Beulah Anna Walker, 90, of Tram, died Saturday, February 17, 2001, at her residence, following an extended illness.
Born on December 24, 1910, in Tram, she was the daughter of the late L.D. Layne and Allie Caldwell Layne. She was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy at Tram.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Byrd Walker.
Survivors include three sons, Johnny Walker of Prestonsburg, Charles Walker of Tram, Darvin Walker of Grethel; four daughters, Francis Branham of Prestonsburg, Edith Meeks of Staffordsville, Olga Goble of Auxier, Anna Ruth Leslie of Florida; two sisters, Dolores Hicks and Nell Straton, both of Tram; 22 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, February 20, at noon, at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, with Denver Meade and Larry Tackett officiating.
Burial was in the Davidson Memorial Gardens, at Ivel.
Curtis Knox
Curtis Knox, 69, of Denniston, formerly of Wayland, did Sunday, February 18, 2001, at his residence.
He was born March 24, 1931, at Wayland, the son of the late Howard and Ada Hicks Knox. He was a retired coal miner for National Mines, attended Pine Grove Community Church at Ezel, and was a member of the U.M.W.A. local 1741, and a member of the Wayland Volunteer Fire Department.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sadie Knox.
Survivors include two sons, David Knox of Auxier, Glenn Knox of Martin; four brothers, Burnis Knox, Ernest Knox, Arnold Knox, and Arvin Knox, all of Kendallville, Indiana; four sisters, Hettie Lucas of Garrett, Hattie Hicks and Berta Mae Compton, both of Kendallville, Indiana, Brenda Conley of Martin; one half brother, Kenneth Knox of Grassy Creek; one half sister, Brenda Ross of Ezel; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, February 21, 1 p.m., at Pine Grove Community Church, Ezel, with ministers Jerry Manns, Earl Slone and Gary Stamper officiating.
Burial will be in the Knox Family Cemetery, at Denniston, under the direction of Hall Funeral Home, Martin.
Serving as pallbearers for the funeral of Curtis Knox were Ronnie Knox, Ricky Knox, James Knox, Josh Knox, Brian Ratliff, Charles Ratliff and Bill Potter.
Honorary pallbearers were Cilas “Cybo” Rictcaie, George Potter and Jim Ratliff.
Della Conley Moore
Della Conley Moore, 94, of Langley, died Saturday, February 17, 2001, at the Our Lady of the Way Hospital, Martin.
She was born October 15, 1906, in Garrett, the daughter of the late Clabe Conley and Renie Chaffins Conley.
Her husband, Mander Moore, preceded her in death.
Survivors include three sons, Virgil Moore of Waverly, Ohio, Julius Moore and James Earl Moore, both of Langley; seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, February 20, at 11 a.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, with the clergyman, Bethel Bolen, officiating.
Burial was in the Moore Family Cemetery, at Langley.
Pallbearers were: Ron Moore, Ed Salisbury, Glenn Moore, Shane Moore, Jason Moore and Ryan Salisbury.
Harry Gordon McCarty
Harry Gordon McCarty, 91, of Olympia, died Friday, February 16, 2001, at the St. Claire Medical Center, Morehead.
He was born March 28, 1909, in Paintsville, the son of the late Burns McCarty and Maude Hall McCarty. He was a retired mine safety inspector and was a member of the Masonic Lodge.
Survivors include one son, Gordon Lee McCarty of Jeffersonville, Ohio; two daughters, Dolores Lafferty of Inez, Peggy J. Swartz of Olympia; two sisters, Coleen Fowler and Lavonda Smock, both of San Francisco, California; 13 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday, February 18, at 1:30 p.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, with the clergyman, Lewis Porter, officiating.
Burial was in the Davidson Memorial Gardens, at Ivel.
Pallbearers were Tom Lafferty, Randy Lafferty, Larry Lafferty, Gary Lafferty, Mark Swartz, Mike Swartz and Scott Swartz.
Ishmael (Poppy) Thornsberry
Ishmael (Poppy) Thornsberry, 76, of Kite, died Friday, February 16, 2001, at the Hazard Appalachian Regional Hospital following a brief illness.
Born on March 2, 1924, in Knott County, he was the son of the late Alamander and Lucy Mullins Thornsberry. He was a retired coal miner.
He is survived by his wife, Stella Slone Thornsberry.
Other survivors include two sons, Ershel Thornsberry and Danny Thornsberry, both of Kite; two daughters, Leslie Sparkman of Kite, Crevia Gibson of Raven; three sisters, Clara Slone and Bertha Watson, both of Kite, Dona Thornsberry of Massachusetts, eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, February 19, at 11 a.m., at the Providence Old Regular Baptist Church at Topmost, with ministers of the Old Regular Baptist Church officiating.
Burial was in the Bates Cemetery, at Kite, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin.
Lois Ann Hoag
Lois Ann Hoag, 61, of Albion, Michigan, died Saturday, February 17, 2001, at her home.
She was born November 30, 1939, in Betsy Layne, the daughter of Castle and Alice Lynch Collins. She was a former member of the Marengo Methodist Church, the Marengo Extension Group, and a 4-H leader.
She is survived by her husband, Raymond S. Hoag Jr.
Other survivors include his parents, Castle and Alice Collins of Betsy Layne; one daughter, Sharon Leeann Nelson of Albion; one son, Rick Steven Hoag of Quincy; two brothers, Larry Gene Collins of Betsy Layne, Danny Joe Collins of Sevierville, Tennessee; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, February 21, at 1 p.m., at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home, Albion.
Interment will be at Albion Memory Gardens.
Johnathan Tyler Shepherd
Johnathan Tyler Shepherd, 19 months old, son of John Shepherd of Salem, Indiana, and Bianca Sumner Shepherd of Crandall, Georgia, died Wednesday, February 14, 2001, at the T.C. Thompson Childrens Hospital in Chattanooga, Tennessee, following a sudden illness.
He was born on June 22, 1999, in Dalton, Georgia.
He is survived by his maternal grandparents, Charles and Debra Woods of Crandall, Georgia; paternal grandfather, John Asher Shepherd Sr., of Chicago, Illinois; paternal grandmother, Judy Cornette of Chicago, Illinois; paternal step-grandfathter, Toby Cornette of Chicago, Illinois; two sisters, Tabitha Shepherd and Tori Sumner, both of Crandall, Georgia.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday, February 18, at 11 a.m., at the Kodac Church of God, at Vicco, with Bobby Bank, Lloyd Bowling, and Truman Hunt officiating.
Burial was in the Jenkins Cemetery, at Vicco, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin.
John Hatcher Allen
John Hatcher Allen, 62, of Royalton, died Thursday, February 15, 2001, at his residence.
Born on November 2, 1938, in Magoffin County, he was the son of the late Hatcher Allen and Grace Prater Allen. He was a retired Pullman Standard employee and was of the Pentecostal faith.
Survivors include two sons, John Dewayne Allen and Anthony Allen, both of Michigan City, Indiana; two daughters, Louise Steinhiser and Carolyn Cook, both of Michigan City, Indiana; three brothers, Lonzo Allen of Cedar Lake, Indiana, Paul Ed Allen of Beaver Dam, Jerry Ray Allen of Royalton; eight sisters, Mornie Lorraine Whitworth of Harvest, Alabama, Virginia Parker of Cedar Lake, Indiana, Bernice Risner of Crown Point, Indiana, Amanda Lula Begley, and Ruth Irene Baize, both of Royalton; Linda Meade, Ella Faye Burke and Alice Mae Stevens, all of Prestonsburg; and several grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday, February 18, at the Magoffin County Funeral Home Chapel, Salyersville, with Simon Porter and Mike Smith officiating.
Burial was in the Hatcher Allen Cemetery, Puncheon Creek, under the direction of Magoffin County Funeral Home.
Sandy Tackett
Sandy Tackett, 31, of Galveston, daughter of Jonah and Bonnie Hall Tackett, died Thursday, February 15, 2001, at her residence.
She was born November 28, 1969, at Pikeville.
Survivors, other than her parents, include one son, Madison Tackett of Galveston, and one sister, Candi Tackett of Galveston.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday, February 18, at the Little Rachel Regular Baptist Church, Galveston, with Regular Baptist ministers officiating.
Burial was in the Greenberry Hall Cemetery, Galveston, under the direction of Hall Funeral Home, Martin.
