Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 6, 11:30 a.m. at the Immanuel Baptist Church for Roxie Bowling, 58, of Pikeville, who passed away Thursday, Jan 1 at Pikeville Medical Center.
Mr. Bowling was born April 5, 1956 in Pikeville, son of the late Robert Drexel and Jettie Roe Bowling. He was owner of East Ky. Exterminating & Lawn Care.
Surviving are two sons, Rodney Stevens of Seymour, Tenn., and Braxton Wayne Bowling of Pikeville; three daughters, Lisa Stevens, Shayla Stevens, and Jenna Stevens, all of Pikeville; two brothers, Ernie Bowling of Monroe, Mich., Benjamin Bowling of Knights, Ind.; three sisters, Anna Jean Burke-Triplett of Somerset, Darcus Faine of Frankfort, and Hester B. Johnson of Weeksbury; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and special friend, Linda Stevens.
The service was officiated by Michael Sanders, with burial in the Gethsemane Gardens in Prestonsburg.

Tommy Ray Castle Sr.
1947-2014
Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 2, 1 p.m. at the Boons Camp Free Will Baptist Church for Tommy Ray Castle Sr., 67, of Louisa, who passed away Monday, Dec. 29.
Mr. Castle was born June 22, 1947 at Offutt, son of the late Andy Melvin and Mary Ann Laney Castle. He was a crane operator.
Surviving are his wife, Nancy B. Cavins Castle; two sons, Tommy Castle Jr. and Danny L. Castle, both of Williamsport; three step-sons, Francis Ray Caudy, Terry Eugene Caudy, and Paul Clyde Caudy, all of Circleville, Ohio; two daughters, Sandie Castle Nelson of Louisa, and Deeanna Castle Blevins of Offutt; tow brothers, Lon Castle of Bellefontaine, Ohio, and Roger Castle of Wynn, Ariz.; two sisters, Leona Torgerson of Westley Chapel, Fla., and Brenda Williams of Tampa, Fla.; 12 grandchilddren, seven step-grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren.
Burial was in the Laney cemetery at Offutt.

Pauline Bowling
1945-2014
Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 29, 12 p.m. at the Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel for Pauline Bowling, 69, of Paintsville, who passed away Saturday, Dec. 27 at Mountain Manor of Paintsville.
Mrs. Bowling was born July 12, 1945 in Floyd County, daughter of the late Edgar and Josephine Dixon Bowling. She was a homemaker. She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Anita Meade.
Surviving are one son, David Bowling of West Van Lear; one daughter, Betty Wells of Ohio; three brothers, Tommy Bowling of Pikeville, Billy Bowling of Van Lear, and Cecil Bowling of Hillsboro, Ohio; four sisters, Juanita King of New Vienna, Ohio, Loraine Ratliff of Salyersville, Carolyn Goble of Auxier, and Dixie Wells of East Point; and three grandchildren.
The service was officiated by Roger Hill, with burial in the Highland Memorial Park cemetery in Staffordsville.

Carl Douglas Price
1934-2014
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec. 24, 11 a.m. at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel for Carl Douglas Price, 80, of Harold, who passed away Monday, Dec. 22 at the Greg & Noreen Wells Hospice Center of Hazard.
Mr. Price was born July 26, 1934 in Johnson County, son of the late Hubert and Ruby Price. He was a retired welder and a Korean War Army Veteran.
He was preceeded in death by one brother, Hubert Price Jr., and four sisters, Louise Rowlin, Virgie Ward, Evelyn Booth, and Melvina Baldridge.
He is survived by his wife, Marcella Spurlock Price one son Dwayne (Nancy) Price, of Staffordsville; two step-sons Kenneth (Jeannie) Case, of Dana, Jeff (Michelle) Case, of Mullins; two daughters Carla (Tom) Cannon; and Lori Castle, both of Mount Sterling; one brother Jack (Betty) Price, of Warsaw, Ind., two sisters, Jenny (Jerry) Wiley, and Claudia Lyons, both of Paintsville; nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Burial was in Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville.

Larry VanHoose
1938-2014
Journalist, KY GOP Leader, Congressional Staffer
Larry VanHoose, long-time Republican political figure, passed away suddenly at his home in Cape Coral, Fla., September 16, 2014. A memorial service is set for Saturday, November 1 at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, 3421 Harrodsburg Road, Lexington, with visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m. with the service to follow at 10:30 a.m. Private burial will take place at the VanHoose family cemetery in Nippa.
Larry was born July 27, 1938 to Leslie and Myrtle (Barnett) VanHoose. He was one of four VanHoose children born and raised in Paintsville. He graduated from Paintsville High School in 1956 where he played many sports, edited the school newspaper, and met his future wife, Martelle (Patrick) VanHoose. Larry covered local sports for the Paintsville Herald, publishing his first front page story in 1954 at age 15 and he continued reporting for the paper while attending the University of Kentucky. At UK, Larry was sports editor of The Kentucky Kernel and his column “Wildcat Corner” appeared in both the Kernel and the Paintsville Herald throughout the late-1950s. He and Martelle were married
in 1959 and Larry began covering high school sports for the Lexington Leader. By the mid-1960s, the family included sons Howard and Todd, and Larry was sports editor at the Leader and served as the local Lexington reporter for Sports Illustrated. Larry was active in Republican politics and served the Administration of Gov. Louie B. Nunn from 1968-1972 first as press secretary and speech writer and ultimately in the Nunn Cabinet as Commissioner of Public Information.
Larry and Martelle raised their family in Versailles until moving to Washington, DC in the mid-1980s.
Larry became Executive Director of the Kentucky GOP in 1972. In 1978, Larry helped lead Larry J. Hopkins’ successful campaign to represent Kentucky’s Sixth Congressional District and worked for Hopkins in his Lexington office before leaving Kentucky in 1984 to become Hopkins’ Chief of Staff in the Washington, DC office. He continued in that role until Hopkins retired from Congress in 1993. Larry spent 25 years as a Congressional staffer, serving on the staffs of Ed Whitfield (R-KY), Martin Hoke (R-OH), and J.D. Hayworth (R-AZ) in addition to Hopkins. He retired in 2004.
Larry was preceded in death by his loving wife Martelle, parents Les and Myrtle VanHoose, and brother Marvin VanHoose.
He is survived by his son, Howard VanHoose of Cape Coral, Fla., son and daughter-in-law, Todd and Mary VanHoose; and grandchildren Kendall and Connor VanHoose, all of Alexandria, Va.; sister, Janet VanHoose of Lexington; brother, Harold VanHoose of Hong Kong; sister-in-law Beverly Wynn of Borden, Ind.; and many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins. All will miss him greatly.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the ALS Foundation to further research into that devastating disease.
Colleen Williams
1928-2014
Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 27, 1 p.m. at the Phelps & Son Funeral Home Chapel for Colleen Williams, 86, of Van Lear, who passed away Thursday, Dec. 24 at Highlands Regional Medical Center in Prestonsburg.
Mrs. Williams was born Sept. 4, 1928 in Johnson County, daughter of the late Rufus Williams and Verla Spriggs Williams. She was also preceded in death by one son, Jerry Lynn Williams.
Surviving are one son, Ricky Williams of Prestonsburg; one brother, Roger Williams of West Van Lear; one sister, Karen Gay Parsley of West Van Lear; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
The service was officiated by Jerry Scott and Roger D. Williams, with burial in the Highland Memorial Park cemetery at Staffordsville.

Ida Blackburn Goble
1941-2014
Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 29, 11 a.m. at the Phelps & Son Funeral Home Chapel for Ida Blackburn Goble, 72, of Flat Gap, who passed away Thursday, Dec. 25 at Mountain Manor of Paintsville.
Mrs. Goble was born Sept. 5, 1941 in Martin County, daughter of the late Burgess and Josephine Cline Blackburn. She was also preceded in death by four brothers, Ernest Blackburn, Burgess Blackburn Jr., Glenn Blackburn, and Billy Joe Blackburn; one sister, Monetta Blackburn. She was a member of the Church of Christ.
Surviving are her husband, Bossier Goble; one son, Linzie Burgess (Michelle) Goble of Staffordsville; one daughter, Martha Jean (Darrell) Blair of Staffordsville; four brothers, Rush Buddy “Earl” Blackburn and Russell Blackburn, both of Debord, John Eddie Blackburn of Louisa, and Donald Lee Blackburn of Inez, ; two sisters, Phyllis Preece of Louisa and Allie Faye “Betty” Blackburn of South Williamson; and four grandchildren.
The service was officiated by B. Joe Hill, with burial in the Goble Family cemetery at Flat Gap.

John Tandy Martin
1933-2014
John Tandy Martin, 81, of Huntsville, Texas, passed away Sunday, Dec. 21 in Huntsville.
Mr. Martin was born in Kentucky, Oct. 4, 1933, the son of the late Duke and Stella Hounshell Martin. He was a U. S. Air Force veteran.
Surviving are his wife, Stephanie Martin of Huntsville; one daughter, Toby Anna (Dwight) Stambaugh; one son, John Tandy Martin Jr.; one grandson, and one granddaughter.
