted on Sunday, July 8, 2001, at 11 a.m., at the Davidson Memorial Gardens, Ivel, KY., under the direction of the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, KY.
Visitation will be held Saturday, July 7, 2001, at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home from 6 to 9 p.m.

Ranel D.“Bud” Hall
Ranel D. “Bud” Hall, 72, resident of Lake City, Florida, died Tuesday, July 3, 2001, in the Lake City Medical Center, following a long illness.
Mr. Hall was a native of Osborn, Kentucky, son of the late John and Minnie Spears Hall, and had resided in New Boston, Michigan, for many years, prior to moving to Lake City, in 1987.
Mr. Hall was a retired steelworker and was a member of Athens Baptist Church, Lake City, and was a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the U.S. Army.
Survivors include his wife, Fannie Hall, of Lake City; one son, Mallie Franklin (Lynn) Hall, of Camden, TN.; six daughters, Brenda (Larry) Kittle, of Winter Garden, Tammy Goins, of St. Cloud, Jacqueline (Ted) Jacobs, of Perryville, OH, Kim (Tony) Daniel, of Bradenton, Kristie (Hans) Akselsen, of Tenants Harbor, Maine, Michelle (Matt) Depoister, of Lake City; two brothers, James E. (Kay) Hall, and John B. Hall, both of Vinton, OH; one sister, Nola (Bill) Skeans, of Lorain, OH. Eighteen grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted, Saturday, July 7, 2001, at 10 a.m., in the chapel of Guerry Funeral Home, with Rev. Ray Lloyd officiating.
Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, Lake City. The family will receive friends, Friday, July 6, 2001, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home. Guerry Funeral Home, 4309 South First Street, Lake City, is in charge of all arrangements.

America “Merkie” Slone
America “Merkie” Slone, age 79, of Harrod, Ohio, died Tuesday, July 3, 2001, at Lima Memorial Hospital in Lima, Ohio.
Born January 11, 1922, in Knott County, Kentucky. She was the daughter of the late Winfield and Lura Gearheart Cox. She was the widow of Sidney Slone, and a former employee of the Artex Company, in Lima, as well as a homemaker.
She was a member of the Auglaize United Baptist Church at Maysville, Ohio.
She is survived by four sons, Ervin L. Slone, of Ft. Lauderdale, FL.; Delbert R. (Lou) Slone, of Waynesfield, OH.; Phillip M. (Cindy) Slone, of Harrod, OH.; and David L. (Carrie) Slone, of Lafayette, OH.; one daughter, Faye (Gary) Wireman, of Harrod, OH.; one brother, Garlan (Tommie) Cox, of Lafayette, OH.; 15 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
She was well loved by all her neices and nephews.
She was preceded in death by eight brothers: Valis, Bee, Graden, Dallas, Luther, Hobert, Allen, and Ivory Cox; three sisters: Rebecca Cox, Matilda McKinnon and Clara Ogle; and one granddaughter, Vanessa Slone.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., on Friday, July 6, 2001, at the Auglaize United Baptist Church, Maysville, Ohio.
Burial will be at the Preston Cemetery in Alger, Ohio. The Rev. Russell Manns will officiate.
Friends may call at the Hanson-Neely Funeral Home in Ada, one hour prior to the funeral services.

Jaye Hicks Wise Johnson
Jaye Hicks Wise Johnson, 86, of Dwale, KY, died Monday, July 2, 2001, at her residence in Dwale following an extended illness.
Born on March 5, 1915, in Knott County, KY, she was the daughter of the late John A. Hicks and Lizzie Gunnel Hicks. She was a retired waitress.
Survivors include one son, Jimmy Wise of Dwale, KY, and one granddaughter, Shirley Wise Willis, also of Dwale. She is also survived by one sister, Olga Trusty, of Garrett, KY.
She is preceded in death by a daughter, Shirley Wise, and four brothers, Daniel Hicks, Robert Hicks, Richard Hicks, and Joe Hicks, as well as three sisters, Alpha Chell, Mae Hicks, and Nova Oberle.
Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, July 4, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, with Omery C. Hall officiating. Burial will follow in the Allen Cemetery located at Eastern, KY, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, KY.
Visitation was at the funeral home.

Gertie Mae Thomas Johnson
Gertie Mae Thomas Johnson, age 74, of Hindman, KY, died Saturday, June 30, 2001, at Hazard Appalachian Regional Hospital, Hazard, KY.
Born on October 31, 1926, at Litt Carr, KY, she was the daughter of the late William and Nancy Jane Amburgey Everage.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Alvin Thomas, as well as her second husband, Joe Johnson. She was also preceded in death by one son, Mitchell Thomas, and three brothers, Everett Everage, John Everage, and Arthur Everage.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Denver Sumner Memorial Old Regular Baptist Church, Perry Co.
She is survived by three sons, Alfred Thomas of West Liberty, KY; Omega Thomas of Mallie, KY; and Jessie Gene Everage of La Grange, KY. She is also survived by four daughters, Mary Jane Combs of Viper, KY; Sharon Lewis of Shelbyville, KY; Zephra Ann McKinney of Litt Carr, KY; and Cathy Roark of Mallie, KY; and three brothers, Nick Everage of Happy, KY; Sam Everage of Brownstown, IN; and Troy Everage of North Carolina; as well as four sisters, Cuba Morrison of Ohio; Melba Sue Noble of Cleveland, OH; Linda Lou Farley of North Carolina; and Brenda Gay Newman of Whitesburg, KY.; and 25 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and seveal great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, July 2, 2001, at 1 p.m., at the Hindman United Baptist Church, Owens Branch, Hindman, KY, with Eli Smith, Donnie Patrick and others, officiating.
Burial was in the Thomas Family Cemetery, Red Fox, KY, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, KY.

Pauline “Poppy” Helton
Pauline “Poppy” Helton, age 94, of Warsaw, Indiana, died Saturday, June 30, 2001 at the home of her daughter, in Warsaw.
Born July 28, 1906, to the late William Singleton Flannery and Martha Frazier Flannery in Martin, Kentucky, she was a homemaker and the wife of the late Bennie Helton, whom she married on March 24, 1927.
She is survived by two sons, Troy Helton, of Walkerton, IN, Roger Helton, of North Manchester, IN, and five daughters, Mrs. Dennis (Ruth) Johnson, of Silver Lake, IN, Sue Smith, of Warsaw, IN, Mrs. Loren (Dorothy) Bishop, of Cicero, IN, Ethel Woodling, of Warsaw, IN, and Mrs. Lynn (Alice) Reichert, of Washburn, WI.
She is also survived by 26 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she is preceded in death by four sons, one daughter, ten brothers, and eight sisters.
Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday, July 3, 2001, at 2 p.m., at the Claypool Full Gospel Tabernacle, Claypool, IN, with the Reverend Ralph Dotson officiating. Burial was in the Graceland Cemetery, Claypool, IN. Funeral arrangements were conducted by DeLaughter-McKee Mortuary North Manchester Chapel.
