Uble Coy Elswick, 76 of Westmore Land, Tennessee, formerly of Virgie, passed away Friday, January 5, 2001, in the Macoo County General Hospital. He was born January 25, 1924, in Hartley. He was the son of the late Willie and Corille Hampton Elswick. He was a retired machinist mechanic and a former truck driver.
He was survived by one son, Bradley Elswick of Detroit, Michigan.; one daughter, Loriene Akers of Westmoreland, Tennessee; two brothers, Herbert Elswick and Hubert Elswick, both of Virgie; seven great grandchildren, eight grandchildren and five step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Hessie Virginia Goodin, two brothers, William Elswick Jr. and Travis Elswick; one sister, Belvie Elswick; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 8, at 11 a.m., at the Long Fork Regular Baptist Church of Virgie, with Minister Monroe Jones officiating.
Visitation was held at the church on Saturday and at 6 p.m. Sunday, with nightly services at 7 p.m. Interment will be at Elswick Cemetery in Virgie, under the direction of R.S. Jones and Son Funeral Home of Virgie.
Hubert Clayton Gambill
Hubert Clayton Gambill, 81, of Paintsville, died Friday, December 29, 2000, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Huntington, West Virginia.
Born December 9, 1919, in Pike County, he was the son of the late Lawrence C. Gambill and Oma Drago Gambill. He was self-employed at Gambill’s Electric. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Leona Painter Gambill.
Other survivors include one son, Michael Gambill, and one stepson, James G. Payne, both of Prestonsburg; two daughters, Virginia L. Gambill and Kathy Kirk, both of Paintsville; two brothers, Frank Gambill of Berea and Marvin Gambill of Cincinnati, Ohio; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, January 1, at the Jones-Preston Funeral Chapel, Paintsville, with Rev. Wayne Fields and Rev. Jimmy Jennings officiating.
Burial was in the Highland Memorial Park, at Staffordsville, under the direction of Jones-Preston Funeral Home.
Sarah Margie Elkins
Sarah Margie Elkins, 84, of Harold, died Tuesday, January 2, 2001, at her residence, following a sudden illness.
Born on March 2, 1916, in Pike County, she was the daughter of the late Johnnie King and Clara Pruitt King. She was a member of the Cynthiana United Baptist Church at Boldman.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Elkins.
Survivors include two sons, Billy J. Elkins of Harold, Ralph E. Elkins of Winchester; three brothers, Willie King of Cannonsburg, Albert P. King of Betsy Layne, John Paul King of Louisa; three sisters, Olgie Layne of Boldman, Dolly Senters of Loraine, Ohio, Roxie Justice of Harold; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, January 5, at 11 a.m., at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, with ministers of the United Baptist Church officiating.
Burial will be in the Neeley Family Cemetery, on Abbott, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home.
Helen Irene Butcher
Helen Irene Butcher, 72, of Williamsport, died Tuesday, January 2, 2001, at the Paul B. Hall Medical Center, Paintsville.
Born on November 27, 1928, in Johnson County, she was the daughter of the late Arthur Branham and Martha Hall Branham. She was a cook at Carl D. Perkins Rehabilitation Center.
She is survived by her husband, Eddie Butcher.
Other survivors include three sons, Charles Eddie Butcher of Williamsport, Darrell Butcher of Oil Springs, and Leonard Butcher of Salyersville; four daughters, Mary Jo Christian, Lorene Johnson, Betty Buskirk, all of Williamsport, and Virginia Frasure of Freeburn; two brothers, Lester Branham of Van Lear, and Willodean Brooks of Columbus, Ohio, 16 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, January 5, 1 p.m., at the Jones-Preston Funeral Chapel, Paintsville, with Ellis Hamilton, David A. Meek and Hub Billiter officiating.
Burial will be in the Butcher Family Cemetery, Williamsport, under the direction of Jones-Preston Funeral Home.
James E. McClanahan
James E. McClanahan, 72, of New London, Ohio, died Friday, December 29, 2000, at Fisher Titus Medical Center, Norwalk, after an extended illness.
He was born May 1, 1928, in Owsley, the son of the late Willie F. and Goldie Adkins McClanahan. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He worked at the former Nickles Bakery in New London as a driver for several years; at Ohio Body Manufacturing in New London until it closed; and at Anvil Industries in Wellington, until his retirement. After retirement he worked part-time at Firelands Electric in New London. He was an active member of the New London Church of Christ.
He is survived by three daughters, Beverly Fogle and Deborah Gardner, both of New London, and Wanda Patton of Akron; four brothers, Arlin McClanahan of Michigan, Joe McClanahan of St. Louis, Missouri, Tommy McClanahan and William McClanahan both of New London; two sisters, Myrtle Hinchman and Marie Clapp, both of Indiana; six grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and 2 step-great-grandsons.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, January 2, 2001, at the New London Church of Christ, with minister Charles Mead officiating.
Burial, with military rites, was in the Grove Street Cemetery, New London.
Jim Wagner
Jim Wagner, 92, of Flatwoods, formerly of Floyd County, died Monday, January 1, 2001, at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital, Ashland.
Born on May 27, 1908, he was the son of the late Mary Boyd Wagner and N.L. Wagner. He was a coal miner and member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include one son, Howard Wagner, of Raceland; two daughters, Genevieve Obroff of Flatwoods and Sylvia Lee Little of Piketon, Ohio; four grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday, January 4, at the J.W. Call Funeral Home, with Tommy Spears and James Hubert Harmon officiating.
Burial was in the Ferguson Cemetery, at Harold, under the direction of J.W. Call & Son Funeral Home.
William “Bill” Perry
William “Bill” Perry, 99, of Harold, died Saturday, December 30, 2000, at his residence, following an extended illness.
Born on March 8, 1901, in Clinchport, Virginia, he was the son of the late Thurman and Metilda Rogers Perry. He was a disabled coal miner.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Roxie Lawson Perry.
Survivors include one daughter, Geneva Welch of Kingsport, Tennessee; one half-sister, Katie Iams of Amherstdale, West Virginia, two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday, January 2, 2001, at 11 a.m., at the Upper Toler Creek Church of Christ, at Harold, with Tommy Bush and others officiating.
Burial was in the Roberts and Howell Cemetery, at Harold, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin.
Alvin P. Fields
Alvin P. Fields, 68, of Allen, died Friday, December 29, 2000, at his residence, following an extended illness.
Born on December 31, 1931, in Allen, he was the son of the late Ara and Cynthia Louranie Porter Fields. He was a retired veteran of the United States Army, and was a member of the Emma United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Judith Diana Hager Fields
Other survivors include one son, Larry H. Fields of Garrett, three stepsons, Ronald Frasure Jr. of Prestonsburg, Dwight Alan Frasure of Allen, Barry T. Frasure of Martin; two daughters, Sandra Yocum of New Jersey, Sharon Wilfong of Illinois; one step-daughter, Shari Crisp of Winchester; one brother, Claude Fields of Titasville, Florida; six grandchildren, one great-grandchild, two stepgrandchildren, and two step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, January 2, 2001, at 1 p.m., at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, with Paul Aiken officiating.
Burial was in the Davidson Memorial Gardens, Ivel, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home.
Birtha Henderson
Birtha Henderson, 57, of Deane, died Friday, December 29, 2000, at her residence.
Born on September 8, 1943, in Floyd County, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Tippy Ann Mitchell Newsome.
She is survived by her husband, Charles Meade.
Other survivors include three sons, Joe Hall and Madison Hall, both of Taylor, Michigan, Ronald Hall, both of Deane; one daughter, Teresa Gibson of Knott County; three brothers, Frank Newsome of Johnson County, Andy Ray Newsome of Meade County, Robert Newsome of Hi Hat; two sisters, Marie Gilliam and Pluma Jean Gilliam, both of Floyd County; 15 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday, December 31, at 11 a.m., at the Little Nancy Old Regular Baptist Church at Hi Hat, with Spencer Hall and other Regular Baptist ministers officiating.
Burial was in the Drift Cemetery, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin.
