Jackie Layne Hall, age 52, of Lackey, Ky., passed away Friday, June 15, 2001, in the Jewish Hospital, Louisville, Ky.
He was born November 21, 1949, in Drift, Ky., the son of the late Dock Hall and Judy Howell Hall. He was a mechanic.
Survivors include one brother, Raymond Hall of Lackey, Ky.; three sisters, Hattie Staggs and Roberta Hall, both of Lackey, Ky., and Helen Galati of Marion, Oh.
Funeral services for Jackie Layne Hall were conducted Monday, June 18, 2001, at 11:00 a.m., in the Martin Branch Freewill Baptist Church, at Estill, Ky., with Clergymen Buddy Jones and Red Morris officiating.
Burial followed in the E.W. Hall Cemetery, Jack’s Creek, Ky., under the professional care of Hall Funeral Home.
Visitation was Sunday at the church.
Pallbearers: Christopher Hall, Helen Galati, Edith Skeans, Roger Watkins, Tony Conley and Marcus Gibson.
Hezzie Samons Sr.
Elder Hezzie Samons Sr., age 85, of Banner, Ky., husband of Bessie Conn Samons, passed away Monday, June 11, 2001, at Highlands Regional Medical Center, Prestonsburg, Ky.
He was born August 23, 1915, at Dana, Ky., the son of the late Grover and Virgie Akers Samons. He was a retired coal miner, member of the Little Salem Old Regular Baptist Church, Dana, Ky., and member of the UMWA Local No. 9845.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by seven sons, Lowell Samons (Mary), of Banner, Ky., Troy Samons (Linda) of Banner, Ky., Coy Samons (Linda) of Banner, Ky., Hezzie Samons, Jr., (Donnette) of Ashland, Ky., Dan Samons (Ada) of Banner, Ky., Bert Samons of Ashland, Ky., Wilburn Ray Samons (Gina) of Banner, Ky.; two daughters, Wanda Marcum (Gilbert) of Banner, Ky., Dovie Damron (Robert) of Allen, Ky.; one brother, Norman Samons of Orange City, Fl.; one sister, Oma Conn of Indiana; 21 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Ivory Samons; two sisters, Clara Conn and Dovie Boyd, and two grandchildren, Misty Samons and Dow Hezzie Samons.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m., Thursday, June 14, 2001, at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, Ky., with Regular Baptist ministers officiating.
Burial will follow in the Davidson Memorial Gardens, Ivel, Ky., under the care of Hall Funeral Home, Martin, Ky.
Visitation is after 1:00 p.m. Tuesday and 8:00 a.m. Wednesday.

Theodore (Ted) E. Stratton
Theodore Earl Stratton, age 75, of CO RD 25, Cardington, died Monday morning, June 6, 2001, at OSU Medical Center in Columbus.
He was born August 17, 1925, to the late Sparrel R. Stratton, Sr. and Flora (Wright) Stratton.
Ted was a retired Oil Field Business Owner and was a WWII veteran serving in the 82nd Airborne Division.
He was married
to Patsy Ruth Hunt Stratton who preceded him in death on March 13, 1998.
He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Sandra L. and Paul Mullins of Mt. Gilead; one granddaughter and her husband, Tammie R. & Bobby Stephen of Palm Bay, Florida; one grandson, Kevin S. Mullins of Mt. Gilead and a grandson and his wife, Chad V. and Julie Mullins of Cardington; one great-granddaughter, Ariana (Rylie) Mullins and one great-grandson, Braedon S. Mullins of Cardington.
Also surviving is one brother, Roy Pritchard Stratton of Readyville, Tennessee; and four sisters, Betty Flanery of Langley, Kentucky, Jo Inmon of Banner, Kentucky, Edith Steele of Harold, Kentucky, and Rosemary Meade of Stanville, Kentucky.
In addition to his parents, and wife, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Henry Edward Sratton, James Paul Stratton, Richard D. Stratton and Sparrel “Russell” Stratton and two sisters, Virginia Harris and Octavia Cooley, and one grandson, Gregory Mullins.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 9, at 1 p.m., at the Gompf Funeral Home, Cardington, with burial in Glendale Cemetery.
Brian Hughes
Brian Hughes, age 27, passed from this life Sunday, June 10, 2001, at the University of Kentucky Medical Center, after a three-year battle with acute leukemia. He was a native of Hi Hat, Ky., in Floyd County, and a 1991 graduate of McDowell High School.
Brian is survived by his wife, Rhonda Goble Hughes; his parents, Earl and Linda Hughes, of Hi Hat, Ky.; a sister, Earlene Stumbo of Crittenden, Ky.; a brother, Malcom, of Lenoir, N.C.; his grandparents, Ed and Juanita Caudill, of Hi Hat, Ky.; Haley Hughes, of Prestonsburg, Ky.; and a host of relatives and friends.
Brian was a member of the Hi Hat Church of God of Prophecy, where he served as Youth Director. He was continually witnessing to his friends about Christ, whether it was fishing with them on a boat or riverbank, riding with them on four-wheelers, or at meetings at the local gas station. During his hospital stays, he was engaged in witnessing to visitors and planning things to do with his youth group. Brian will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.
Services were conducted Monday, June 11, 2001, at 7:00 p.m., at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, and Tuesday, June 12. The funeral will be at 1:00 p.m. at the Church of God of Prophecy at Hi Hat on Wednesday, June 13.
Burial will be in the Moore Family Cemetery, at Price, Ky., under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, Ky.
Pallbearers: Morris Tackett, Eric Moore, Dwayne Bryant, Jason Stumbo, Stevie Caudill, Chris Moore, Roger Martin, and Ryan Goble.
Honorary pallbearers: Tikee Hall, Ernie Moore, Bill McGuire, Joe Goble, Wesley Gearheart and Ron Goble.
The family wishes to thank everyone for their support in the blood drive for Brian, all the fundraising endeavors that were done, the donations that were given, and most of all for their prayers.
Birdie Stidham
Birdie Stidham, 69, of Sturgis, Mi., died Friday, June 8, 2001, at her residence.
Born November 1, 1931, in Gunlock, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Archie Shephard and Mary (Shepherd) Shephard. She was an employee of Plyleys Candies-LaGrange Co. Hospital. She came from Kentucky in 1958 to the Sturgis-LaGrange area.
She is survived by her husband, Russell M. Stidham.
Other survivors include her children, Harvey and Karen Stidham of Howe, Ind., Victor and Vonda Stidham of Van Lear, Ky., Hager and Brandy Stidham of Vandalia, Mich., Donald Stidham, Steve and Casey Stidham, all of Goshen, Ind.; eight sisters, six brothers and 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, June 11, 2001, at 10 a.m., at the Frurip-May Funeral Home, LaGrange, with Rev. Leburn Combs officiating.
Burial was in the Brighton Cemetery, Howe, Ind., under the direction of Frurip-May Funeral Home, LaGrange, Ind.
Visitation was at the Frurip-May Funeral Home.
Elmer Hughes Ferguson
Elmer Hughes Ferguson, age 85, of Wheelwright, Ky., husband of Edna Mae Ferguson and widower of Hazel Mae Blair Ferguson, died Saturday, June 9, 2001, at Our Lady of the Way Hospital, Martin, Ky.
He was born June 8, 1916 in Harold, Ky., a son of the late Josh and Rosa Skeens Ferguson. Elmer was a retired preparation plant superintendent for Inland Steel and National Mines, a World War II Army Staff Sergeant, a member of the Wheelwright United Methodist Church, a Wheelwright City mayor for 23 years, served as a board member on the Big Sandy Area Development Agency, Prestonsburg, served on an advisory committee for the Prestonsburg Community College and the McDowell Appalachian Regional Hospital. He was the Republican party chairman for Floyd County for several years, a Kentucky Colonel and avid University of Kentucky supporter.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Amber Elizabeth Ferguson Hines of Indian Springs, Oh., Deborah Ann Ferguson Hall and Cathleen Elaine Ferguson Johnson, both of Wheelwright, Ky.; three step-daughters, Vivian Hall and Judy Dawson, both of Plymouth, Oh., Freda Compton of Aivaton, Ky., several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were two brothers, Howard Ferguson and Clayton Ferguson and one sister, Lora Ferguson McKnight.
Funeral services for Elmer Ferguson were conducted Tuesday, June 12, 2001, at 1:00 p.m., at the Wheelwright United Methodist Church, Wheel-wright, Ky., with Rev. Bobby Isaac officiating.
Burial followed in the Davidson Memorial Gardens, Ivel, Ky., with the Hall Funeral Home caring for those arrangements.
Visitiation was at the Hall Funeral Home.
Pallbearers: Jody Hall, Russ Hall, Josh Johnson, Ryan Johnson, Steven Hall, Chad Hall, Stacy Hall, and Tom Hughes.
Grace Kirk Rowe
Grace Kirk Rowe, age 87, of Prestonsburg, Ky., widow of Clarence Rowe, died Sunday, June 3, at her residence.
She was born November 6, 1913, in Breeden, WV, a daughter of the late Wilson and Polly Marcum Kirk. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Prestonsburg.
Survivors include one son, Lloyd Charles Rowe, Edgewater, Fla.; two daughters, Eleanor Rowe Taylor, Ft. Pierce, Fla., and Dr. Mable Rowe Lineberger, Prestonsburg; one brother, Howard Kirk, Dunlow, WV; one sister, Mable Blackburn, Ft. Pierce, Fla., five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Memorial service for Grace Kirk Rowe will be conducted Saturday, June 9, at 11 a.m., in the First Presbyterian Church, Prestonsburg.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests, donations to Hospice of Big Sandy, P.O. Box 277, Hager Hill, KY 41222.

Melvin Matthew Stevens
Melvin Matthew Stevens, 72, of Harold, Ky., died Friday, June 1, 2001, at his residence, following an extended illness.
Born on May 23, 1929, in Floyd County, Ky., he was the son of the late Jesse Stevens and Gracie Justice Stevens. He was a retired foreman and lineman. He was a member of the Toler Creek Freewill Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Dolly Howell Stevens.
Other survivors include eight sons, Palmer Stevens, Archie Wayne Stevens, Joie Ray Stevens, James Charles Stevens, Phillip Ray Stevens, Mark Stevens, and Todd Stevens, all of Harold, Ky., and Christopher Scott Stevens of Lexington, Ky.; two daughters, Violet Tackett and Melinda Sue Keathley of Harold, Ky.; one sister, Lizzie McKinney of Harold, Ky.; three half-sisters, Maggie Howell of Harold, Ky., Alice Kendrick of Pikeville, Ky., Mary Jane Potter of Ohio; one half-brother, Leonard Stevens of Harold, Ky., 20 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Bradley Stevens; seven brothers, McClellan Stevens, Ervin Stevens, Azzie Stevens, Ezralee Stevens, Jerry Stevens, Bennie Stevens, Walker Stevens; and two half-brothers, Roy and Louie Stevens; three sisters, Vadie McKinney, Zadie Stevens and Effie Tackett.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, June 4, 2001, at 1 p.m., at the Toler Creek Freewill Baptist Church, at Harold, Ky., with Rev. Herb Goff officiating.
Burial was in the Stevens Family Cemetery, Harold, Ky., under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, Ky.
Saturday and Sunday services were conducted by Ousley Freewill Baptist Church.
Visitation was at the Funeral Home, Saturday and Sunday, and at the church on Monday.
