Irene (Basiey) Samons, 69, of Martin, died Thursday, May 22, 2003, at the Prestonsburg Health Care Center.
Born January 12, 1934, in Floyd County, she was the daughter of the late William and Gertrude Gillespie Samons. She was a retired waitress and a member of the Church of Christ, (Arkansas Creek), Martin.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Jackie Dalton and Debby Samons of Hippo, and Michael Keith and Kathy Samons, of Harold; brothers, J.R. Samons and Earl Samons, both of Martin; sister, Dorothy Samons of Martin; grandchildren, Dalton Keith Samons, Amanda Ann Samons and Noah Keith Samons; and a great-grandchild, Trey Miles Samons.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Frank Samons, Fred Samons, Aspy (Squire) Samons, and Link Salmons.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, May 25, at 2 p.m., at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, in Martin, with Ronnie Samons and others officiating.
Burial will be in the Samons & Family Cemetery at Hippo under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin.
Frank Coburn
Frank Coburn, 88, of Garrett, died Tuesday, May 20, 2003, at the Prestonsburg Health Care, Prestonsburg.
Born December 14, 1914, in Floyd County, he was the son of the late Woots and Rosy Howard Coburn. He was a disabled coal miner, a member of the U.M.W.A., a 50-year member of James W. Alley Masonic Lodge No. 869 at Wayland, a Shriner, and a member of the Rock Fork United Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Hayes Coburn.
Survivors include one daughter, Bulah Ann Layne of Belleville, Michigan; three sisters, Myrtle Chaffins of Prestonsburg, and Margaret Conley and Polly Howard, both of Garrett; three grandchildren, Lloyd Layne, Wanda Ostrowski, and Pamela Hansen; seven great-grandchildren, Jennifer Pelton, Michael Ostrowski, Sarah Ostrowski, Tommy Layne, Tyler Layne, Kasey Hansen, and Hannah Hansen.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Harry Randall Coburn; and one sister, May Shepherd.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, May 23, at 11 a.m., at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, with Rev. Clifford Austin officiating.
Burial will be in the Coburn Cemetery, Rock Fork, Garrett, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home.
Visitation is at the funeral home.
Roger Reed Sr.
Roger Reed Sr., 89, of Hueysville, died Monday, May 19, 2003, at the Hazard Appalachian Regional Hospital.
Born June 8, 1914, in Floyd County, he was the son of the late Gold and Sarah Patton Reed. He was a disabled coal miner and a veteran of the U.S. Army and World War II.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Olvie Vanderpool Reed.
Survivors include three sons, Roger Reed Jr. of Hueysville, Jerry Reed of Lexington, and Gary E. Reed of Eastern; a daughter, Priscilla Tussey of Hueysville; two brothers, Kelly Reed of Mousie, and John Reed of Hueysville; two sisters, Virgie Vanderpool of Garrett, and Myrtle Vanderpool of Greenwich, Ohio; 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Shannon Reed; two daughters, Pamra Reed and Janice Reed; five brothers, Norman Reed, Gold (Chuck) Reed Jr., Jessie Reed, A.J. Reed, and Claude Reed; three sisters, Clarice Pickett, Gail Dedmon, and Sadie Chadwick; and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday, May 22, at 11 a.m., at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home in Martin, with Rev. Ondie Wireman and Bill Tussey Jr. officiating.
Burial was in the Reed Family Cemetery at Salyers Branch in Hueysville.
Vistation was at the funeral home.
David “Midget Man” Shepherd
David “Midget Man” Shepherd, 37, of Hueysville, died Tuesday, May 20, 2003, at his residence.
Born May 22, 1965, in Kendallville, Indiana, he was the son of Faye Shepherd of Hueysville and the late Ishmael Shepherd. He was a disabled blaster for Mountain Valley Explosives.
He is survived by his wife, Judy Owsley Shepherd.
Other survivors include two sons, Devin Lee Shepherd and Joshua Lewis Shepherd, both of Hueysville; a step-son, Jonathan Edward Barnett of Hueysville; Goober (a beloved dog); and five brothers, Owen Shepherd, Bryon Shepherd, Roger Dale Shepherd, and Jeffery Shepherd, all of Hueysville, and Eric Ron Shepherd of Wayland; three sisters, Priscilla Sparkman and Sherry Lewis, both of Hueysville, and Phyllis Shepherd of Grand Rapids, Michigan; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ishmael Ray Shepherd.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, May 23, at 11 a.m., at the Salt Lick Community Baptist Church, at Hueysville, with Bethel Bolen, Carlos Beverly, Cullen Caudill (Prayer), and Lloyd Shepherd officiating.
Burial will be in the Shepherd Family Cemetery at Hueysville, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin.

Maggie Dye
Maggie Dye, 52, of Sandy Hook, died Monday, May 19, 2003, at the Elliott County Medical Clinic, at Sandy Hook.
Born November 23, 1950, in Grethel, she was the daughter of the late John Henry and Sentha Parson Parker. She was a disabled CNA.
She is survived by her husband, Phinas Dye.
Other survivors include two sons, Phinas Dye Jr., and Cliff Dye, both of McDowell; four daughters, Cynthia Gayheart of McDowell, Gina Lisa Johnson of Melvin, Magarita Bowman of Sandy Hook, and Darlena Johnson of Mayking; three brothers, Orville Parker of Wyandotte, Michigan, George (Dave) Parker of Lincoln Park, Michigan and William (Bill) Parker of McDowell; and 21 grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Mickey Parker; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, May 22, at 1 p.m., at the Little Rosa Regular Baptist Church at McDowell, with ministers of the Baptist Church officiating.
Burial will be in the Dye Cemetery (Spewing Camp) at Orkney, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin.

William H. “Bill” Scutchfield
William H. “Bill” Scutchfield, age 69, of Prestonsburg, husband of Vivian Thacker Scutchfield, passed away, Wednesday, May 14, 2003, at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Huntington, W. Va.
He was born January 5, 1934, in Water Gap, the son of the late Darvin Scutchfield and Rebecca Haywood Scutchfield. He was a retired welder, electrician, and diesel mechanic, and an U.S. Army veteran.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include one daughter, Debbie Scutchfield of Prestonsburg; one brother, Darvin Scutchfield Jr., of South Bend, Indiana; two sisters, Josephine Herald and Julia Tussey, both of Prestonsburg.
Funeral services for William H. “Bill” Scutchfield were conducted Saturday, May 17, at 1 p.m., in the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, with Clergyman Steve Pescosolido officiating.
Burial was in the Scutchfield Cemetery, Prestonsburg.
Visitation was at the funeral home.
Pallbearers: Kenny Bentley, Rudy Thacker, Darwin Scutchfield, Larry Herald, Morris Osborne, Bill Haywood, and Gordon McKee.
Arvle Spears
Arvle Spears, 77, of Bevinsville, died Saturday, May 17, 2003, at the Highlands Regional Medical Center, Prestonsburg.
Born October 12, 1925, in Boons Camp, he was the son of the late Isaac and Mary Dutton Spears. He was a retired coal miner, and a member of the U.M.W.A. at Wheelwright.
He is survived by his wife, Virble Burke Spears.
Other survivors include two sons, Glenn Berlin Spears of Bevinsville, and Ricky Darrell Spears of Weeksbury; two daughters, Virginia Gibson and Brenda Carol Hall, both of Bevinsville; one brother, Homer Spears of Belfry; two sisters, Irene Mosley of McDowell, and Gerogene Mosley of Garrett, Indiana; eight grandchildren, and one great-grandson.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Wanda Sue Spears; four brothers, Elmer Spears, Isaac Spears Jr., Freddie Spears, and Bobby Gene Spears; and one grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, May 21, at 11 a.m., at the Little Rock Old Regular Baptist Church at Bevinsville, with ministers of the Old Regular Baptist Church officiating.
Burial will be in the Silas Burke Cemetery, at Bevinsville, under direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin.

Beecher Layne Scutchfield
Beecher Layne Scutchfield, age 91, of Martin, passed away Saturday, May 17, 2003.
He was born in Water Gap, on June 8, 1911, the son of the late Frank Scutchfield and Mary Layne Scutchfield.
He graduated from Prestonsburg High School in 1929, and attended Berea College, where he graduated with highest honors in 1933, being chosen for Phi Kappa Phi Honorary. He then taught at Prestonsburg High School, before attending the University of Kentucky, where he received a Masters Degree. He then moved to Wheelwright, where he worked for Inland Steel Corporation as a medical and radiology technician.
He married
Ann Osborne, of Martin, in 1941.
In 1944, he followed in the footsteps of his father, Frank Scutchfield, becoming a licensed veterinarian. He moved his family to Hazard in 1947, where he worked at the Hazard Clinic, and practiced veterinary medicine at his home.
In 1957, he moved again, to become head of the UMW Hospital laboratory in McDowell. In 1965, he took the position of laboratory director of biological sciences at the University of Kentucky Depart-ment of bacteriology and animal research. In 1970, he assumed the position of head of biology at Ashland Community College.
In 1972, he retired to Martin, and practiced veterinarian medicine, until his complete retirement in 1988.
He attended the First Methodist Church, Prestonsburg.
He is survived by two sons, Dr. Frank Douglas Scutchfield of Lexington, and Dr. Scott Beecher Scutchfield of Danville; three grandchildren, Alex Layne Scutchfield of Lexington, Samuel Appleton Scutchfield of Danville, and Elizabeth Layne Scutchfield of Danville; two great-grandchildren, Cassandra Ann Scutchfield, and Ethan Layne Scutchfield, both of Lexington; and one sister, Evelyn.
His interests included photography, public health, and eradication of rabies. He vaccinated thousands of animals in clinics held across most of eastern Kentucky. In his later years he took great pride in the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren.
He joined his beloved wife, Ann, who died in 1983, in the peace of paradise.
Visitation was Monday, May 19, at 5 p.m., in the Hall Funeral Home, Martin, with the funeral, Tuesday, May 20, at 11 a.m., at the funeral home.
