Jess Lee (Tankersley) Mahan, age 82, of Prestonsburg, passed away Thursday, September 26, 2002, at her home, in Prestonsburg, after an extended illness.
She was born February 26, 1920, at Pennington Gap, Virginia, and was the daughter of the late Clarance Rufus Tankersley and Ella Esta McPherson. She had retired from the Bank Josephine as a bank manager.
She was the wife of the late Marshall C. Mahan.
Survivors include one son, Carl Mahan of Lexington; two daughters, Jere Allen of Leander, Texas, and Mary Lynn Mahan of Prospect.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, September 28, at 2 p.m., at the Burke Funeral Home, with Rev. Dennis Love officiating.
Burial was in the Davidson Memorial Gardens Cemetery at Ivel, under the direction of Burke Funeral Home, Prestonsburg.
Visitation was Friday, September 27, at the funeral home.
Bertha Mary Davis Slone
Bertha Mary Davis Slone, 84, of Prestonsburg, died Wednes-day, September 25, 2002, at Highlands Regional Medical Center.
Born August 26, 1918, in Nolan, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Rand and Laura Crabbtree Davis. She was a domestic worker, and a member of the Highland Avenue Freewill Baptist Church in Prestonsburg.
Survivors include two sons, James Slone of Tram, and Eddie Slone of Prestonsburg; two daughters, Anna Bell Harless of David, and Mary Inez Branham of Prestonsburg; one brother, Floyd Davis of Florida; 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Martin Slone, and two brothers, Jake Davis and Reverend Junior Davis.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, September 28, at 1 p.m., at Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, with Clifford Austin officiating.
Burial was in the Gethsemane Gardens, Prestonsburg, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home.
Visitation was at the funeral home.
Mertie Blevins Newsome
Mertie Blevins Newsome, 61, of McDowell, died Friday, September 27, at the University of Louisville Hospital.
Born March 7, 1941, in Floyd County, she was the daughter of the late Emit and Nova Lambert Blevins.
She is survived by her husband, Anthony Newsome.
Other survivors include two sons, James Anthony Newsome of Prestonsburg, and Glenn Dale Newsome of McDowell; two daughters, Nora McNear (John) of Louisville, and Freda Gayle Bentley (Randall) of McDowell; one sister, Opal Newsome of McDowell; and five grandchildren, James Michael, Mark Anthony, Brett, Tommy (T.J.) and Murtie (Cookie) Corene.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, September 30, at 11 a.m., at the Little Rosa Old Regular Baptist Church of the New Salem Association, in McDowell, with Old Regular Baptist ministers officiating.
Burial was in the Osborne Cemetery (Frasure’s Creek) at McDowell, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin.
Visitation was at the church.

Bill Douglas “Doug” Shepherd
Bill Douglas “Doug” Shepherd, 53, of Martin, died Monday, September 23, 2002, at Highlands Regional Medical Center.
Born January 9, 1949, in Martin, he was the son of the late Bill and Phyllis Ousley Shepherd. He was a disabled diesel mechanic for National Mines.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include two sisters, Tammy Morrison of Prestons-burg; and Mary Smith of Martin; three nephews, Christopher Smith, Stephen Morrison; and David Morrison; and one niece, Andrea Smith.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday, September 26, at 1 p.m., at Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, with Gordon Fitch officiating.
Burial was in the Davidson Memorial Gardens, Ivel, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home.
Visitation was at the funeral home.
Cora Collins
Cora Collins, 81, of Melvin, died Tuesday, September 24, at the McDowell Appalachian Regional Hospital.
Born March 24, 1921, in Knott County, she was the daughter of the late Ellis and Maudie Profitt Hall. She was a homemaker and a member of the Wheelwright Freewill Baptist Church
She is survived by her husband, Addison Bee Collins.
Survivors include three sons, Kennith Adrian Collins of Belleview, Ohio, Charles Edward Collins of Melvin, and Ellis Ray Collins of Taylor, Michigan; four daughters, Barbara Sue Green of Melvin, Marcella Williams of Bypro, Marlene Johnson of McDowell, and Sharon Kay Forman of Bevinsville; three brothers, Gay Hall of Knott County, Vermon Hall of Bevinsville, and Moses Hall of Morehead; one sister, Margie Hall Williams of Pikeville; 21 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Charloett Newman; five brothers, Lonis Hall, Elmer Hall, Carmel Hall, Ishmael Hall and Waylace Hall; two sisters, Carnie Smock and Gallie Slone; and one grandchild, Shawna Johnson.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday, September 26, at noon, at the Wheelwright Freewill Baptist Church, with Louis Ferrari, John Allen and Tommy Webb officiating.
Burial was in the Buckingham Cemetery at Bevinsville, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin.

Bill T. Turner
Bill T. Turner, age 61, of Gratis Township, Ohio, in Preble County, passed away Wednesday, September 25, 2002, at 3 p.m., at his residence, following a brief battle with cancer.
He was born April 18, 1941, in Wayland, the son of Pauline Turner of Wayland, and the late Freddie Turner, and had lived in Ohio since 1964. He served in the U.S. Air Force. He was a roller in the Hot Strip Mill at A K Steel, retiring in 2001, after 36 years of service. He was a member of the Monroe First Church of God, and Loyal Order of The Moose #501 of Middletown.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by an uncle, Charles “Bubby” Turner.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 37 years, Kathryn “Kitty” Turner; two daughters, Amy Froment, and husband, John Froment of West Alexandria, Ohio; Allison Campbell, and husband, Pastor Greg Campbell of Middletown, Ohio; six grandchildren, Clayton, Emily, Leslie, Luke, Lily and Turner; special aunt, Lottie “Sissy” Turner of Wayland; and several other aunts and uncles.
Funeral services will be Saturday, September 28, at 2 p.m., at the Monroe First Church of God, with Pastor Terry Ball officiating.
Interment will be at Fairmound Cemetery, East Elkton, Ohio.

French W. Boyd
French W. Boyd, a native of Floyd County, died on Wednesday, September 25, 2002.
He was the son of the late Orville and Lillymae Boyd.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, and his two daughters, Theresa and Lori.
