Claude E. Hayes
1927-2016
Aged 88 of Springfield, Ohio passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday May 1, 2016, at Heartland of Springfield where he was a popular resident for almost two years. Claude was a Christmas baby, born December 25, 1927, in Johnson County, Kentucky the son of Gus and Jessie Hayes. He had 14 siblings and was especially close to his brothers Gus Hayes, Jr. and South G. Hayes. At the insistence of his father, Claude began his working life early and did the work of two men, for himself and his brother South G., who was in fragile health throughout his life. Unfortunately, his brother passed away in 1961. It was a loss Dad grieved for the rest of his life. He was also preceded in death by nine of his beloved siblings.
In 1952, Claude married
Billie Ruth Hensley Hayes after a whirlwind two week courtship. Claude and Billie had five children, each one has special memories of their father: James remembers fondly Dad’s attendance at his many sporting events; Tom (Laurel) recalls Dad’s encouraging his strong work ethic when he chose to work not one but two jobs in high school; Claudia Kuykendall (Terry) was Dad’s very own “Number 1 Girl, ” a title she still proudly holds today; South Gene holds dear many memories of helping Dad and Mom rehabilitate homes to sell; Amanda Chakeres (Philip) will never forget Dad’s beautiful singing voice. Claude also had seven grandchildren with their own special memories of their truly unforgettable and knowledgeable Pappaw: Andrew (Susie) Hayes; Jacqueline (Nick) Gilmore; Renee (Austin) Hart; Bradley Roberts; Erika Hayes Buzzard; Leesa (Joey) McGough; and Joshua Hayes. He also leaves 13 great grandchildren who will no doubt be delighted to hear all about his escapades. Dad always had a way with a story, a love for his family, and an endless trove of knowledge happily shared. We also cannot forget friend and extended family member Tony Pugliese who often opened his home and his kitchen to Dad during his many trips to California to visit his son South.
Claude supported his family working as a foreman in the construction industry with The Fishel Company, and, later, American General, where he became an explosives expert. However, there is no doubt that his favorite occupations were “Dad” and “Pappaw.”
Always family first, Claude and his wife Billie worked as a team for many years to bring to Ohio those in need of jobs and lodging so that they, too, might enjoy a better life and provide better educations for their children. It was a cause they believed in and both were proud to extend a helping hand to many from their home state of Kentucky.
Sadly preceded in death by his unforgettable wife Billie Ruth Hensley Hayes in 2002, his children and his grandchildren ensure that his memory will remain and his humor will be shared throughout generations. Dad, you too, are unforgettable.
Memorial service to remain private as requested by our father, an unpretentious man who desired neither picnic nor parade in life or death.
