April Lynn (Mullins) Dean, age 31, of Jupiter, Florida, passed away on November 23, 2002, due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident. April was born on August 15, 1971, in Columbus, Ohio. April is the daughter of Rosa Lee and Virgil Mullins Jr. of Topmost.
April is survived by her husband, Christopher Dean and one son, Patrick Drew Dean, both of Jupiter, Florida. April is also survived by one sister, Jessica Nicole Slone of Martin. She is also survived by her paternal grandmother, Hamie Mullins of Dry Creek, KY along with a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends of which are too numerous to name individually.
April was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Ishmael and Effie Hall, both of Topmost, KY and her paternal grandfather, Virgil Mullins of Dry Creek, KY.
Memorial services are planned for Wednesday, November 27, 2002, in Jupiter, Florida. However, funeral arrangements are being planned for Topmost, KY as well, but are incomplete at press time. The public may call Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home obituary line in Martin, KY for complete details.
Lisa Ann Vanover
Lisa Ann Vanover, age 25, of Printer, passed away Sunday, November 24, 2002, at the Highlands Regional Medical Center, Prestonsburg.
She was born October 25, 1977, in McDowell, the daughter of Michael Blackburn of Beattyville, and Levita Delores Walters of Drift.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her step-father, Chillis Meade; one daughter, Sarah Kelsey Jade Vanover of Drift; one brother, Robert D. Walters of Lexington; and three sisters, Jamie Meade of Hueysville, Leslie Meade of Drift, and Miranda Blackburn.
Funeral services for Lisa Ann Vanover will be conducted Wednesday, November 27, at 2 p.m., at the Hall Funeral Home, Martin, with Ted Shannon officiating.
Burial will follow in the Drift Cemetery, at Drift, under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home.
Visitation is at the funeral home.
Hazel Ratliff
Hazel Ratliff, age 84, of Hueysville, widow of Worley Ratliff, passed away Thursday, November 21, 2002, at the Hazard Appalachian Regional Medical Center.
She was born September 14, 1918, in Magoffin County, the daughter of the late Harrison Vanderpool and Eliza Shepherd Vanderpool. She was a homemaker and a member of the Rock Fork United Christian Baptist Church, at Garrett.
Survivors include two daughters, Alta Sparkman of Willard, Ohio, and Delphia Noble of Shiloh, Ohio; one brother, Frank Vanderpool of Columbus, Ohio; two sisters, Mable Timmons of Prestonsburg, and Wanda Hicks of Hueysville; two grandchildren, Derek Sparkman and Rita Waterbeck, and two great-grandchildren, Jason Waterbeck and Derek Shannon Sparkman.
In addition for her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Marion Vanderpool and Charlie Vanderpool; and one sister, Lexie Vanderpool.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday, November 24, at 11 a.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, with Clergyman Sterlin Bolen officiating.
Burial was in the Vanderpool Cemetery, at Hueysville, under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home.
Visitation was at the funeral home.
Pallbearers: Derek Sparkman, Brian Kidd, Jason Waterbeck, Shannon Sparkman, Craig Hicks, and Denver Shepherd.
Edward L. Manuel
Edward L. Manuel, 83, who resided at 20611 State Road 331, Tippecanoe, Indiana, passed away Saturday, November 23, 2002, at 4:18 p.m., at Life Care Center of Rochester, in the presence of his family. He had been in failing health.
He was born on March 6, 1919 in Prestonsburg, the son of Mander Manuel and Geneva Harless. He had been a resident of the Tippecanoe area since 1967. He married
Polly Anna Adams in November of 1938, she passed away August 26, 1995.
He was a retired coal miner and a member of the United Mine Workers. He was a Regular Baptist with the Northern Little Dove Church in Sidney, Indiana.
He is survived by his four sons, Dallas Manuel of Bourbon, John and Patty Manuel of Warsaw, Sammy and Linda Manuel of Tippecanoe, and Robert Manuel of Warsaw. He also has nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Other survivors include his sisters, Lucy Pratter of Packerton, Indiana, Molly Holland of Salyersville, and Mary Adams of Prestonsburg; and his brother, Sam and Nancy Manuel of Prestonsburg.
He was preceded in death by his son, Roger, and granddaughter, Sandy; one sister and two brothers.
Visitation was Tuesday, November 26, from 5:30 to 8 p.m., in the Deaton Funeral Home, 115 S. Main St., Bourbon, Indiana 46504.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, November 27, at 10 a.m., in the funeral home with Clifford Newsome and Charles King officiating.
Burial will be in the Tippecanoe Cemetery, Tippecanoe, Indiana.
Deaton Funeral Home of Bourbon, is entrusted with the funeral arrangements.
Calip Lee Kidd
Calip Lee Kidd, 54, of Harold, died Thursday, November 21, 2002, at his residence.
Born July 9, 1948, in Honaker, he was the son of Mack Kidd Jr., of Prestonsburg, and the late American Damron Kidd. He was a retired coal miner and coal truck driver.
He is survived by his wife, Scharlene Collins Kidd.
Other survivors include one son, Brian Lee Kidd (wife, Evelyn) of Honaker; one daughter, Carrie Lynn Cash (husband, William L.) of Cynthiana; one sister, Margrene Newsome of Pikeville; three grandchildren, Bradley, Ashley, and Eric; and two step-grandchildren, Amanda and Nicholas.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, November 24, 11 a.m., at the Little Dove Church (Little Mud), at Printer, with Old Regular Baptist ministers officiating.
Burial will be in the Kidd Family Cemetery, Honaker, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin.
Visitation is Friday, at 5 p.m., at the funeral home.
Edgar Rose
Edgar Rose, 66, of Printer, died Thursday, November 21, 2002, at his residence.
Born March 4, 1936, in Prestonsburg, he was the son of the late John and Martha Stevens Rose. He was a disabled laborer, and a member of the Old Time Baptist Church at Printer.
He is survived by his wife, Artie Conn Rose.
Other survivors include five sons, Sammy Salisbury and Randy Salisbury, both of Printer, Edgar E. Rose, and John David Rose, both of Endicott, and Bennie A. Rose of David; one daughter, Hattie Thornsbury of David; three brothers, John Wilce Rose of Prestonsburg, William Thomas Rose of Pierceton, Indiana; and Orville Rose of Michigan; two sisters, Elizabeth Crace of Prestonsburg, and Lou Vada Collins of Pierceton, Indiana; 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Danny Salisbury; three brothers, Jim “Bo” Rose, Bennie Rose, and Andy Rose; and one sister, Polly Ousley.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, November 24, at 1 p.m., at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home in Martin, with Denver Meade and others officiating.
Burial will be in the Conn Cemetery at Printer, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home.
Visitation is Friday, at 6 p.m., at the funeral home.
Aline Akers Scarberry
Aline Akers Scarberry, age 79, of Martin, widow of Henry Smithie Scarberry, passed away Wednesday, November 20, 2002, at the Highlands Regional Medical Center, Prestonsburg.
She was born October 20, 1923, in Floyd County, the daughter of the late Kessie Akers and Nollie Mayo Akers. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church, Maytown.
Survivors include four daughters, Brenda Laferty of Rapid City, South Dakota, Faye Johnson of Columbus, Ohio, Marie Robinson of Columbia, Tennessee, and Sandra Kay Robinson of Langley; one brother, Rudolph Akers of Martin; 11 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Aline Akers Scarberry will be conducted Friday, November 22, at 2 p.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, with Clergyman Bob Varney officiating.
Burial will follow in the Martin Cemetery, at Martin, under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home.
Visitation is at the funeral home.
L. Joy Jones James
L. Joy Jones James, 73, of Prestonsburg, died Wednesday, November 20, 2002, at Highlands Regional Medi-cal Center.
Born July 31, 1929, in Floyd County, she was the daughter of the Dorthula Hall Jones of Flemingsburg, and the late Bert Jones. She was a former assistant vice-president of the First Commonwealth Bank, Prestonsburg; a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Prestonsburg; and the Floyd County Historical and Genealogical Society.
She is survived by her husband, Fred A. James.
Survivors, other than her husband and mother, include one son, Brent McCormick of Inez; one daughter, Peggy Turner of St. George, Utah; one sister, Jacqueline Newman of Flemingsburg; two step-sons, Freddie James of Prestonsburg, and Matthew James of Shelbiana; two step-daughters, Mary Ann James and Emily Anderson, both of Frankfort; 15 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, November 23, at 11 a.m., at the Carter Funeral Home Chapel, Prestonsburg, with Rev. George Love and Bishop E. P. Grigsby Jr., officiating.
Interment will be in the Sunset Memorial Park, at Flemingsburg, under the direction of Carter Funeral Home.
Visitation is Friday, 5 p.m., until 9 p.m.
