Grace Williams Meade, 94, of Pikeville, died Monday, February 26, 2001, at the residence of her daughter at Hi Hat, following an extended illness.
Born on November 26, 1906, in Blackberry, she was the daughteer of the late John and Louisa Hembree Younce. She was a retired cook at Mullins school, and was a member of the Little Nancy Old Regular Baptist Church at Hi Hat.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Raney Williams and later by her second husband, Steve Meade.
Survivors include two sons, Donald T. Williams of Pikeville, Lowell Williams of Flat Rock, Michigan; six daughters, Treva W. Wallace of Southgate, Michigan, Joetta Sorenson of Kosskia, Idaho, Uthana Williams Hunt of Taylor, Michigan, Juanita Williams Compton of Price, Kathleen Meade Turner and Madeleline Meade Miller, both of Pikeville; one sister, Carrie Slone of Elkhorn City; 47 grandchildren, 55 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, March 1, at 11 a.m., at the Little Nancy Old Regular Baptist Church at Hi Hat, with ministers of the Old Regular Baptist Church officiating.
Burial will be in the Davidson Memorial Gardens, at Ivel, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin.
Visitation is at the church after 4 p.m. today (Wednesday).
James Edgle Slone
James Edgle Slone, 48, died Friday, February 23, 2001, in the Central Baptist Hospital, Lexington.
He was born January 15, 1953, in Prestonsburg, the son of Draxie Mae Hall Slone of Ligon, and the late Arthur Slone. He was owner and operator of J. & S. Battery Service, at Hippo.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Green Slone.
Other survivors include one son, Jason Ross Slone of Hippo; two brothers, Delbert Slone of Huntington, Indiana, Jimmy Clayton Slone of Ligon; two sisters, Darlene Vance of Neon, and Geraldine Thornsberry of Andrews, Indiana.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, February 26, at 11 a.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, at Martin, with Coy Combs and other Regular Baptist ministers officiating.
Burial was in the Hicks Cemetery at Hippo.
Pallbearers were Shane King, Dewey Collins, Ronnie Conley, Terry Williams, Chris Wireman, Rick Prater, Carl Cooley, Nick Green, Roger Prater and Chad Niese.
Honorary pallbearers were Ronnie Stewart, Fred Mullins and Greg Mullins.
Lillis Hughes Conn
Lillis Hughes Conn, 88, of Harold, died Sunday, February 25, 2001, at the Pikeville Methodist Hospital.
Born on July 18, 1912, in Knott County, she was the daughter of the late Ida Slone Williams and Will Williams. She was the former operator of Kelly Shoe Store, and a member of the Regular Baptist Church.
She was thrice married; first to Kelly Adams, later to Charles Hughes, and then to Mallie Conn. Each preceded her in death.
Survivors include one son, Gordon Adams of Marietta Mississippi; one daughter, Laureda Gail Justice of Harold; one brother, Roy Williams of Jackson, Ohio; one sister, Dixie Williams Harlow of Mayking; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, February 27, at 1 p.m., at the J.W. Call & Son Funeral Home, with Regular Baptist ministers officiating.
Burial was in the Johnson Memorial Park.
Active pallbearers were Gary Hamilton, B.J. Elswick, Danny Adkins, David Rowe, Mark Meade, Charles Owens and Elster Justice.
Honorary pallbearers were Mason Kelly Meade, Caleb Meade, Morris Justice, Foster Thacker, Ron Tackett, Johnny Dean Adkins, Sonny Charles and Frank Justice.
William E. (Willie) Spence
William E. (Willie) Spence, 79, of Tomahawk, died Friday, February 23, 2001, at the Williamson Memorial Hospital.
Born on January 28, 1922, in Mingo County, West Virginia, he was the son of the late Hugh Spence and Lona Ferrell Spence. He was a retired postal worker, a veteran of the Air Force and was a member of American Legion Post 45.
He is survived by his wife, Thelma Howell Spence.
Survivors include one daughter, Anita Louise Brown of Palatka, Florida; four brothers, Hubert Spence of Wellersburg, Ohio, Don Spence of Warrencliff, West Virginia, Daleno Spence of Delaware, Ohio, Doug Spence of Ohio; four sisters, June Benidict, Lorane Spence, Tina Faye Spence and Regina Spence; three grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, February 27, at the Phelps & Son Funeral Home, Inez, with Willie Goble and Danny Hall.
Burial was in the Spence Cemetery, Bent Branch, Rockhouse.
Grover Edison Montaigne
Grover Edison Montaigne, 42, of Lexington, formerly of Knott County, died Thursday, February 22, 2001, at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington, following an extended illness.
Born on March 21, 1958, in Kite, he was the son of Emogne Thornsberry Montaigne of Hindman, and the late Boyd Edison Montaigne. He was disabled.
Survivors include two brothers, Arnold Steven Montaigne of Lehigh Acres, Florida, Billy Joe Montaigne of Texas; three half-brothers, Robert Montaigne of North Carolina, E.J. Montaigne of Somerset, Larry Montaigne of North Carolina; one sister, Janet Montaigne of Hindman and half sister, Margie Williams of Pinetop.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday, February 26, at 11 a.m., at the Hindman United Baptist Church at Hindman, with ministers of United Baptist Church officiating.
Burial will be in the Frank Thornsberry Cemetery, at Kite, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home.
Travis Joel Slone
Travis Joel Slone, 21, of Hindman, died Friday, February 23, 2001, at U.K. Medical Center, Lexington, following a brief illness.
Born on February 2, 1980, in Pikeville, he was the son of Burton Slone of Louisville and Etta Mae Slone Holland and J.C. Holland of Hindman. He was disabled.
Survivors include one brother, Burnis Wayne Holland of Deane; four sisters, Theresa Gibson of Deane, Lea Etta Weimann, Teresa Forrest and Jeannie Gibson, all of Fisty.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday, February 26, at 11 a.m., at the Ivy Point Old Regular Baptist Church at Garner, with Terry Collins, Eugene Thacker, and Hurley Short officiating.
Burial will be in the Slone Cemetery, at Topmost, under the direction of the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home.
John Hamilton Jr.
John Hamilton Jr., 83, of Teaberry, died Thursday, February 22, 2001, at the Pikeville Methodist Hospital, following an extended illness.
Born on June 16, 1917, in Floyd County, he was the son of the late John Hamilton and Mindy Newsome Hamilton. He was a retired coal miner, and was a member of the U.M.W.A. at Ligon.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lizzie Hamilton.
Survivors include five sons, Charlie Dotson of Dayton, Ohio, Donald Ray Hamilton, Emmitt Eugene Hamilton, and Bobby Hamilton, all of Teaberry, Ricky Hamilton of Pikeville; four daughters, Norma Perdue of Southgate, Michigan, Ailene Tripodi of Livonia, Michigan, Margie Castillo of Beaver, Christine Combs of Teaberry; two brothers, Keenis Hamilton of Florida, Clifford Hamilton of Teaberry; one sister, Sarah Hamilton of Ohio, 35 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, February 24, at 11 a.m., at the Samaria Old Regular Baptist Church, at Teaberry, with ministers of the Old Regular Baptist Church officiating.
Burial was in the John Hamilton Cemetery, at Teaberry, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin.
Charles Wilburn Mullins
Charles Wilburn Mullins, 71, of Myra, died Thursday, February 22, 2001, at Whitesburg Appalachian Regional Hospital.
Born at Garrett, on May 19, 1929, he was the son of the late Wilburn and Della Mullins. He was a retired employee of Great Lake Steel and was of the Freewill Baptist Faith.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Mullins.
Other survivors include three daughters, Louise Mullins, Dinah Gayheart, and Charlene Bentley, all of Myra; six sons, Roger Mullins of Myra, Bruce Mullins of Bean Station, Tennessee, Ralph Mullins, Kenny Mullins, Ricky Mullins, and Randy Mullins all of Myra; two sisters, Alka Mullins of Ecorse, Michigan, Virginia Tipton of Old Fort, North Carolina; and one brother, Victor Mullins of Jenkins; 20 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, February 25, at the Pilgrim Rest Old Regular Baptist Church, at Myra, with Teddy Tackett, Clyde Bentley, Lloyd (Popeye) Brown, Danny Belcher, Carson Wright, and others officiating.
Burial will be in the Mullins Cemetery of Lickfork at Myra, under the direction of R.S. Jones & Son Funeral Home.
