Jackie Layne Hall, age 52, of Lackey, Ky., passed away Friday, June 15, 2001, in the Jewish Hospital, Louisville, Ky.
He was born November 21, 1949, in Drift, Ky., the son of the late Dock Hall and Judy Howell Hall. He was a mechanic.
Survivors include one brother, Raymond Hall of Lackey, Ky.; three sisters, Hattie Staggs and Roberta Hall, both of Lackey, Ky., and Helen Galati of Marion, Oh.
Funeral services for Jackie Layne Hall were conducted Monday, June 18, 2001, at 11:00 a.m., in the Martin Branch Freewill Baptist Church, at Estill, Ky., with Clergymen Buddy Jones and Red Morris officiating.
Burial followed in the E.W. Hall Cemetery, Jack’s Creek, Ky., under the professional care of Hall Funeral Home.
Visitation was Sunday at the church.
Pallbearers: Christopher Hall, Helen Galati, Edith Skeans, Roger Watkins, Tony Conley and Marcus Gibson.
William Harold May
William Harold (Bill) May, 80, of Prestonsburg, Ky., died Wednesday, June 20, 2001, at St. Joseph Hospital, following a brief illness.
Born on October 3, 1920, in Garrett, (Floyd County) Ky., he was the son of the late Elijah Brown May Sr. and Mary Barney May. He was a sign builder and painter employed at May Sign/Unisign, at Ivel, Ky., and was a member of the Community United Methodist Church, Prestonsburg.
He was a World War II Army veteran, having served in the European Theater.
He is survived by his wife, Lucille Sexton May.
Other survivors include one brother, Elijah B. (E.B.) May Jr. of Prestonsburg, and several nephews and nieces.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, June 23, at 11 a.m., at the Community United Methodist Church, with Rev. Steven Pescosolido officiating.
Interment will be in the May Cemetery (Mays Branch), Prestonsburg, under the direction of Carter Funeral Home, Prestonsburg.
Visitation is 4 p.m., until 9 p.m., Friday, at Carter Funeral Home.
Clarence R. Terry
Clarence R. Terry, age 70, of Castalia, Oh., and formerly of Lackey, Ky., passed away on Thursday, June 14, 2001, at his residence after a long illness.
He was born December 29, 1930, at Lackey, Ky., the son of the late Sam and Ruthie Reynolds Terry. He was retired from Routh Packaging Co. in Sandusky, Ohio, after 25 years of service. He was a member of the Church of God, and a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Korean Conflict.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Terry of Castalia, Oh.; two daughters, Theresa L. Moore of Martin, Ky., and Cindy D. Eckert of Tiffin, Ohio; one son, Kenneth R. Terry of Tiffin, Oh.; four sisters, Beatrice Boyd of Sandusky, Oh., Augustas Stanley of Clyde, Oh., Nellie Roberts of Weeksbury, Ky. and Elizabeth Cook of Somerset, Ky.; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, June 18, 2001, at 1:00 p.m., in the Hall Funeral Chapel at Martin, Ky., with J.M. Sloce and Pastor Richards officiating.
Burial was in the Reynolds Cemetery at Mallie, Ky., under the direction of Hall Funeral Home.
Visitation was after 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Additional services were conducted nightly at 7:00 p.m.
Elizabeth “Lizzie” Shell Miller
Elizabeth “Lizzy” Shell Miller, 86, died Saturday, June 16, 2001, at Highlands Re-gional Medical Center, following an extended illness.
Born May 31, 1915, in Inez (Martin County), Ky., she was the daughter of the late James S. Shell and Martha Adkins. She was a homemaker and member of the Tom Moore Memorial Freewill Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Miller, May 27, 1994.
Survivors include three sisters, Mary Altvater of Upper Sandusky, Ohio, Dorothy Baker of Nancy, Ky., Angeline Howell of Prestonsburg, Ky.; two brothers, Henry Shell of Prestonsburg, Ky., and Roosevelt Shell of Salyersville, Ky.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, June 19, 2001, at 11:00 a.m., at the Carter Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Clifford Austin officiating.
Burial was in the Clyde Miller Cemetery, Spurlock Road, Prestonsburg.
Arson Crider
Arson Crider, 92, of Van Lear, Ky., died Fri-day, June 15, 2001, at the Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Cen-ter, following failing health for some time.
Born November 24, 1908, in Edgar, (Floyd County) Ky., he was the son of the late Jake Crider and Cora McGuire. He was a tire recapper, employed at Crider Brothers Tire Service. He was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Norma Collins Crider, January 12, 2001.
Survivors include one brother, Marvin Crider of Cordova, Alabama; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Ottway Crider, Sam Crider and Woodman Crider; and one sister, Anis Goble.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday, June 17, 2001, at 2:00 p.m., at the Carter Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Roger Goble officiating.
Burial was in the Crider Family Cemetery, Johns Creek Road, Van Lear, Ky.
Oscar B. Smith
Oscar B. Smith, age 82, of Bypro, Ky., husband of Georgia Shumate Smith, passed away Sunday, June 17, 2001, at the St. Joseph Hospital, Lexington, Ky.
He was born September 28, 1918, in Carr Creek, Ky., the son of the late William B. Smith and Tinie Bowen Smith. He was a retired electrician for Inland Steel and Island Creek Coal Companies, and a U.S. Navy, World War II veteran.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Jerry B. Smith of Banner, Ky., Mark L. Smith of Ivel, Ky., and one sister-in-law, Wilma Davis of Frankfort, Ky.; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Hobert Smith, and one sister, Ethel Osborne.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, June 20, 2001, at 11:00 a.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, Ky., with Clergyman Louie Ferrari officiating.
Burial will follow in the Davidson Memorial Gardens, at Ivel, Ky.
Visitation is after 6:00 p.m., Monday, at the funeral home.
Jamima D. Qualls
Jamima D. Qualls, 94, of Brandon, Fl., passed away June 17, 2001, while under the care of Life Path Hospice.
Survivors include her two sons, Barry Qualls and Larry Qualls; two daughters, Kathleen Cribbs and Virginia Lee Bradley; four grandchildren, Jimmy Ray Key, Garry Lee Key, Rodney Cribbs and Glenda J. Brasher; several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
A native of Alphoretta, Ky., she came to the Tampa area in 1953. Mrs. Qualls was a homemaker, and a member of The Church of God.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 19, at noon, at Hillsboro Memorial Funeral Home.
Patsy R. Bryant
Patsy R. Bryant, 59, of Albion, Michigan, passed away Wednesday, June 13, 2001, at her home.
She was born July 12, 1941, to Lonza and Maxie (Casebolt) Burke in Virgie, Kentucky.
On August 22, 1959, she married
Earl Burke, he preceded her in death in 1989. Since 1977 Patsy was a nursing home administrator for an Adult Foster Care Home in Albion. She enjoyed traveling, gardening and bird watching.
Survivors include: four daughters, Annette and Richard Ewers of Albion, Sue and Brett Ward of Springport, Gail and Duane Gollnick of Reading, Michelle Bryant of Albion; four sons, Tony and Georgia Bryant of Climax, Allen Bryant of Portage, Dale and Melissa Bryant of Springport and Marcus Bryant of Albion; two sisters, Fontella Mann of Homer and Ann Izzard of Litchfield; six brothers, Jerrel D. Burke of Homer, Grover Burke of Coldwater, Lonza Burke Jr. of Albion, Garner Burke of Quincy, Craig Mullins of Albion, Gary Newsome of Homer; and 13 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one grandchild, three brothers and one son.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 16, 2001, 1 p.m., at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home Inc., 811 Finley Drive, Albion, with Reverend Tom Duff officiating.
Interment followed at St. Joe Cemetery in Clarendon Township.
