Jerry Morgan, 45, of Prestonsburg, died Monday, November 11, 2002, at the St. Joseph Hospital, Lexington, following an extended illness.
Born April 29, 1957, in Knott County, he was the son of Gladys Hall Morgan of Wayland; and the late Graden Morgan. He was a bank collections agent and advisor at the Job Corps.
Survivors include one son, Joshua Morgan and one daughter, Crystal Leann Morgan, both of Prestonsburg; two brothers, Graydon Morgan Jr. of Kite, and Donald Lee Morgan of Pike County; and three sisters, Anna Lou Mullins of Dema, Linda Faye Mullins of Raven, and Nancy Lee Hall of Wayland.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one brother, Lester Morgan.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, November 14, at 11 a.m., at Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home in Martin, with Jimmy Hall, Earl Slone and Jerry Manns officiating.
Burial will be in the Prater Family Cemetery (Left Fork, Abbott), Prestonsburg.
Active pallbearers: Dwayne Mullins, Ricky Mullins, Brent Morgan, Michael Morgan, Charlie Slone, Terry Scott, Robert (Jr.) Prater, William (Bill) Prater, Ed Prater, and Matthew Prater.
Audrey Slone Wiley
Audrey Slone Wiley, 80, of Estill, died Tuesday, November 12, 2002, at Highlands Regional Medical Center.
Born January 4, 1922, in Floyd County, she was the daughter of the late Garfield and Addie Dyer Slone. She was a homemaker and a member of the Martin Branch Freewill Baptist Church at Estill.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy R. Wiley.
Survivors include three sons, Roy E. Wiley (wife, Dannette) of Columbus, Ohio, Marvin D. Wiley (wife, Judy) of Estill, and Rodney Wiley (wife, Pamela) of Hippo; one daughter, Brenda Joyce Owsley (husband, James) of Estill; one brother, Charles Ray Slone of Estill; one sister, Josephine Martin of Estill; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one step-great-great-grandchild.
In addition to her husband, and parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Bennie Garfield Slone; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, November 14, at 1 p.m., at the Martin Branch Freewill Baptist Church at Estill, with Buddy Jones and others officiating.
Burial will be in the Davidson Memorial Gardens at Ivel, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin.
Visitation is at the funeral home.
Eloise Ward Collins
Eloise Ward Collins, age 86, of Prestonsburg, widow of Charles J.P. Collins, passed away Sunday, November 10, 2002, at the Prestonsburg Health Center, Prestonsburg.
She was born September 6, 1916, in Auxier, the daughter of the late Smith Ward and Anna Mayhan Ward. She was a member of the Community United Methodist Church, in Prestonsburg.
Survivors include three nieces, Frances Cooley and Ardena Carol Ward, both of Prestonsburg, and Sara Ann Mara, of Louisville.
Memorial services will be conducted Friday, November 15, at 11 a.m., at the Community United Methodist Church, Burke Avenue, Prestonsburg, with Clergyman Steve Pescosolido officiating.
Entombment will be in the Lawn Park Mausoleum, New Orleans, Louisiana, under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home, of Martin.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Community United Methodist Church, Burke Avenue, Prestonsburg.
Teddy Bates
Teddy Bates, 27, of Wayland, died Saturday, November 9, 2002, at Wayland, of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Born May 29, 1975, in McDowell, he was the son of Charles and Myrtle Johnson Bates of Wayland. He was a coal miner.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by one daughter, Kaley Marie Bates of Wayland; one brother, Dean Bates of Garrett, and two sisters, Patty Perkins and Shela Maynard, both of Wayland.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, November 12, at 11 a.m., at Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, in Martin, with Old Regular Baptist ministers officiating.
Burial was in the Bates Family Cemetery at Wayland.
Visitation was at the funeral home.
Brenda Calhoun Fitch
Brenda Calhoun Fitch, 56, of Dwale, died Tuesday, November 5, 2002, at the Highlands Regional Medical Center.
Born August 16, 1946, in Dwale, she was the daughter of the late Greenville and Magdalene Elliott Calhoun. She was a disabled school teacher and a member of Benedict Baptist Church in Prestonsburg.
She is survived by her husband, Gordon Fitch.
Other survivors include one sister, Iris Jean Calhoun of Dwale; and one uncle, Keith Shannon (Bucky) Elliott, who was like a brother to her.
Funeral services will be conducted (today) Friday, November 8, at 1 p.m., at Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home in Martin, with Doug Lewis and Jim Smith of Ravenna, officiating.
Burial will be in the Dwale Community Cemetery at Dwale, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home.
George McKinney
George McKinney, age 66, of Harold, formerly of South Amherst, Ohio, passed away Tuesday, November 5, 2002, at the home of his son, in South Amherst, following a 15-month illness.
Born November 17, 1935, in Osborne, he moved to Lorain, in 1960. He was a 22-year resident of South Amherst prior to returning to Kentucky in 1993.
He served in the US Army from 1954 to 1962, when he received the National Defense Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Army Occupation Medal, and the Marksmanship Medal. He was employed at the Lorain Plant, of Ford Motor Co., for 30 years, retiring in 1993, from the painting department. While living in Lorain County, he was a member of Washington Street Church of Christ. He was a member of Uppertoles Church of Christ in Kentucky.
Survivors include his wife of forty-four years, Evelyn McKinney (nee Adkins); his sons, George and Gregory McKinney, both of South Amherst; two brothers, Willard Moore, of Amherst, and Dean McKinney, of Port Clinton; one sister, Gay Leboda, of Lorain; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Mary Ellen McKinney (nee: Kidd) and by one sister, Rosemary Williamson.
Funeral services will be held Friday, November 8, (today) at 1 p.m., at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst, Ohio, with the Rev. Steven Cain officiating.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, South Amherst, Ohio.
Arthur “Shorty” Cole
Arthur “Shorty” Cole, 74, of Harold, died Saturday, November 2, 2002, at his residence.
Born in Floyd County, November 22, 1927, he was the son of the late Lilly Poe Cole and Wilson Cole. He was a retired peace officer and a deacon in his church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ella Conn Cole.
Survivors include five daughters, Eula Mae Potter of Roxana, Ella Marie Cole of Pikeville, Delores Jean Bentley of Harold, Patricia Faye Cole of Pikeville, and Cora Loraine Cole of Ivel; one brother, Willis Cole of Ohio; three sisters, Etherine Hamilton of Ohio, Mary Maynard of Michigan, and Maxine Cole of Texas; 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three daughters, Mary Francis Kinney, Joyce Courtney, and Dorothy Loretta Hartsock.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, November 5, at the J.W. Call & Son Funeral Home, Pikeville, with Frankie Bryant officiating.
Burial was in the Cole Cemetery at Betsy Layne.
Visitation was at the funeral home, where services were conducted each evening.
Active pallbearers were his grandsons.
Norma Jean Tackett
Norma Jean Tackett, 76, of Huntington, Indiana, formerly of Melvin, died Wednesday, October 30, at her daughter’s home in Warsaw, Indiana.
Born August 19, 1926, in Dony, she was the daughter of the late Hayes Vance and Laura Osborne Vance. She was retired from Square D, and was a former member of Gospel Community Church, Huntington, Indiana.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Darwin Tackett, on January 7, 1983.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Keith (Freda) Hamilton of Warsaw, Indiana; two sons, Freddie Tackett of Huntington, Indiana and Ted W. Tackett of Warsaw, Indiana; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons and six brothers.
Funeral services were conducted at the Deal-Robbins & Van Gilder Funeral Home, Huntington Chapel, with Rev. Rodney Rudd and Rev. Worlie Newsome officiating.
Burial was in the Pilgrims Rest Cemetery, Huntington, Indiana.
