Nola Arrowood Jennings, 91, of Drift, died Wednesday, February 28, 2001, at Highlands Regional Medical Center, Prestonsburg.
She was born November 21, 1909, in Meally, the daughter of the late Willie K. Arrowood and Rose Preston Arrowood. She was a member of the Baptist Church, at Meally.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Jennings.
Survivors include one son, Bill Mac Jennings of Polar Grove, Illinois; one brother, Bill Arrowood of Drift; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, March 3, at 2 p.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, with the clergyman, Ted Shannon, officiating.
Burial will be in the Davidson Memorial Gardens, at Ivel.
Opal Bush Conn
Opal Bush Conn, 85, of Harold, died Wednesday, February 28, 2001, at Highlands Regional Medical Center, Prestonsburg, following an extended illness.
She was born January 22, 1916, in Toler Creek, the daughter of the late Webster Bush and Annie Clark Bush. She was a school teacher, worked at the Food Stamp Office, was a former timekeeper at the county garage, and was a member of the Lower Toler Church of Christ, at Harold.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Conn.
Survivors include one daughter, Peggy Ann Tackett of Harold, four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, March 3, at 11 a.m., at the Upper Toler Church of Christ, at Harold, with the clergyman, James Hubert Harmon, officiating.
Burial will be in the Bobby Joe Conn Cemetery, at Harold, under the direction of Hall Funeral Home.
Serving as pallbearers for the funeral of Opal Bush Conn were Palmer Bush, Billy Bush, Jason Bush, Richard Meade, Tommy Bush, Jimmy Looney, Jim Wadell and George Ellste.
Honorary pallbearers were Jack Bush, Dick Salisbury, Charles Salisbury and John Henry Salisbury.
Orville Elliott
Orville Elliott, 88, of Warsaw, Indiana, died Friday, February 9, 2001, at the Kosciusko Community Hospital, Warsaw, Indiana.
Born on November 27, 1912, in Prestonsburg, he was the son of the late William Elliott and Sara Jane Rose Elliot. He was a grain farmer and was a resident of Kosciusko County since 1956; a member of the Frances Slocum Trail Riders Club in Peru, Indiana, and a Horse Trader.
His wife, Mary B. Stephens Elliott, preceded him in death.
Survivors include two daughters, Anna Blair of Warsaw, Indiana, Linda Justice of Milford, Indiana; five sons, John Elliott and Henry Elliott, both of Warsaw, Indiana, James Elliott of Etna Green, Indiana, Tommy Elliott of Tennessee, Bill Elliott of Claypool, Indiana; one sister, Rosie Robinson of West Prestonsburg, 31 grandchildren, 75 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, February 13, at 1 p.m. at Titus Funeral Home, Warsaw, Indiana, with Reverend Jasper Blake officiating.
Burial was in the Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw, Indiana.
Maryland “Burl” Joseph
Maryland “Burl” Joseph, 61, of Martin, died Tuesday, February 27, 2001, at the Highlands Regional Medical Center.
He was born May 17, 1939, at Prestonsburg, the son of the late Corbin and Crecie Prater Joseph. He was a retired Sargeant Major with the United States Army, a member of the Blue River Baptist Church, a life member of the DAV Chapter 18 of Auxier, and a member of the VFW of Martin.
He is survived by his wife, Ruby Dove Joseph. Other survivors include one son, Burl Vernon Joseph of Bel Air, Maryland; one daughter, Marjorie Joseph of Forest Hill, Maryland; one brother, Hershel Joseph of Van Lear; and one grandson.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, March 2, at 1 p.m., at the Floyd Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Vernon Slone officiating.
Burial will be in the Gethsemane Gardens at Auxier.
Ralph Owens
Ralph Owens, 56, of Burkesville, formerly of Helena, Ohio, and Prestonsburg, died Wednesday, February 21, 2001, at T.J. Samson Community in Glasgow.
Born on December 31, 1944, in Floyd County, he was the son of the late Butler and Ina Webb Owens. He was a retired Chrysler Corporation employee and of the Protestant faith.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Snyder Owens.
Other survivors include three sons, Glenn Owens of Rising Sun, Ohio, Joey Owens of Burkesville, and Jamie Owens of Helena, Ohio; a daughter, Linda Owens of Pemberville, Ohio; two brothers, Roy Owens and Troy Owens both of Blue River; three sisters, Mabel Hackworth of Prestonsburg, Elsie Rahrig of Blue River, and Brenda Shepard of David.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, February 24, in Memory Chapel of Norris-New Funeral Home, Burkesville, with Gary Cash officiating.
Burial was in the Burkesville Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers were Tom Reed, Jim Harris, Jeff Mowers, Dale Rife, Darrell Davis and Durwood Bard.
An honorary pallbearer was Lloyd Smith.
I.D. Back
I.D. Back, 75, an Old Regular Baptist minister who had preached numerous funerals in Floyd County and surrounding counties, died Tuesday, January 23, 2001, at Letcher Manor Nursing Home in Whitesburg.
He was moderator of Mount Olivet Old Regular Baptist Church in Blackey and Blair Branch Church at Jeremiah, both in Letcher County, as well as Little Dove Old Regular Baptist Church in Knott County.
He was born July 4, 1925, near Blackey. He was a World War II veteran, having fought in the Battle of the Bulge, and had worked as a meat packer and a miner.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ina Rose Hamilton Back. Surviving are a daughter, Sherry S. Fugate of Blackey, two sons, Ronald W. Back and Anthony W. Back, both of Blackey, and other relatives, including a nephew, Joe Back of Prestonsburg.
Funeral services will be today (Friday), at 1 p.m., at Mount Olivet Old Regular Baptist Church, under the direction of Letcher Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Whitaker-Back Cemetery at Blackey.
Carl Steele
Carl Steele, 73, of Betsy Layne, died Tuesday, January 23, 2001, at his residence, following a brief illness.
Born on July 29, 1927, in Justill, he was the son of the late J. W. (Pockets) Steele and Fannie Porter Steele. He was retired from the United States Navy, and a retired car salesman for Big Y Auto Sales. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 169 at Betsy Layne, and the VFW at Martin. He was an honorary Floyd County deputy sheriff.
He is survived by his wife, Marelin Goins Steele.
Other survivors include one son, Carl Edward Steele of Oakland, California; one daughter, Joanna Reid of Martin; one sister, Helen Robinette of Phoenix, Arizona; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, January 27, at noon, at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, with Tracy Patton officiating.
Burial will be in the Davidson Memorial Gardens, at Ivel.
Miles “Buck” Thornsberry
Miles “Buck” Thornsberry, 82, of Empire, Alabama, formerly of Knott County, died Tuesday, January 23, 2001, at his residence, following an extended illness.
Born on August 8, 1918, in Knott County, he was the son of the late Webb and Alice Hall Thornsberry. He was a retired machine operator for Rollex Industries.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mattie Perry Thornsberry.
Survivors include two sons, Larry Thornsberry of Elmore, Mississippi, Edison Thornsberry of Kite; five daughters, Louise Racliff of Empire, Alabama, Shirley Carlson of Melrose Park, Illinois, Ruby Thornsberry of Litt Carr, Emogene Montaigne of Hindman, Becky Mason of Elk Grove, Illinois; five brothers, Ed Thornsberry of Elizabethtown, Coleman Thornsberry of Topmost, Johnny Thornsberry of Prestonsburg, Freeman Thornsberry and Charlie Thornsberry, both of Detroit, Michigan; one sister, Verlin Thornsberry of Kite, 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, January 28, at 11 a.m., at the Rebecca Old Regular Baptist Church, at Kite, with ministers of the Old Regular Baptist Church officiating.
Burial will be in the King Cemetery, at Kite, under direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin.
