Emma Nadine Belcher Akers
Emma Nadine Belcher Akers, 73, of Betsy Layne, died Tuesday, February 6, 2001, at her residence, following an extended illness.
Born on March 17, 1927, in Pike County, she was the daughter of the late Ned and Lou Ratliff Belcher. She was a retired factory worker for Nabisco, and a member of the Church of Christ at Betsy Layne.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hayden Akers.
Survivors include one son, Frankie Stratton of Verner, West Virginia; one daughter, Mary Ann Grimmett of Gibert, West Virginia; one brother, Leonard Donald Belcher of Florida; three sisters, Opal Henton of Betsy Layne, Anna Morgan of Elkhorn City, Lois Jean Webber of Lakeland, Florida, three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, February 9, at 11 a.m., at the Church of Christ at Betsy Layne, with Thomas Spears officiating.
Burial will be in the Wilson Cemetery, at Draffin, under direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin.

Eura Lou Burke
Eura Lou Burke, 65, of Bevinsville, died Tuesday, February 6, 2001, at her residence, following an extended illness.
Born on December 16, 1935, in Hall, Knott County, she was the daughter of the late Lee and Mary Johnson Jones.
She is survived by her husband, Hobert Burke.
Other survivors include three sons, Jerry Wayne Burke, Roy Dean Burke, and John Paul Burke, all of Bevinsville; one daughter, Tammy Wonette Burke of Belcher; one sister, Barbara Ashworth of Bluefield, Viginia; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, February 9, at 11 a.m., at the Little Rock Old Regular Baptist Church, Bevinsville, with ministers of the Old Regular Baptist Church officiating.
Burial will be in the Silas Burke Cemetery, at Bevinsville, under direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin.

Garry Blaine Mullins
Garry Blaine Mullins, 64, of Lexington, formerly of Dorton, died Tuesday, February 6, 2001, at the U.K. Medical Center.
Born on January 17, 1937, in Dorton, he was the son of the late Fonso and Verna Smallwood Mullins. He was a retired heavy equipment operator and was a veteran of the Air Force.
Survivors include two daughters, Luanna Mullins Tackett of Lexington, Shawna Mullins Timmerman of Lexington; three brothers, Lowell Reed Mullins of Lexington, Stoney Eric Mullins of Kimper, Dale Greg Mullins of Pikeville; three sisters, Regis Lynne Mattingly of Ashland, Grethley Gail Redd of Chicago, Illinois, Sherry Gywnn Bundy of Pikeville; and one grandson.
Memorial services will be Monday, May 28, at noon, at the Mullins Family Cemetery at Dorton.
Arrangements are under the direction of R.S. Jones & Son Funeral Home, Virgie.

Hillard Akers Jr.
Hillard Akers Jr., 62, of Bevinsville, died Thursday, February 8, 2001, at McDowell Appalachian Regional Hospital, following an extended illness.
Born on May 15, 1938, in Bypro, he was the son of the late Hillard and Laura Johnson Akers. He was a disabled miner and a veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include two sons, Keith Akers and Danny Akers, both of Virginia; two daughters, Charlene Hall of Huntington, Indiana, Judy Akers of Florida; one half-brother, Bill Reed of Bevinsville.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, February 11, at 1 p.m., at the Little Rock Old Regular Baptist Church at Bevinsville, with ministers of the Old Regular Baptist Church officiating.
Burial will be in the Buckingham Cemetery, at Bevinsville, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin.

Robert R. “Bobby” Lawson
Robert R. “Bobby” Lawson, 47, of Harold, died Wednesday, February 7, 2001, at Prestonsburg, following a sudden illness.
Born on December 17, 1953, in Michigan, he was the son of Loene Hatcher Lawson of Harold, and the late Randall (Tootie) Lawson. He was a disabled truck driver, a member of the Betsy Layne Church of Christ, a Kentucky Colonel, and a member of the Coon Hunters Association.
Survivors include two daughters, Jennifer Marie Lawson of Dana, Elizabeth Ann Lawson of Portland, Oregon; one brother, Johnny Lawson of Harold; three sisters, Charlene Carrell of Dana, Debbie Rogers of Harold, Laura Burfor of Ecorse, Michigan; and one grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, February 11, at 1 p.m., at the Betsy Layne Church of Christ, with Thomas Spears officiating.
Burial will be in the Lawson Family Cemetery, at Harold, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin.

Thomas Ray Crum
Thomas Ray Crum, 56, of Willard, Ohio, formerly of Arkansas, Martin, died Tuesday, February 6, 2001, at his residence, following an extended illness.
Born on November 22, 1944, in Printer, he was the son of the late Kinner and Vida Yates Crum.
He was a retired railroad worker, and a veteran of the United States Army.
Survivors include one son, Jerome Crum of Tiffin, Ohio; two daughters, Vida Holmes of Willard, Ohio, Bonnie Holmer of Attica, Ohio; four brothers, Jake Crum and Elisha Crum, both of Martin, Sterlin Crum of California and Joseph Crum of Texas; three sisters, Verlie Ortman, and Nova Crum, both of Norwalk, Ohio, Ruth Borgo of Gary, Indiana; and eight grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, February 10, at 2 p.m., at the Drift Pentecostal Church, with Ted Shannon officiating.
Burial will be in the Adkins Cemetery, Arkansas, Martin, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin.

Virgle Press Prater
Virgle Press Prater, 80, of Warsaw, Indiana, died Monday, February 5, 2001, at St. Joseph Hospital, Ft. Wayne, Indiana.
Born on July 3, 1920, in Prestonsburg, he was the son of the late Robert Prater and Lula Whitaker Prater. He had resided in Kosciusko County, Indiana for 41 years. He was a retired city street department employee. He was a former member of the United Baptist Church, and attended God’s Highway to Heaven, Warsaw, Indiana.
He is survived by his wife, Pearlie Prater.
Other survivors include five daughters, Juanita Shepherd, Geneva Bayne, Phyllis Varney, Mary Kendall, and Barbara Prater, all of Warsaw, Indiana; five sons, Wilford Prater, Cliff Prater, and Ron Prater, all of Warsaw, Indiana, Don Prater of Claypool, Indiana, Arnold Prater of Silver Lake, Indiana; one sister, Nancy Manuel of Prestonsburg; two brothers, Cedi Prater of Springport, Michigan, Clyde Prater of Olivet, Michigan; 38 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday, February 8, at Titus Funeral Home, Warsaw, Indiana, with Reverend Bob Brown and Rev. Henry Arnett officiating.
Burial was in the Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw, Indiana.

William “Brother” Clay
William “Brother” Clay, 82, of Ligon, died Tuesday, February 6, 2001, at Highlands Regional Medical Center, Prestonsburg, following an extended illness.
Born on July 15, 1918, in Carter County, he was the son of the late Ed and Laura Evans Clay. He was a retired coal miner, a member of the U.M.W.A., and a member of Masonic Lodge No. 889, Wheelwright.
He is survived by his wife, Mahala Mae Mullins Clay.
Other survivors include one son, William Ronald Clay of Jamestown; three daughters, Blanche Patton of Lawrenceburg, Katheline Caudill of Martin, Nesba Dailey of Ligon; one sister, Katheline Reynolds of Harold; 14 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, February 9, at 11 a.m., at the Joppa Old Regular Baptist Church at Melvin, with ministers of the Old Regular Baptist Church officiating.
Burial will be in the Dave Mullins Cemetery, Melvin, under direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin.

Belvey Newsome
Belvey Newsome, 85, of Hi Hat, died Friday, February 2, 2001, at the McDowell Appalachian Regional Hospital, following an extended illness.
He was born July 4, 1915, in Wayland, the son of the late William Newsome and Rebecca Jones Newsome. He was a retired coal miner, a member of the UMWA, and a member of the Joppa Old Regular Bapitst Church, at Melvin.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Leona Johnson Newsome.
Survivors include one son, Jerry Newsome of Hi Hat; three daughters, Joan Newsome of Wayne, Michigan, Celesta Merryman of New Carlisle, Ohio, Violet Teresa McKinney of Bypro; one sister, Saria Silvey of Ligon; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, February 6, at 11 a.m., at the Joppa Old Regular Baptist Church, at Melvin, with Regular Baptist ministers officiating.
Burial was in the Newman Cemetery, at Hi Hat, under the direction of Hall Funeral Home, Martin.
Pallbearers were John Merryman, Chad Merryman, Joe Merryman, Shannon McKinney, Fred Fick and William Lee.
Honorary pallbearers were Tammy Fick, Charlotte Pioli and Kennesa McKinney.
