Timothy D. Conley, 39, of Dwale, formerly of Hueysville, died Wednesday, December 25, 2002, at Maytown, following an automobile accident.
He was born October 29, 1963, in Martin, the son of Saundra Bentley Conley of Martin, and the late Elwood Conley. He was a welder/carpenter.
In addition to his mother, other survivors include one daughter, Tiffany Leann Prater of Hueysville; three brothers, Darin Conley and Ronald Conley, both of Hueysville; and Frank Conley of Louisville; one sister, Twila Barnett of Lexington; his paternal grandmother, Cordelia Conley of Hueysville; eight nieces and nephews, and a girlfriend, Laverne Sexton of Dwale.
He was preceded in death by his father; paternal grandfather, the late Milton Conley, and maternal grandparents, the late Norman and Mabel Moore Bentley.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, December 28, at 1 p.m., at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, with Jerry Manns and others officiating.
Burial will be in the Bentley Cemetery at Stone Coal in Garrett, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home.
Curtis Akers
Curtis Akers, 70, of Betsy Layne, died Tuesday, December 24, at the Pikeville Methodist Hospital.
Born June 5, 1932, at Amba, he was the son of the late Robert and Lillie Hall Akers Martin. He was a retired laborer for Elliott Glass and was a member of the Mouth of Mud Church of Christ, at Harold.
He is survived by his wife, Darlene Salisbury Akers of Betsy Layne.
Other survivors include one son, Billy Ray Akers of Pikeville; one daughter, Melanie Marie Bolden of Tram; two brothers, Roby Akers of Harold, and Jake Akers of Grethel; and two grandchildren, Makayla Dawn Bolden and Kenneth Preston Bolden.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six sisters, Carlie Sturgill, Stella Salisbury, Pearl Thacker, Nancy Mulkey, May Akers and Ruby Akers.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, December 28, at 1 p.m., at the Church of Christ (Mouth of Mud), Harold, with Elbert Lawson and Johnny Pugh officiating.
Burial will be in the Roberts Cemetery at Harold, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin.
Visitation is at the church, with services nightly, at 7 p.m.
Clifford Hunter
Clifford Hunter, age 75, of New London, died Monday morning, December 23, at his home after a lengthy illness.
He was born November 20, 1927, in Trace Branch, Floyd County, Kentucky, the son of the late J.B. and Rebecca (Spurlock) Hunter. He grew up in the Trace area. As a young man he had worked in the local coal mines and was a mail carrier on horseback for the Blue Moon, Kentucky area. He and his new wife, moved to New London in 1948, where he worked for 27 years at the E. Bigelow Co. in New London as a fireman. He had also worked for 12 years at the Rockwell Corp. in Wellington until his retirement in 1988. He was a member of the Fitchville Church of Christ. He was a devoted father, grandfather and friend to many. He enjoyed traveling, bowling, fishing, and gardening.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Elouise (Hall) Hunter; a son and daughter-in-law, Cordell and Mary Hunter of New London; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Ron Hamilton of New London; three sisters, Ocie Hall of New London, Dorothy Carpenter of Grove City, Ohio, and Delphia Hall of Printer, Kentucky; six grandchildren and five step-grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by three sons, Glendale Hunter, Kevin Hunter and Ottis Hunter; a daughter, Alma Faye Hunter; five brothers, Columbus, Oliver, Arnold, Erman and Tennessee Hunter; and a grandson, Jason Hunter.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, December 27, at 1 p.m., at the New London Church of Christ, 130 Third St., with Pastor Charles Mead and Earl Parsons officiating.
Burial will follow at the Fitchville Cemetery, under the direction of Eastman Funeral Home.
Jesse Laferty
Jesse Laferty, age 98, of Allen, husband of the late Zelda Lou Samons Laferty, passed away Friday, December 20, 2002, in the Highlands Regional Medical Center, Prestonsburg.
He was born January 23, 1904, in Endicott, (Edgar), the son of the late William Laferty and Sarah Burchfield Laferty. He was a retired railroad worker (oiler and packers), and was a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include three sons, Herbert Dean Laferty of Allen, Donald Rudolph Laferty of Clearfield, and Herman Keith Laferty of Cub Run; three daughters, Maxine Thacker of Wurtland, Valerie Hall of Allen, and Sarah Glennis Lowe of Palm Coast, Florida, 16 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and several step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Jesse Laferty were conducted Monday, December 23, at 11 a.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, with Clergyman James Edward Robinson officiating.
Burial was in the Davidson Memorial Gardens, at Ivel, under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home.
Visitation was at the funeral home.
Pallbearers: Neil Laferty, Donnie Laferty, Larry Laferty, David Hall, Jim Thacker, Daryl Laferty, Denny Laferty and Keith Laferty.
Eugle Martin
Eugle Martin, age 70, of Hilliard, Ohio, died Thursday, December 19, 2002, at her residence. She was a member of the Bellevue Baptist Church, Bellevue, Ohio.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie and Dora Bentley; brothers, Sam and Virgil Bentley; and sister, Polly Bentley.
She is survived by her husband of 50 years, John Lewis Martin; children, Rick Martin, Vicki Caudill, and Tim Martin and families; grandchildren, T. J. Caudill, Ashley Caudill, Andrew Martin, Karly Martin, Katlyn Hobby, Tyler Hobby, and Gareth Martin; brothers, Vernace, Don, Ron and Tom Bentley; a sister, Janice Salyers.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Saturday, December 21, with Elders Roy Smith, Hubert Caudill and Charles Smith officiating.
Interment was in Kingwood Memorial Park, under the direction of Tidd Funeral Home, 5265 Norwich St., Hilliard, Ohio.
Flowers will be graciously accepted, or in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice, at Riverside and Grant.
Visitation was at the funeral home.
Irene J. Reitz
Irene J. Reitz, age 74, of Drift, passed away on Sunday, December 22, 2002, in the McDowell Appalachian Regional Hospital after an extended illness.
She was born March 3, 1928, at Drift, the daughter of the late Lester and Lizzie Miller Judd.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Salisbury United Methodist Church, and the Drift Women’s Club.
She is survived by her husband, Belford Reitz of Drift; one step-son, Belford Reitz Jr., and wife, Barbara, of Blaine, Minnesota; one step-daughter, Peggy Lattery and her husband, Bill; one sister, Josephine Hobson of Winchester; four nieces, Sue Brown, Cathyleen Hukle, Carol Whitlock and Irene Wilson; six nephews, Benny Hobson, Jack Hobson, Johnny Judd, Mark Judd, Tommy Judd and Lester Judd.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, December 24, at 1 p.m., in the Hall Funeral Home in Martin, with Ted Shannon and Bobby Lawson officiating.
Burial was in the Drift Cemetery, at Drift.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Hall Funeral Home.
Walter Nelson
Walter Nelson, 67, of Pres-tonsburg, died Wednesday, December 18, at the Highlands Regional Medical Center, Prestonsburg.
Born April 27, 1935, at Coley, he was the son of the late Homer Nelson Sr., and the late Pearlie Jane Hackworth Nelson. He was a retired auto body mechanic, and a member of Third Avenue Freewill Baptist Church at Prestonsburg.
He was twice married; first to Roberta Adams Nelson, and later to Mary L. Blankenship Nelson. Both preceded him in death.
Survivors include one son, Don Nelson of Prestonsburg; one daughter, Dian Music of Prestonsburg; two brothers, Johnny Wayne Nelson and Ronnie Dean Nelson, both of Prestonsburg; three sisters, Eva Adams of North Manchester, Indiana, and Geneva Whitaker and Vickie Poe, both of Prestonsburg; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Virginia Ratliff of Banner.
In addition to his parents, and his wives; he was preceded in death by two brothers, Homer Nelson Jr., and Rebel Nelson; and two sisters, Shelby Jean Prater and Deloris Nelson.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, December 21, at 1 p.m., at Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home Chapel, in Martin, with Manford Fannin and Richard Crisp officiating.
Burial was in the Nelson Family Cemetery at Richardson Branch in Prestonsburg, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home.
Visitation was at the funeral home.
Palestine (Newsom) Newsome
Palestine (Newsom) New-some, 75, of Carpenter Road, Ashtabula, died unexpectedly, Sunday, December 15, 2002, at Ashtabula County Medical Center.
She was born April 12, 1927, in McDowell, the daughter of the late Shelby and Burnette (Hall) Newsom and had been an Ashtabula resident most of her life.
Mrs. Newsome was a member of Lily of the Valley, Old Regular Baptist Church for 35 years, where she was very involved during her younger years. She also wrote beautiful poetry and enjoyed cooking and crafts.
Her survivors include her husband, Chester, whom she married
August 22, 1942; 10 children, Carlotta Schlick of Dunnellon, Florida, Randy Newsome of Beverly Hills, Florida, Janette Davis of Concord, Roger D., Ron, Fred, and Gary Newsome, all of Ashtabula; twins, Carl Newsome of Cleveland and Janet McCraken of Geneva, and Sandra David of Ashtabula; 26 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and one sister, Roberta Frasure of McDowell.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sons, Ricky W. Newsome on October 24, 1998, and Michael Ray Newsome; one brother, Paul Newsome and her parents.
A service was held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, December 18, at the Lily of the Valley Old Regular Baptist Church, S.R. 84 and Kiwanis Park Drive, Geneva. Scott Hamilton, Evan Hamilton, Larry Newsome, and Jessie Pack, all of the Old Regular Baptist Church, officiated.
Burial was in Ridgeview Cemetery.
Visitation was at the Ducro Funeral Home, 4524 Elm Avenue, Ashtabula.
